Ikenna can you give us some tips on how to ig I guess block out a language and focus one at a time or the ones you use the most.Because I’m learning Italian so I can speak to my mother’s side of the family I already speak one romantic language Romanian, I been so use to watching French movies TH-camrs like bilal Hassani and sulivan gwed and Sunday Jules, mademoiselle Gloria, spark dise, alix gavoille, and more that I can sing ROI by bilal Hassani but can’t remember the word for bathroom in Italian, it like I need to be cleared of French and turn my room and brain into little Italy

I just bought the book today... I’m halfway through it. This has been something I needed. I need to refine my Spanish. After that I will choose another language. Unlike you though, I’ve known early that languages could be a thing for me. I was surrounded by Spanish speakers at a young age; I was raised in central Florida. So, thank you for this!

I personally think that people should deconstruct a language by using their own language and finding all the equivalents and then learning how to use your study language as if it were your own. For example, find out all the pronouns, all adjectives, then find the 20 most common verbs, top 100 every day objects and places, and get basic sentence structure/grammar rules in the study language and make flash cards and study them. Then after hearing music or video's in your study language you will start learning from them 10X faster because you actually KNOW what words are being spoken in the tv and music. I don't believe in learning a language RAW (as in learning it like a baby does). NO matter how much NOISE you hear in the study language, if you don't know what they are saying, you are making very slow progress at best to learn the language. That's why it takes babies 4-5 years to talk despite full immersion in the language 24/7. Turning NOISE into Knowledge is not as effective as building a language blueprint and filling it in like a puzzle.

She's working as a translator/interpreter today without ever having seen a language school from the inside and judges always ask for her when they need someone for the serbian language, even though there's quite a few others.

@@avzarathustra6164 It has a few similiarities with other slavic languages. Other than that? No idea, never took a deep dive into the language, which i definitely regret. If you have no problems pronouncing 3 consonants in a row (Krk for example, an island in croatia) then you wont have a hard time with speaking. Theres also 3 or 4 kinds of 's' sounds which can be hard to grasp, but grammar is actually pretty hard according to my mom. Grammar is something i never understood tho, neither german or english. so again: no idea bout that :x
If you wanna know some specific stuff i can try to ask my mom about it, may be a good opportunity to get better at the language myself xD

Some study of grammar and stuff like that would be probably good to top it of but I don’t like textbooks. Right now I would like to Learn Japanese and I will probably try it in similar way. First I would like to learn hiragana and katakana so I can read subtitles and then watch some good shows with Japanese subs + I got Pimsleurs Japanese so I can have some basics before I start watching. Watch a movie you're very familiar with, in the dub of the language you want to learn, with english subtitles. Like, I know the whole script to The Fast and The Furious off by heart, so what if I watch it in another language? Because I know what's going on and what they should be saying in English, but instead comparing it with the other language. So you're learning like "Ok, so this phrase is said like this in this language", etc.
    Genius.

My personal method of learning French with video media is mostly through short youtube videos. The process is not necessarily the same as what Ikenna mentioned about Tv series as they are generally longer and contain multiple episodes or seasons. Since the youtube videos I watch are shorter, I can watch them multiple times.
When I started out as a beginner, I watch the video repeatedly with my native languages (I'm bilingual, so either work). The important part is to be interested in the content to the point where you subconsciously start to mumble or mouth certain lines from the video.
Moving forward as an intermediate, I did a similar method of watching the video with French subtitles or no subtitles at all, as Ikenna said in his video. However, again due to the short nature of TH-cam videos, I would watch the video once without subs, once with French subs, then one final time with English subs to make sure I understood everything. I then go back to the French sub to check for any words that I didn't know previously and try to figure out the meaning based on context and my knowledge from the English subs. I find this quite effective for me.
Hope this can serve some help for people who are trying to learn from TH-cam.

So I started serious self studying korean last year and I have sort of discovered these techniques naturally. Though everyone finds different methods more effective than others, I have found that daily immersion in multiple forms and mediums really helpful. Even when I fall off of my formal studying in my books or audio/video lessons..I find my Korean is still improving steadily just by taking in so much Korean content on a daily basis. I am ACTIVELY watching/ listening though but I think even subconsciously hearing the language as often as possible tunes your ear to pick up even more of it more easily.
Thanks so much for the tip on the Viki site! I have been using youtube for most of my content watching (there is a lot of great content to enjoy while studying) but this site will help A LOT!

    SUMMARY:
    1. Only watch shows that you would watch in English (or your native language) or you would get bored and learning languages should be fun.
    2. For the beginning parts of your language learning (3-9 months) use English subtitles, and then remove them and replace it with the language you’re studying.
    3. When you learn a new word put it in Anki (flash card program that forces you to remember the word)
    4. Some really good websites to use are Viki rakutan (I definitely spelled that wrong but it’s good for Chinese, Japanese, and korean), Fluentu, and Yabla (has a lot more languages)
Good luck on your language adventures 😊💕

For a person that’s already fed up with school studying I know that I’d never be motivated enough to learn a language by studying it. It prolly will take a long ass time but it is possible. I’m Saudi Arabian so my first language is Arabic and considering the fact that Arabic is a pretty difficult and different language it’s kinda hard to learn any other languages. I don’t think you can learn a language from zero just by watching a TV show. I am watching animes for 6 years now and cannot speak Japanese at all. But I do think that TV shows are a good source of learning a language if you are actually learning the language with books or in a school, then you can practice your hearing comprehension and pick up new words. That’s how I learned english, was learning English in school and watched lots of tv shows to improve it but learning a language just with a TV show? Nahh

Nah... I don't think so... I learned English and German just by watching tv and nothing else... It wouldn't make sense from a evolutionary perspective to not be able to learn a language just by listening... What if one day you get stranded in a land where you don't know their language? The body would have to have a safe plan for that.... And that is being able to learn a language just by listening.

I got into kpop and kdramas In January of 2020 - so it’s been over a year now since I’ve been hearing the Korean language like daily. I had no intention in actually learning Korean and honestly I’m still not seriously learning it but I generally pick up things (especially languages) pretty fast. So even I have noticed that I can make full sentences in Korean now, just by watching and listening to Korean ppl speak. (Obviously im not a pro lol) but if I can learn without even tryin that hard - you can definitely do it!! believe me, like if you actually pay attention - you’ll for sure be able to get to atleast a late beginner stage or something! So good luck to everyone trying to learn a language :)

Your channel is inspirational Buddy. I'm from the Caribbean and I literally just found your channel. I would like to see you write this book in all the languages you speak. Up for the challenge? I would personally challenge myself to learn all the languages you speak just so I can buy your book 6 times. I'm getting your book for sure!

I've been planning on learning Spanish and Korean. And so far, I can understand 10-25% of spanish that I read(5% of spanish being spoken to me) and I only know how to say "I am american/korean/japanese" in korean. Oh And I also know the korean word for milk haha, so I have a lot of work to do! Thanks for the vids!

Watching television totally works! Since my dad watched anime I pretty much got into it when I was 5 ;) so now I actually know a lot of Japanese.

Some good motivational & inspiring tips you have on your channel. Have been learning Japanese for the past 5 months (via tutor weekly classes), but now in that 'lacking motivation' as it gets more difficult. I watch Japanese TV and always find myself pausing every two mins or so just so I can translate signs etc, it's a good way to keep practicing the written language, but I still haven't found a good tool for listening as TV shows speak so fast I struggle to pick up a clear sentence. Anyway, thanks for your channel & tips... subscribed

I tend to go with TH-cam videos or Podcasts instead of TV, because most of the TV shows I find not very interesting or a little bit too simple and obviously don't reflect genuine conversation with native speakers. Am I the only one with this problem?

Thank you for sharing !! I have done loads of research on how to acquire French and came across the Netflix option (still upset I haven’t found a working vpn to binge on Harry Potter movies I’m French) a whole back !! I have used it to watch a ton of English speaking movies in French that I am very familiar with and know particularly all of the lines. It does help tremendously 💯
