Your u looks like w because when you connect it with a different letter your u’s tail would turn into an upstroke. Trust me I do calligraphy. Also don’t be a pain in the ass and don’t fight against the world’s perspective.
You are using a G-nib which is flexible. You can just add pressure for a wider line on the 'd' and 't' ascenders, no need to mimic it.
