This is so great. I have a degree in nutrition and we learned about "best by" and "sell by" dates, you are totally right many items can be consumed even once they've "expired". what a great way to reduce food waste and get a deal!!

My family is Mennonite, and own a large bulk food store in East Tennessee, close to Johnson City. I now live in SC with my husband and kiddos, and I really, really miss having easy access to all that good bulk stuff 😢 it’s such a blessing to find those types of stores! We are big fans of our bulk foods and real butter, cheese, meats, etc.

I adore your videos! Your lifestyle is very different to mine, I’m a girl from the industrial North West of the UK, my Dad was a coal miner, Mum always worked too, though I remember she really had to fight my Dad for it. He was paranoid that people would think he couldn’t look after his own family! That’s what the working men were like 50-60 years ago. Dad wasn’t an authoritarian, usually, he was the most kind & loving man, but proud. I’m fascinated though, with the ease & grace with which you run your huge family, the garden, grinding your own grains & still having time to search out things to make your home beautiful. It looks idyllic to me. You helped me perfect my sourdough bread & I’m now famous in my family & friends for my chocolate cake made with starter discard, pancakes are food of the Gods to my Great nieces & nephews, so thank you, thank you. I’ll continue to enjoy yours & your family’s adventures, I think your kids will be so grateful to you & your husband, teaching them, not just academically, but a whole clean & wholesome way of life & all it has to offer. Be well, be happy. 😊

Just hearing Rod and Staff homeschooling threw me back… my sisters and I only used their grammar books, and we hated them at the time because they were (in our minds) really difficult, but once I started going to actual school in high school I realized how far ahead I was in grammar. Now, I love grammar. I will always credit those books❤️

Great deal on the flour! I wish I had a store like that in my area. Just a tip, you can freeze your flour for a couple of days and ensure it will last longer. Just freeze then remove to store or store in buckets. I prefer your grocery haul to others in that I get to see the great deals you got as opposed to " look at all the expensive stuff I bought that you can't afford" type haul.

I feel extremely lucky that there a family owned honey farm just a few miles away from me. They let you stop by during certain hours of the day and you can tour the hives and buy products. It’s all raw and organic and tastes so delicious! I put a small pinch of the bee pollen in my dogs food each morning to help with seasonal allergies and I love the honeycomb as a special treat for myself.

How lucky are you to live near wonderful food supply places like that! The closest we have to that are Amish butter, etc., at a produce stand and it isn’t affordable at all. (I know, I know, quality versus price, but Aldi’s butter at $1.99/lb is a better deal than $6.99/lb to me) We do have a grocery chain that sells food items at near expiration date and I find great deals there but the selection isn’t consistent. I’m excited to see the wonderful recipes that you make using these ingredients! What a fun day and haul!

I worked in school food service for 22 years. At the end of the year we froze any flour, sugar etc so if you have freezer space you could freeze what you have left of that near expiration date flour and it will extend the date. But I'm with you and would feel comfortable using past the date if I made bread as often as you do.

Butternut Squash soup: Cut up squash and an onion (onion is important) . Coat in olive oil, s&p. Roast. Add veggies and chicken broth to mixer. Blend. Keep it thicker, not too much broth (think porridge). Top w dollop of sour cream, grate of nutmeg. I've even had this thick porridge'y savory soup for breakfast ... it's so good.

If you or a family member has a food saver you could put flour in ball jars( if you have) and buy the round attachment to vacuum seal the flour and that will buy you even more time. Of course if you have room in the freezer you can put it in there as well. Great haul. After the year we had last year I decided we need3d to store up certain things for emergency situations. I have never felt that way before but I have canned ground beef and chicken as well as flour, corn meal, rice and beans. You have to have power to use your freezer so I canned as well as stocked freezers. And trust me I’m nota chicken little but after the last year and a half 🤷‍♀️

I love our Amish store. It's almost an hour away for us too but I like to go at least twice a month. We love chicken thighs and they have still had it for .50/lb so I stock up when I can. I got a 25lb box of their home grown tomatoes for $9.95 and last week I got some breakfast sausage rolls in 1lb packages - a case for $7.49. Couldn't pass that up. I put it in freezer for now but I will be canning it up. There have been several times where they would have a 40 lb box of bananas for $5!! Since I make smoothies a lot, I get them and freeze them, and of course give some away.

So interesting to see. We have no equivalent that I’m aware of here in the U.K. but fun to learn about!

I know, I'm UK too and I'm jealous! We obviously have farm shops but they are much more expensive than supermarkets rather than cheaper.

We have many such stores in our area which borders PA Dutch Country. Some things are outdated but still perfectly good. There are only two of us now, but it’s still fun to shop there.

It’s so funny you just posted this video; I was thinking about asking if you knew any communities like this around St. Louis. My family lives near Arthur IL but it’s a couple hours away so I was looking for somewhere closer.

If you have some room, you can freeze the flour to keep bugs out or a food grade bucket with oxygen packs.

I used to live in a state where the Amish would come into the fresh market every weekend. I loved their cakes. My son loved the oatmeal cake more than anything else. They had so many things to choose from. I wish we had a place like that where I live now.
