Second time this week I've heard about "comfort rooms." Never in my thirty years have I heard this way of saying bathroom, now it haunts me apparently.
When I first got here in Philippines I was baffled as well. In school, everyone including the teachers would just call it "CR" for short. And I eventually asked, "What's a CR?". They said Comfort Room and I asked why. They said it's called that because that's where you go to relieve yourself and thus feel the sense of comfort. Loool... Ok.. XD Also the CR in the houses only has a toilet and a sink. Their bathrooms or shower rooms have a shower/bath or both, along with a toilet and a sink. I have never heard them calling their restroom a bathroom or restroom. Just CR. 10000% they know you're a foreigner if you asked for the restroom or bathroom. XD
@@CapucineNighly Well tbh I never really understood why foreigners call it 'restroom' either, with the same reason that got you wondering. I mean, people don't go there to 'rest', do they? So that's why 'comfort room' made the most sense to me lol

One of my best friends is Filipino and she asked me to watch this with her- I believe a friend of hers acted in it. It was so much fun, just laughing at how bad it was. I'll never forget that crusty ghost.
Hell House LLC is _fantastic._ I went through a 'found footage' phase, and lemme tell you, I waded through _so_ much shit. Hell House was one of the very few good ones
The main reason why this movie is terrifying for me is cuz it reminds me of my retreats back when I was in a Catholic school, it's basically an over night stay in sometimes haunted location with nuns and priests. No joke, I saw a ghost in one of them. It's just something that hits home for young filipinos like me. I mean the location, not the actual story
so i work in the marketing world. and these "so scary people cant finish" headlines are made up (OBVIOUSLY, we all knew that) but what they accomplishing is not having people think that they wont be able to watch it, but instead it gets all the people that think to themselves "ill show you wrong,i bet you i can finish it cause im not scared of anything." the crowd that is more doing things cause you tell them otherwise. in the end when they watch it and arent scared who cares? cause on our end we already got you to watch the movie.
@@NadDew no, the market research shows that people can be fooled time and time again. marketing is just campaigns that set out to trick customers. and its VERY effective.
The scariest thing to come out of the Philippines is a pissed off mom. When you hear your name followed by angry tagalog, it's the most frightening thing in the world. Especially when you can hear they only have one slipper on when they're coming at you.
My ex's family was from the Philippines. And her mom yelling in their language was the scariest thing I ever heard. I cant listen to Tagalog without remember it lolol
I really liked Eerie, watched it in the theaters when it first came out. The experience of watching it in the movie theater vs watching it on Netflix at home, the difference is night and day. Plus Bea Alonzo (Ms. Patt) is a national treasure.
You serious or trying to be sarcastic? I think that term "comfort room" is really only used in the Philippines. Common terms are really "restroom", "men's room", "ladies room", "john". You are aware of that, right?
Eerie was scary for me bc it was exactly how my high school days are- from the nuns, to the look of the school, to the uniforms and the mf disciplinary practice😔 it hit too close to home
Hereditary is the only movie in years that genuinely scared the hell out of me. Normally I will watch horror movies over and over but I haven't watched this one since. It actually made me jump, scream and bury my head in my husband's arm.... more than once. It really is one of the best, if not THE best horror movie I've seen in a long time. Highly recommend.
Hereditary had an effect on me that lasted even after I left the cinema, which is rare. It was a sunny day, people were sitting in cafés, laughing and talking... it was such a contrast that everything seemed warped and surreal. I loved it.
I was absolutely horrified and scared out of my mind the first time I watched it. It was one of the only times i was genuinely screaming during a movie. I've watched it 6 times since, and now I can appreciate the fine details without having to look through my tears lol
Bc it’s all so…subtle. It builds on you, it gives all the info you need to know this family, yet so little that it leaves you guessing. There’s no real jump scares, they’re just sudden like life is. Hereditary and Midsummer is the only movies that leave an impression on me
Yessssss!! I cried, screamed, and almost puked the first time I watched it. I considered myself jaded before I saw it. Just like you I've only watched it once but now I am going to watch it again. I was thinking about this yesterday.
I'll tell you why it's so skin crawlingly uncomfortably terrifying. It builds up to it like a slow burn but more than that. It deals with real thing. Real lives and relationships. The Nun is creepy and demons are scary but in my head I know they're not real. Hereditary on the other hand dealt with real consequences of real stress on relationships. That shit hits home hard. 😅
Speaking of filipino movies you should review the movie "The healing" it's another filipino movie that revolves around a curse of some kind. It didn't really scare me.. It just creeped me out, more likely the badly edited eyeballs. You'll know it when you see it.. Hope you see this.
Ooooh was this the one with Kim Chiu and Vilma Santos? That was creepy (and kinda gross) as all heck but yeah, not the 'can't go to sleep alone' type of scary.
that movie traumatised me when we watched it in school when i was 10. i genuinely thought my mum's eyes were going to change to those badly edited ones LMAO
i laughed so hard when watching that movie. it should be a horror movie, but damn if you all ever rewatch it, you'll notice that their clothes are the same color or shade of color, from when they went to that witch doctor until the end of the movie
I think what the articles you saw saying that this film is incredibly scary is by horror movie standards in the Philippines. This movie is literally one of the only few (by few, I mean FEW) "good" horror movies in the Philippines. Films outside the Romance and Drama genres don't really sell as much in our country, that's why the horror movie industry here has been lackluster because studios don't put much effort. However, if you wanna watch a great Filipino horror/psychological movie, I'd recommend watching Seklusyon (Seclusion), this is the type of film that creeps under your skin and makes you think. I swear, I still get goosebumps thinking about the film and its ending. It's def. worth a watch, you should check it out.
Also there’s lot of religion (mainly Christianity) and superstition in the Philippines, so this kind of horror works much better over there, whereas western audiences are mainly atheist so it isn’t really effective and feels very cliche to us
My favorite is The Healing; I rate movies based on how paranoid they make me (so The Exorcist isn’t scary to me but Final Destination is) and The Healing, although the CGI is atrocious, made me paranoid about accepting things too good to be true. Also made me not trust albolaryo 100%.
@MistaGG really good horror movie recommendation. "Noroi: The Curse" . This japanese movie lets you with a really uneasy feeling because it's shot documentary style (something we're used to seeing in real life) instead of personal footage style like the Blair Witch Project. The thing with personal footage is that we'd never get so see something like that irl because the police or authorities would not allow the public to see it, and so we know it's a horror movie when we watch something like that, that suspends our belief (we know we're watching a horror movie and not something that could be real). However, we're used to watching documentaries, and because this movie is shot documentary-style (and is based in real events - they always are I know) it leaves us with an uneasy feeling that it might actually be real. To top it off, the movie is available on youtube.

this movie was hyped over here in the Philippines too, back when it premiered. Many of my friends said it was scary. I didn't really feel that way watching it. It's pretty competently made I guess, looks better than most horror that have come out of our country in recent years.
Hell House LLC is one of my favorite scary movies. It uses found footage well, the cast is good together, it has genuine scars. I wish GG would review this. Also Rec and Grave Encounters
Great review as usual! Fun and succinct. And yes, Hell House LLC is so damn good, I'd like to see you cover it to demonstrate that there are still really solid low budget Horror flicks out there!
As a filipino who grew up watching the original english dub in cartoons rather than the god awful tagalog dub and have been praised for being great in english, I feel you. I feel like I had to sacrifice being decent at tagalog for me to be good at english. You have no idea how many times a day my mom corrects my tagalog, how difficult it is for me to write a coherent sentence or even in, what is suppose to be my native tongue, read both aloud and in silence. It hurts my head so much!
YEEEEESSS I'm so happy someone recognised that whole sham with Veronica back in 2018. I too was pulled in by the hype, watched it, and it was complete ass. You gotta re-watch it, it has one of the funniest "demon affecting you because you are possessed and doing weird shit randomly" scenes in it were the main character is sitting at a table with family just eating and then the demon makes her freeze up and not be able to put food in her mouth. It was funny as hell. Rest of the movie was super predictable and un-scary.
I literally just finished watching Veronica during halloween with the roomates and gf and I 100% agree with you. We were making jokes every other scene and the whole thing just felt so unexplained and that blind nun basically had no impact but as a plot device LOL truly over hyped
Yo yo. GG. Just some added backdrop. Eerie was directed by Mikhail Red one of the better received directors due to his style mimicking his previous independent endeavors with budget from big studios/publishers. Eerie is also one of the better modern horror movies here in the Philippines. I have been involved in some indirect capacity with a movie of his, Block Z as I was part of the team that did a mini game for it as part of the promotion. His works while not very groundbreaking in the global scale, bucks the trend of cliche and cheesy big budget horror movies made here that are just done to cash in during December. IF you are curious about more, I suggest giving "Seklusyon" a shot, I found it better and tackles similar themes.

Yo,the scariest haunted house attractions, are the ones with no scares.Because you are anticipating a scare for the whole time, but when you leave you just realize that you just walked through a random house
Actually Eerie was not originally a netflix movie. Managed to see it at theaters before it was released on netflix. But I was alone at the cinema when I watch this but I didn't get scared just one bit. The Reason why I was all alone in the cinema: - There was a power outage in our area and I was in the mall at that time. - I already bought a ticket for the afternoon released. - They were already playing the movie in the cinema and there are already a lot of movie goers inside but in the middle of the movie the power went off so the movie got cut off and customer left the cinema unhappy. - They were about to close the cinema and they started to give refunds for the tickets but then suddenly the power came back so I didn't get my ticket refunded. But I've watch a lot of horror movies from the Philippines and pretty much this was a descent one because honestly our horror movie sucks.
@@mishixi1505 honestly I agree on this. I've seen some indie horror film. Not scary but bumawi naman sa originality at story. Mostly mga mainstream horror movies yung hindi maganda. But for a mainstream horror movie this is one of those descent one.
Dunno the name for the trope, but those "when you see it you'll shit bricks" pics are the same thing in image format, if you're trying to chase the thrill.
This wasn't my cup of tea either but when it comes to Filipino horror movies, I'll go with Kuwaresma (2019) or internationally called The Entity. Trust me, this one's better.
@@JingDalagan i think its like how thai horror movies from the 90s are more so religious (Buddhist principles) than today. Its just a reflection of the society's religious anxiety and awareness, but its better move on since this trope is kinda repeating itself already. If you look at Japanese horror, the height of which was the ring, but the formula stayed until today and didnt changed. Theyved stagnated. In contrast, this is happening right now in the Philippines where movies are mostly the same, cliches, rehash, rebrand, and stereotyped (poor, rich, half foreign, from somewhere, and etc). That is why filipino films are dying.
@@yvsevyse4562 The part about Japanese horror stagnating is sad. On the other hand, how can we explain best the failure of the last Ring flick from Hollywood but with the Japanese horror film industry itself? Filipino horror on the other hand has stagnated long before the Shake, Rattle and Roll franchise was finally laid to rest? SRR was originally a showcase for the best directors in the Philippines trying their hand in the horror genre (and sadly, THREE did the 3 episodes in 1 film trope better now than SRR ever had now because they chose to get directors whose main genre is horror). If we make @Mista GG do the SRR marathon, he'd have content for the rest of the year.
@@JingDalagan you mustnt compare Hollywood movies with Japanese themes since most of the time it fails to capture the essence or concept it is trying convey, folklore, local belief, ideology, and society - specially remakes. They will just wash out ideas they dont see fit. For shake rattle and roll, I dont think thats a good idea since the Philippines is only starting out. You gotta remember, Films are economic weapons on how you show your country to the world. Why do you think Soju and bibimbap can now be bought in local stores than specialized ones cuz peps are exposed to Kdrama and kpop. Also, add to the fact that Japan benefited from its films too through merch and more (eg. Spirited away, your name, and anime in general). Thats why I dont think SRR is a good reference when the competition is the whole world. Thats why Eerie was broken done in this review, but it didnt fair well cuz he made points that was true and rational. You could see that the Director was either confused or got lazy. It says a lot when your first film is already being broken down so easily.
The only Netflix shows I've found creepy were the haunting series (by manor and hill house). They had good potential in the beginning but man...they love over explaining shit and making everything not scary before any major conflict
Bly Manor wasn't even that creepy in my opinion, I even watched it at night to boost up the horror element. But the plot was great! They weren't kidding when they said its more of a love story than a horror one 😂

Always a treat to watch you review a film in your signature breezy style (but without saying you're breeze which would negate the breezy). And you obviously do your homework on the films you cover. I think a lot of people here in the Philippines are scared of it is because some believe it to be kind of cursed. There are a lot of stories of bad things happening during and after watching it or at least give signs in the middle of watching to stop. A friend of mine tried to watch this in a movie theater twice, and both times it was stopped, the first was because of something going wrong with the projector and the second was because of an earthquake. After that he gave up and took the signs and just didn't go try to see it anymore.

Loool... Ok.. XD
Also the CR in the houses only has a toilet and a sink. Their bathrooms or shower rooms have a shower/bath or both, along with a toilet and a sink. I have never heard them calling their restroom a bathroom or restroom. Just CR. 10000% they know you're a foreigner if you asked for the restroom or bathroom. XD
Ooh different cultures! Spooky!
@@CapucineNighly Well tbh I never really understood why foreigners call it 'restroom' either, with the same reason that got you wondering. I mean, people don't go there to 'rest', do they? So that's why 'comfort room' made the most sense to me lol

I really love Seklusyon. Hope they can add it in Netflix.
I've seen Seklusyon at the cinema once and I've been wanting to watch it again since then 🥺 Been looking for it on Netflix all the time.
Also there’s lot of religion (mainly Christianity) and superstition in the Philippines, so this kind of horror works much better over there, whereas western audiences are mainly atheist so it isn’t really effective and feels very cliche to us
OMG YES SEKLUSYON !!!
My favorite is The Healing; I rate movies based on how paranoid they make me (so The Exorcist isn’t scary to me but Final Destination is) and The Healing, although the CGI is atrocious, made me paranoid about accepting things too good to be true. Also made me not trust albolaryo 100%.
Crap I remember the name of the movie now, and ngl I keep confusing the two, I mean female lead with Christianity theme and all.
Just call it found found footage

Yo yo. Actually Eerie was not originally a netflix movie. Managed to see it at theaters before it was released on netflix. But I was alone at the cinema when I watch this but I didn't get scared just one bit.
The Reason why I was all alone in the cinema:
- There was a power outage in our area and I was in the mall at that time.
