As I am getting older I find the lighter pinks and beiges suit me more than bright colours. I also choose dresses with defined waists, as they are less bulky and frumpy. You got to go with what looks good, some of your suggestions would age me as the brighter colours wash me out. I love the brighter colours but I am choosing what suits me.

I think hair color matter also. I allowed my hair to go gray around 58-59 years old. Previous to that it was a medium to dark blonde/very light brown. It added warmth and allowed me to wear earth tones. The hair color no longer suited my face though. The white brightened it up and I feel I look better with it. (I now have very light skin) I look horrible in black and dark navy now as well as in very muted and dusty colors. With colors that are muted, I disappear, I have no color other than any makeup I am wearing, with colors that are excessively bright I kind of glow as my hair is very bright as well. I like a solid color that isn't at the lower or higher 20% of the brightness range. I pop, but don't blind people. I have to avoid off-white colors as it makes my hair look "dirty and dingy" and any browns now have to be cooler. I still love jewel tones.
You are spot on with this Christine! The colors that flat, or you are always going to be the best choices, and it really comes down to understanding what colors work best for you, and what colors are either overwhelming or make you look washed out. It’s a game changer when you get the colors, right. This was intended to be very general, but colors are very specific to your individual coloring. I love that you are figuring out the ones that work best for you. I seriously think it’s one of the most important things we can do for ourselves as we get older.
And hair color changes everything! As a dark brunette, I look better in very different colors than a blonde. I have often referred to brunette colors and blonde colors on my channel. Lol. Gray colors and redhead colors are also very important
So good! Thank you. I love that you show the frumpy and then what to do instead. I was especially surprised by the segment on nude shoes. . Would love the video about prints.
Very interesting. I have had several color analyses including Color Me Beautiful ages ago and I got winter, bright winter, clear winter, cool bright deep. I have to be careful with pastels to avoid soft and dusty tones. Blush pink and peachy or beige pink are the worst. The only yellow I like on me is a bright one the color of a lemon. Not golden or mustard or soft buttery yellow. Not easy to find. I love a turquoise shoe.
I don’t often comment since I watch your YT videos on my TV but had to get my iPad to leave a comment today! This video was great! I really never thought about this before but, of course it’s so obvious now. 🤷♀️ I am such a fan of nude shoes but I will certainly pay more attention to the details from now on. You look great in orange!
You nailed how an item in one color can look horrible and in another color look so much better. So glad I watched this video, as I was thinking of not wearing jewel tones and going more with pastels - disaster averted. 😅
Nada, I do so enjoy hearing your strong opinions on pastels and fashion in general! Yeah! No matter our age we can take back our power! A light wash denim blue is as pastel as I ever get, otherwise my colorful wardrobe starts at about midrange on the color saturation scale. Recently I even found a shade of golden yellow that makes me happy. Thank you for your incisive fashion analysis! I don’t always agree, but you always give me something to think about. Cheers! Sheila
I’m very medium in coloring, also warm, and have never been able to pull black off. Even though I’m older now, my Spring coloring guides my choices. I can also borrow a few Autumn tones. Camel is my best neutral, but I also love olive green that matches my eyes. I’m trying to go gray, but am going to lighten my dark blonde/light brown to medium blonde first. As you have shown, I also CANNOT wear pastels at all. I have to stay in-between light and deep.
Oh boy. Just got light brown seude sandals. Guess I'm modern! I didn't get mine at Marshall's, but I noticed they had a lot in that color. Even a couple of Italian ones.
everything is always better in bright colours, or sharp monochromatic colours. I can't imagine and haven't seen pastel washed out colours working well on anyone really.
I found this so fascinating! I never realized the color was the reason I thought some things looked frumpy. Yes I'd love to see more viedeos like this. Thank you!
When it comes to fashion rules, I take it with a grain of salt. I think its more important to learn how to style clothes to flatter your personal shape/coloring. Use your eyes to decide if something looks flattering or frumpy. Nude flats may look frumpy with a more mature dress, but cute with shorts etc. It also depends if the shoes are ugly in the first place. 😂
I understand why you recommend bright colors for items that are on the edge of frumpy, however, it would also be nice to see an entire video on how to make sure items aren’t frumpy when you do want the more classic, or basic neutral colors. I think you touched on it in this video. If you need a neutral color then make sure the style/ design is not frumpy or borderline. I would just enjoy a full video with more examples. I would never buy a bright green shoe ( not my style) and I need more neutral so it goes with more outfits. I don’t want more items then necessary ( minimalism) and if I’m going to spend a lot of money on one item ( quality shoes) I want it to go with almost everything and therefore I’ll always choose a neutral that I can wear more often, goes with more and is more timeless and can wear for much longer. Not a ‘trendy’ color.
Great idea for a video Sarah! I do have an anti-trend video coming out on Friday about wardrobe essentials but not about accessories so I will plan one on that.
Thank you for all the work you do for your presentations. Your insight into styles and colours is excellent. I am 77 with white hair and tend to buy clothes and shoes in black, white or grey. Maybe it is time to reach out to jewel tones.
Wonderful guidelines and very helpful! On that note hope you don't mind me adding re pastels for the Mother of the Bride (or even Wedding Party attendants); if or when photos are in black and white the garments will often read as a shade of white that in turn can compete with the white Bridal gown.
Good question! When an outfit is already flattering you can choose the colored shoe. If an outfit is a little less flattering than the leg lengthening shoe can help!
Love your advice! As a 30 year old I was typed as a “bright spring” with fair skin, blue eyes, and light warm brown hair. Now that my hair is white, I keep seeing that I must be soft and cool. I hate those colors on me, and they make me feel old and frumpy. Should I just ignore that advice and wear what I like?
@@maryannwheeler7170 I think you can wear most colors with that beautiful coloring, and yes to wearing what you like. My one piece of guidance not having seen you is to pick your favorite colors and maybe stay away from overly warm shades. Feel free to send me a pic if you like!
I do a color analysis for everybody in my program, but a shortcut is to look at the colors that you have naturally, so your hair and eye and skin tones. You want your clothing colors to have the same characteristics. So, for example, I have a deep coloring so I look for clothes that are deep and bright. Hope that helps!
I was with a woman in her 70’s that was buying a birthday present for a friend of hers. I picked out a purple blouse because I thought it would look good with her friends red hair. She said older women should never wear purple because it’s associated with older women. I told her friend about the conversation. She laughed and said that she actually loves the color purple.
lol! I’ve never heard that about purple being associated with older women although there was that red and purple movement a while back. I think it’s more important to pay attention to the colors that suit you.
A very helpful video thank you so much ! I thought I had a warm undertone but although I was a strawberry blond as a young woman I’m thinking I’m getting lost in pastels although some neutrals look great, it’s all very confusing.
Black is not my best dark neutral. I am trying to move to navy or chocolate. My question is what shoes to put with these colors? I am also fairly short so I want to elongate my legs. My understanding is that to elongate your shoes should flow with the color of the pants. Am I correct? Do I need navy and brown shoes?
Great question! Navy or brown would work of course but they are not the only options. Nude shoes that match your skin or a metallic would also lengthen your legs.
I once said I wouldn’t wear neon ( at my age/68)…- now that statement is Wrong. Lol. The light green that is on trend now is SO close to a neon that I stand corrected. I really like this color on me ( I have platinum blonde mix gray hair naturally), and have it in clothing and accessories. Who knew!
As i have aged the colour and warmth has leeched out of my skintone. Black is no longer my friend and I need those medium or or lighttones: nothing muddy or harsh. Agree those very light dusty colours are aging and very mother of the bride.. I like light and clear colours but it has to be a modern silhouette and minimal pattern as without care garments with those colours can look frumpy
So good to understand how your skin color has softened. It happens to everyone and we have to adjust our palette accordingly, Sounds like you are doing a great job with that! Thanks so much for the comment!
Yes and that’s why I said that you always have to pick colors that are flattering to you, but even within your season, I would argue that some are better options than others. In my opinion a frumpy shoe is still a frumpy shoe even if it’s a good color for you.
We *tend* to desaturate with age: skin color, lip color, and hair color. Mostly, we’re watching/reading “rule of thumb” recommendations so following in that vein, we will typically look/feel/put our best foot forward if, as we progress in our desaturation, we desaturate our worn colors to harmonize with our physical coloring. However, your personality is the driver behind any changes you may want to make. Imagine Nada going gray, her bright reddish orange lip and top may overwhelm a future self. Future Nada will still love color, but she may be more comfortable toning it down a couple of steps. So think a touch of gray or sepia added to her lips and top … going more to a Firebrick or Grenadine coloring from Vermillion. If we wish to harmonize, we may need to adjust the tone of our favorite colors, but not necessarily the hue itself.
Not sure if this will help, but in my case (colors done in my 20’s; but even then I was a rare mix (winter/autumn) according to ‘color me beautiful’. In the book, I could wear the vibrant autumn colors well, (the muted not as well); My Complexion looked vibrant and healthy. I could wear all the winter colors, but my complexion suffered by looking a bit pale/red/showing every flaw & breakout. I had hazel green eyes, dark brown hair ( almost black) with golden red natural highlights, ((my brother had black hair with natural blue- black highlights)). My skin was olive complexion and tanned deeply. The deeper vibrant colors made me ‘appear’; the soft colors made me ‘disappear’ , so to speak. Beige looked terrible on me. But, when I started going gray, I started dying my hair lighter shades of brown; then after a salon mishap, I went to light blonde hair - which suited exactly the same colors AND ADDED all the LIGHT shades I couldn’t wear well before! Nada defines me as a LIGHT. Even Beige looks great on me. // A Later book by same name/diff author / color me beautiful- had 12 season categories - I ended up a clear spring there…../ BUt, Black is still one of my Best colors.
I agree that pastels make clothes look dated, specifically, 1970’s, ugh. The only pastel I can stomach is the pale, lovely ballerina pink. That color is truly beautiful💕
Thanks for the comment. That depends on a number of factors. Women who only suit dark hair can stay dark or go gray, but lightening their hair color often doesn’t work.
You know it. I’m turning 61 years this month. I am a 7/28/1963 baby. I stopped coloring at least a year ago. I still have residual at the bottom (four inches -fake). I’m not all gray. Both of my parents in their eighties are only 10 percent gray. This is genetics. My mom never colored her hair a day in her life. The quality of her hair is the same as when she was a teenager. Both have fine textured hair. Go figure. I have more gray them both of them. Todays STRESS! 😂😂
@@Bethoflife it depends on your coloring. I would look ridiculous with lighter hair. :) Dark hair emphasizes wrinkles when it looks harsh on your coloring, but when it suits you, you can keep it dark and maybe soften the color a little.
Absolutely! These are general rules based on the modern/dated aspects of these colors. I have done other videos on color types and I do a color analysis for all of my clients, but that's not what this video is about. Thanks for the comment!
I find as I age I still wear the colours that suit me but in toned down shades. Ladies go grey or fair, ditch dark hair and eyebrows. Skip big jewelery, bold prints and lose or oversize clothing.
You really hate nude shoes. As a blonde I almost never wear black shoes with my fair legs and my light coloring. I wear tan, saddle brown is as dark as I go. Black shoes on very light legs and light c.othing look awful on a blonde you notoce them a black away. Also a greatsource Jewel tones except teal and navy also not great for blondes. It is better to be guided by a fashion person with your coloring whatever it is. A redhead is good source for a redhead...they look amazing colors most others dont.
Thanks for the comment! I am not a fashion person per se. I am a personal stylist and do color analysis on my clients regularly, and have been doing them for 20 years. Completely agree with you on black shoes on blondes. That's why I always recommend a shoe color close to the color of your hair. So for blondes that would be a beige or nude shoe. There are just a lot of bad nude shoes out there, but I definitely love nude shoes in general and recommend them all the time.
We may be using different words for the same thing, but in the system that I use, Wine is definitely not muted because there is no Gray mixed in with it. It is a jewel tone because it is derived from the color of a garnet. Hope that clears up my explanation.
@@bonnieblenders4606 Oh, ok. I will definitely have to try that! I use an old Tablet, maybe 10 years old. How do you slow it down? I've never had to use that function because never had a problem with people speaking so fast like she does. Thank you.

Even Beige looks great on me. // A Later book by same name/diff author / color me beautiful- had 12 season categories - I ended up a clear spring there…../ BUt, Black is still one of my Best colors.
Large prints are ageing on older women
I can't get over the 30000 roses! (
I agree that pastels make clothes look dated, specifically, 1970’s, ugh. The only pastel I can stomach is the pale, lovely ballerina pink. That color is truly beautiful💕
Suede over patent in nude kitten heel shoe
How much does 30,000 black magic roses cost (adjusted for inflation) 🌹
Fortunately I can't remember! LOL I do know that the hotel reused them all week and gifted them to employees which made me super happy.
I think the worst thing you can do is keep dying hair dark as you age. Skin tone changes and it looks so fake whatever colour dress you wear.
You're supposed to go
lighter as you are ! Dark
hair emphasizes wrinkles.
@@Bethoflife it depends on your coloring. I would look ridiculous with lighter hair. :) Dark hair emphasizes wrinkles when it looks harsh on your coloring, but when it suits you, you can keep it dark and maybe soften the color a little.
@@Bethoflife not for most of the world's population. Really only northern europeans should go lighter, not the rest.
Isn't it most important to know vhat is your skin colour ?? Varm cool ??
Absolutely! These are general rules based on the modern/dated aspects of these colors. I have done other videos on color types and I do a color analysis for all of my clients, but that's not what this video is about. Thanks for the comment!
If for older women, why did you use a younger women 🧐
I get this question all the time. These are the models that are used by the brands. Sadly, I do not get to choose the models.
@@NadaManley thank you
And the YT commercial leading into this was about black and white clothing. haha
Don't mind nude. But I agree
Yes, do a program about patterns. They are my downfall. I get so frustrated looking at patterns, that I walk away from them.
Also a greatsource
Jewel tones except teal and navy also not great for blondes. It is better to be guided by a fashion person with your coloring whatever it is. A redhead is
good source for a redhead...they look amazing colors most others dont.
“Wine” is muted and NOT a jewel tone.
We may be using different words for the same thing, but in the system that I use, Wine is definitely not muted because there is no Gray mixed in with it. It is a jewel tone because it is derived from the color of a garnet. Hope that clears up my explanation.
Some clothing to you for looking it's not the color some clothes are very useful looking
It's not that all nude shoes are frumpy; it's that all frumpy shoes come in nude.
I am a mature lady. Not a young woman I'm over. 75
@@laurabroussard9751 this is true for many of the women here. Welcome. :)
But if you have a old face you shouldn't wear a young clothes too much something you can get away with
Please speak a little bit slower.
You can turn down the speed of the video. 😊 I actually have mine sped up so I don't know what her speed is in original
@@bonnieblenders4606
Oh, ok. I will definitely have to try that! I use an old Tablet, maybe 10 years old. How do you slow it down? I've never had to use that function because never had a problem with people speaking so fast like she does.
Thank you.
@@suzannelawson9215 when you open the video up at the top of the TH-cam there is a symbol that looks like a round gear. Click on that and it will say playback speed and you can change it to you liking.
@@suzannelawson9215 in the video on the top right you will see the settings option. The one that looks like the cog. Tap on that, you will get a drop down and the second option is play back speed. Tap that and select the speed you would like.
Just get on with it please.
People can look at your face and know that you're older and a little girl's dress
Nadal, Did you say you had 30000 roses at your wedding? 😃
Yes lol🤣
Did you go to a special school to learn to speak faster than a human ear can hear? It’s obvious that you studied and practiced well. You had to have graduated at the top of your class!!!
