First and formost Eritrea is a sovereign nation-state/country. And Eritrawinet is an expression of citizenship for which the people had fought for thrity years. As to me this is sacred and cannot be sacrified on the altar. I also understan that Eritrea has nine nationalities and, hence it is a multi-national state just as all othe African countries. Still more, Eritrea is multi-lingual multi- religious country and some may like to call this identity. What is paramount, however, Eritrawinet is what brings the people together, regardless of difference in linguistic, relegious and regional affiliation. Moreover, it is important to understand that under any form of government Eritrea will always remain to be a nation state and Eritrawinet an expression of citizenship. After all France existed as a nation state and French remained as an expression of citizenship before and after the French revolution(1972). Chile had been a nation state and chileansim an expression of citizenship before and after the bloody coup of Augusto Pinochet (1973). One would provided thousands of example from Africa, Asia, Latin America and even from Europe. Sam, what worries me the most is that all our elites in general and our politicians in particular, both in the country and those in diaspora, are getting old. With regards to Eritrea, the political experience of the nine ethnic communities enabled them to form the Eritrean community and in effect a strong Eritrean identity which is a mindset entity more than the so called biological or linguistic identity. In effect it enabled Eritrea to win its independence and ensure its sovereignity; more unique in many ways. With regards to governance it is underpinned by context. Eritrea faced serious external threats forcing it to focus on retaining its sovereignity. It is a question of priority, resilence to protect the state.
Nationality is related to a person's place of birth or ancestry, while citizenship is a legal title given by a state government after a person meets legal requirements.
