    More information on housing your button quail: (not my writing)
    Many people keep button quails in the bottom of their aviary, for variety as well as to help clean up spilled seed. This is fine, as long as the other birds' droppings are cleaned out often and the quails are not overcrowded. Because their feet are not made for perching, but rather for walking, their floor must not be wire, instead use cedar or pine shavings. Newspaper is not a good idea, as the droppings will just lay on the surface and your quails will be left walking around in you know what! Traditional bird cages are an option, as long as the floor space is sufficient (minimum of four square feet for one or two) and the inner top of the cage is padded to protect against the "Boink Factor" (see below). This can be done quite easily by wiring an inexpensive piece of foam, 1" or thicker, to the inner top of the cage.
    Food and water must be accessible to the quail on the floor of their home. Make sure the food dish is not something their little toes will get caught in! The best thing I have found for a waterer is a hanging dispenser that only allows a bit of water to come out at a time, with a larger amount in the reservoir. This keeps the water fresh and clean, whereas a bowl of water would quickly become dirty as the quail would be walking through it all the time and tracking stuff into it.
    Left: A couple of Button Quail homes with "Boink-Proof-Roofs". The one in the back is made from an old coffee table, turned upside down, with fiberglass window screening staple-gunned inside the legs of the table.
    If you want to keep button quails simply because they are so cool, and not for an aviary, keep in mind that they are not like other birds in that they are ground dwellers and cannot perch. This means that floor space is key but vertical space is not (except for the "boink" factor, which I will talk about later). If they are to be housed by themselves or in pairs, a large glass fishtank, 4' long by 1' wide, is ideal. Usually these are 55 gal. capacity, but you can have your pet store order one that is not as deep (and less expensive!) that is known as a "30 gal. long".
    Button quails can be very shy, and are easily startled. They are much happier if they have places to hide, so you should add some "extra options" to their cage or aquarium. Baby Spaz has three such hiding places: a bundle of millet sprays tied by the stems and suspended from the side of the tank, an upside-down rectangular box with two doors cut in it (shoebox size), and a cardboard cylinder about 3" diameter by 6" long, with (get this) a silk shoulder pad cut out of a blouse in it to sleep on. (Okay, so he's spoiled!). Real plants are wonderful, but they must be of a sort that are not toxic to birds. Plastic or silk plants also make nice hiding places, and are much easier to maintain.
    THE BOINK FACTOR
    This is very important, so read carefully! When startled, a button quail's first instinct is to fly straight up to get the heck out of there. They're not going to remember if their roof is something hard until it's too late. Boinking into something unyielding can cause serious injury, permanent disability, health problems later in life, and yes, even death. The answer? BOINK-PROOF THE ROOF! It's easy to do, and will save your quail (and you) a lot of headaches later on.

    That cry is heart breaking. My male quail died and the entire day the female was crying for the male.
    I've used straw pellets, whole and crushed, for substrate in the terrarium, with dry grass and fine sand and crushed shell for bathing.

    We are considering button quail. I was worried a tank wouldn't have enough ventilation. I know a few rats & hamsters that have gotten respiratory infections living in tanks, even though it is the norm. I was looking at more of a wire/screen on the outside cage but would much prefer a tank if they will be healthy in one. Love how cute your tank looks!

    • @milkcookies894
      @milkcookies894 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @chickensquailandbirds5650
      @chickensquailandbirds5650 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea I wouldn't recommend a tank for them. Quail poop alot and there is a lot of ammonia in their poop so they can get sick if they breathe in too much and also they cant really see glass so they can get stressed. I would recommend a large guinea pig cage for these guys or you could build your own cage. Just make sure the cage is big enough and doesn't have a wire floor because wire floors can really damage and hurt their feet.

    • @BrighterDaysAviary
      @BrighterDaysAviary  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think a pair would be good, I had one female and one male living together and they did wonderfully together. You do have to be aware of male button quails being overly aggressive because they would constantly pick and maybe even fight the female. You can have two female and a male but you just need to make sure they are not overly aggressive. Some Button Quails are very aggressive while others are very calm and get along well with other quails. You just need to pick out some nice quails out of the group and stay away from the aggressive ones.

    • @milkcookies894
      @milkcookies894 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that just a male and female or 2 females are good, sometimes you cant keep males with anybody though because they are aggressive, so you should not keep 2 males. But I think 2 females and a male is safer.

Stack them up make a way for them to go to both tanks. One to play one to sleep and lay eggs. Good luck quail like real plants.

      Brighter Days Aviary it’s good you love & take care of them but the set up is very unnatural. I have 4 bobwhite quail. The male is now 7 yrs old. I have them in a parrot cage with 4 zig zag levels of tree limbs & bark they can walk up. They have 2 hideaways on the bottom. One with grit & fine sand & the other a wicker trash can made into a nest box for their eggs. They have all around air flow though I did have to add hardwire cloth & screening on one side to keep debris in. They have a view of the sun rising & are bathed in light from the setting sun too. I have a mixture of bedding that includes dirt from when I tried to bring in grass sod & pine shavings. Now I just clip dandelions & grass into bits & give them different fruit treats like berries, peaches & pears in natural juice, watermelon, cantaloupe & they love lettuces, especially the butter lettuce with the root balls from the grocery, gamebird ration mixed with wild bird seed & different seeds. I also collect prairie grass seeds here in KS in the fall to give to them over the winter. They also like dried crickets, mealworms & things but they smell kind of stinky (esp the crickets). I just think the more natural you can make it the better. I had a friend who had a bobwhite quail that lived to be 9 & I’ve heard they can live to 10 with good care indoors. In the wild due to winter freezes, hunters & predators I’ve heard they only live 6 mos-2 yrs. Don’t they make the cutest variety of sounds? One time I tripped & took a long nose dive in front of the quail. My male was so upset lol! He made a sound like a squeaky toy over & over until I told him I was ok. He’s a sweetheart, talking to me every time I walk by. I like how they adjust the volume & talk very quietly if you’re close by or it’s at night. They’re wonderful little birds.
