What’s up man. I recently just joined the AF Reserve but have been a firefighter in SC for about 4 years now. I currently have NREMT, IFSAC Firefighter 1&2 but my Hazmat Awareness and Ops aren’t IFSAC. Once I get to my reserve unit do you think I will have to go through the DOD Academy or do you think I can challenge my Hazmat certs at my reserve unit. My recruiter said being that I have a few IFSAC certs that there is a possibility I won’t have to attend the full academy. I’m prior serve as well so my recruiter said I won’t have to attend BMT and can report straight to my base for drill next month. Any clarification regarding the process for getting certified will greatly be appreciated. Thanks and best of luck with your career.

Hey brother.... Bring your certs...hard copies with you when you report for training at Goodfellow. I would give you some contact information here but it's public. You should be able to skip quite a few blocks.

After years on TH-cam my first big comment....Some of the guys commenting on Air Force fire and emergency services probably never served in the military at all. Being a military firefighter is a different skill set, aside from all the basics, than being a civilian firefighter in a local community somewhere. I would agree that depending on what base you serve in how
many deployments you go on etcetera that affects your experience level.... Just like anywhere. Air Force fire prevention is tasked with making sure that the base is fire safe and that there are no fires..... as much as possible. Prevention is the first priority unlike civilian departments who, like where I live, seem to be doing the bare minimum.
Usually people who want to crap on military firefighters had a hard time in the military if they did serve or they flunked out of tech school and somehow made it in the civilian world and they want to call military firefighters a joke. Bases I've served on ...we had automatic aid with the local communities in California and they were happy to have us I rescued many people out of vehicles I've done high and low angle rescues wildland firefighting.... You name it. Not every base gets to get that kind of experience nor do they have that kind of relationship with the local community.
The military needs firefighters to go down range to deploy on teams to protect our personnel and our equipment. Stateside they protect aircraft and structures and equipment....and do it in chemical warfare gear under your turnouts after an attack on base.
And as far as experience I would put a career military firefighters experience up against most. I've been to quite a few calls where the supposed expert civilian firefighters didn't know what they were doing or they were extremely unsafe. A lot of civilian departments are good old boy clubs that want to sit around and complain about what they have or don't have and complain when they have to train and complain about bs.
Air Force fire protection has gone through a lot of changes over the years for the better. Is it perfect? No.... My opinion.... they made tech school easier in some ways and harder in others. Some of the services allow their students to graduate and then assign them instructor duty (at least they used to).... I agree at that point that they have no real experience. That's bs. Some of the instructors were firefighters before they came in to the military.
Bottom line don't talk about it unless you've been there...
Take some of what people comment on on TH-cam concerning military firefighting with a grain of salt. Some people get in - like it - and stay in and love it. Others hate it right away and can't wait to get out.... everybody's different. Whether you don't think they have experience or not you've got all these certs ... you can join a civilian department when you get out.... And the funny thing is the Bible of firefighting ....IFSTA Essentials.... has a lot of pictures of military firefighters in it and some of the curriculum developers are military/GS civilians from the DoD Fire Academy (look in the front of the book). Firefighting is supposed to be a brotherhood just like the military..... Some of the guys making disparaging comments are more interested in putting a firefighter sticker on their car and growing a big mustache so they can be cool... And I venture some aren't even firefighters - they're just trolls.
Integrity first, service before self, excellence in all we do
Desire to serve, ability to perform, the courage to act
Train as if someones life depends on it because it does.
Let these mottos guide your journey instead of trying to find shortcomings in or disparaging others "brother". What is your motto? .how do you try to live your life? How do you approach your job?

@NJFireBuff Crazy Ha! I would think the instructors would have a background in Fire. Anyone can read a book and then teach what they just read. I heard that before about the academy.

These guys haven't seen any fire. Its a liability responding to a mutual aid. The City doesn't want them on their fire scene. Heck No
