    FYI: 🥰I'm very aware that the blue skirt featured is currently a little on the snug side, this is because I'm carrying a little extra curve than I usually like to - I blame my love of chocolate for this 🤦‍♀🤣🤣 but I've kept it in the video as I'm all for transparency and keeping it real with you all xx

      @@allabouttheoutfit I thought it looked great - and that outfit looked good on you both, too! I like the overall balance of outfits which emphasise curvy hips though. I often have to buy jeans from curve ranges because I have a 12 inch difference between my hips and waist. When I was younger, I hated being curvy and thought there was something wrong with me. That was in the 90s, and curvy figures were underrepresented back then. I met my best friend in my 20s and her figure is very like yours. I think she’s gorgeous and that helped me see that hips are beautiful features and not something to be ‘played down’. These days, I’m most comfy in skinny jeans. I feel positive about my hips as long as I can get clothes to fit properly, so they aren’t bagging on the waist. I think it’s sad some women still feel they have to disguise beautiful hips!

    It's fascinating that both silhouettes look good on "pear" shaped figures even if the individual might not feel at home in the outfit. The psychology of style is really well illustrated in this video.

    I think this shows how a larger bust really needs a lower neck line, especially when balanced with a longer body length. It also balances out the wider skirts.

    • @trishagoodwin4069
      @trishagoodwin4069 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I agree with you! Struggling to see how these two ladies are the same shape as one has a larger bust than the other. I would say the fairer lady is pear shaped and the dark one hourglass. As I aged, and with hormone changes, I went from pear to hourglass and developed a bust, but stayed the same waist and hip size, the waist being two dress sizes smaller. So, this meant changing clothing style from those knitted dresses and simple lines to lower necklines and more attention on bust and hips as well as waist, as they became more equal in size. All a question of balance really!

    I'd be interested to see how the swapped outfits look with swapped hairstyles as well. Despite the fact that you're both "pear" shaped you're very clearly on the opposite ends of the Yin/Yang spectrum in terms of Kibbe. I'm not an expert but I'd guess Dramatic and Romantic, respectively. But I think each of your hairstyles is making the swap even more jarring. A Dramatic with long straight hair wearing a Romantic dress (and a Romantic with wavy, pinned up hair wearing a Dramatic outfit) is heavily contributing to the lack of harmony in the swapped outfits. You very clearly know how to dress and style for your specific types!

    It's so interesting that you both look so awkward in each other's clothes. When my boys were babies, we started dressing them in suits for church. A few years later, we moved from the city to the country and the kids were very harassed for dressing up when their friends wore shorts, jeans and flannel with holes. As adults, my boys look really sharp dressed up or down because they are confident either way. If we're not comfortable and confident with ourselves and our style, it shows.

    Personal style aside, it is striking how even small differences in proportion (shoulder width, torso to leg proportion, bust height, arm length) makes such a dramatic difference in how a garment sits on the body and consequently on how it suits each person.

  • @hopenield8234
    @hopenield8234 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    This video showed me that sometimes what felt like just personal style was maybe also influenced by body proportion. The channels owner felt more comfortable in the green floral dress which did have a smaller print - but also had a higher waist that actually sat at her natural waist whereas the other dresses had waists that began too low for her. She also had longer legs which would definitely contribute to feeling more comfortable in trousers and jeans. I also have the same colours and the same pear shape but being shorter legged, once I started dresssing more for my proportions I was attracted more to dresses than trousers. In fact I dress pretty much exactly like the second woman. Of course It’s not that you can’t dress outside your colours/proportions etc but it takes a lot more thinking with every outfit.

    • @allabouttheoutfit
      @allabouttheoutfit  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And it's always fun to play around with new styles, shapes and colours ❤️ I definitely wear a mix between trousers, skirts and dresses for this reason, I like to mix it up so that I'm excited by what I'm wearing 😊

    What a fun video and experiment! You both looked great in all the looks but the varying comfort levels were very telling. It's the second outfit swap that made me go "Oh, look! Playing dress up for adults!" And that's not that far off. As kids we play dress up to experiment with who we are. Maybe as adults we need to play dress up every now and then to make sure what we wear expresses who we know ourselves to be.

    • @allabouttheoutfit
      @allabouttheoutfit  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes exactly that😍 it's how we discover our style personality and likes / dislikes..... Even as I've watched this video back I can see that bold colours are my preferred choice and maybe a little more pattern may well creep into my wardrobe soon - definitely a worth while experiment ❤️

  • @EileenR11
    @EileenR11 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Fascinating to see this. I think both of you looked good in most outfits, but Sian very much suits v or lower necklines. As a long tine watcher of Sian's channel I was surprised by how well most of the bottoms looked on her as she is so self-conscious about this area. But overall it's a perfect illustration of the importance of wearing what makes you feel most like yourself, and that there is no simple right or wrong approach to style.

    This was fun and educational. I also noted that the two of you also consistently chose different neck lines. That in its self can make a huge difference as have learned personally.

    • @allabouttheoutfit
      @allabouttheoutfit  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great spot, well done! I tend to go for a higher neckline (most of the time) as I have a smaller bust and this creates the illusion of a curvier bust line, helping to balance out my hips a little more ❤ Sian already has this balance in her overall shape ❤

    • @Tess78uk
      @Tess78uk 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@allabouttheoutfitanother way of thinking about this is that you are balancing VERTICAL proportions (rather than horizontal ones). If you have a proportionally shorter torso, wearing a higher neckline helps to create more balance in the vertical plane. Wearing a low cut neckline can lead to visual shortening of an already ‘short’ upper body and appears less balanced. Similarly, if you have a longer torso, bringing the neckline lower helps to shorten the torso visually, bringing more balance overall.
      I have a proportionally short upper body and realised higher necklines tend to be flattering for me for this reason. I think people tend to underestimate how important visual manipulation of vertical proportions is to personal style because all the well known approaches focus on horizontal proportions. I think to really unpick what’s going on with proportions, you need to factor in the impact of vertical proportions. I also think shoulder to hip proportions are important (and often overlooked) because they influence overall balance in relation to both the bust and hips. I think the things we are drawn to are often an unconscious attempt to bring visual harmony between all these elements. You are similar in some key measurements, but garments are flowing differently on the upper torso because in one case the shoulders are the feature balancing the hips, and in the other the bust is the most prominent feature. Anyone who becomes more busty with age learns how this changes how clothes fit. Essentially, more waist definition becomes helpful because clothes are less likely to flow from the shoulders in a way that creates visual balance, and instead ‘hang’ outwards from the bust instead.
      The biggest caveat of all this I’d say, is that ‘visual balance’ is subjective. What is pleasing and ‘balanced’ to my eye is not necessarily the same for another person. And some people actively enjoy playing with and distorting naturalistic proportions. I think the key thing is to dress in a way that creates proportions that make you feel most comfortable and confident. That’s going to vary compared to other people because their bodies are different AND their preferences for visual proportions are likely different too.

I have made a few dresses and skirts but don't really feel comfortable. I do not like them skimming my hips, but if too full, I always say I look like an elephant on stilts because the lower part of my legs are not very chunky. What a fun experiment! It once again reminds me how things like fashion and colour can impact one's mood and perceptions. After taking some time to figure out which silhouettes I enjoy wearing and which colours look good for my skin tone, I find that dressing myself has become faster and more fun. Figuring out my personal style has been a great mood enhancer. I move differently in the world when I select the things that make me feel wonderful inside. I think that your experiment showed this brilliantly. Also, this will hopefully encourage me to stop acquiring things that look good on other people instead of what looks on me. I should just focus on being myself! P. S. I think that you look great in your blue skirt! No disclaimer needed!

    This video was fun and did make me reflect a little on things I have been trying to wear in my spring capsule, you know the old find the thing in the back of your closet and style it. I see that same reaction om my face as you both had here. just lack of comfort. My tell is when I randomly see my reflection and have a sinking feeling and wish I were wearing anything else.

    The difference is in your contrast. Sian's coloring is very high contrast. Nicola's is less, hence the different choices. Sian, I would say to you enjoy it while you can! It's the same contrast i had when I was young and I loved it. Now with gray/white hair, the colors are similar the contrast is not.

    This was brilliant fun to watch! 😊 Really got me thinking...
    I am a similar shape to both of you, although being a lot older I don't expose cleavage or legs any more (my boobs and knees are nobody's business these days!) I've realised I wear elements of both your styles. There are lots of solid colours in my wardrobe, particularly trousers and fitted tops (knitted tees), although there are prints too (woven blouses). Shape-wise I tend more towards the Sian-like fit and flare to accentuate the waist and disguise the hips; so, wide legged trousers, flared skirts, gathered skirts/dresses etc. I'll go floral on my top half, and plain or stripes/plaids below the waist if wearing separates. Although I often flip that too, with plain tanks/tees paired with printed skirts in the summer.
    Since retiring I've been making more pretty flouncy dresses, because - why not? I don't have many meetings or formal events to attend these days, so I'm rediscovering my feminine side! 😁
    Personal style keeps evolving as your lifestyle changes, and that's something to celebrate! 🎉

    You guys don't suit the same colour story, as the one on the right has a high contrast and suits deeper colours. The lady on the left has low contrast and suits light colours, this is why she feels uncomfortable in a bold print. She also has square shoulders which is why she doesn't mind something hugging her hips. The lady on the right has softer shoulders and a bigger bust so the A shaped outfits are more flattering.
