Hi Mike, as you would expect there have been a whole raft of youtubers jumping on the Studio One 7 launch but this is by far the best of the current bunch. More studio one content please. I've been a creative sauce subscriber for quite a while now, from the beginning of your cakewalk tutorials. But having lost patience with all of the Cakewalk/Roland/Gibson/Bandlab shenanigans i decided to switch to Studio One (mostly because your content was so helpful). As ever, excellent content delivered excellently. Many thanks!
Hi Mike, I have learned so much from you about Cakewalk, I have now got Studio One Pro 7 and am learning a lot now from you about Studio One. I would love to see more of the MIDI capabilities as they appear quite different from Cakewalk. Thank you for all you do for so many people out here lost and learning all this technology.
Very logical, straightforward video, Mike. As usual. Excellent organization. Clear and to the point. As for Studio One Pro 7, some of the new features are excellent. Global transpose, like Cubase? Lovely. It even lets you get a little picky about which tracks are affected. The stem separation is better than others I've heard, so I'm loving that. And the new tempo detection seems effective. I also like the rounded clips on the arranger and that loop feature they have, where you can just drag a clip and it'll automatically duplicate as you drag and swipe. Excellent. Worth the upgrade, imo.
The essentials/ functionality and visuals / smoothness has just been enhanced overall and it's those things that make it for me. Like Jazzy Jeff said, it really does feel like the tool gets out of your way and enables you to get to it. If they create summing extensions that rival or exceed UA LUNAs it would be a chefs kiss. I know they've ventured down that path with those mix channel processing effects but from what I've seen, the existing ones are not really cutting it.
Thanks as always, Mike ❤Really love your videos and tutorials. You've taught me so much... if you could do some tutorials on the new midi editing features in Studio One 7, that would be much appreciated 🎉 Keep it up!
Excellent content! You are a truely talented educator! I was about to decide upgrading from Studio One 4, and this video is right there to answer. Thank You! +1 SUBSCRIBER
Awesome overview as per usual. ty for your hard work and dedication to the education of current and future musicians/ producers/engineers. Between you and Joe Gilder, i have learned so much since moving from a stint on Ableton after using Cakewalk for years. Please keep the in depth tutorials coming. Personally, i'd love to see a tutorial on using Melodine to convert midi samples to audio and the transcription features. Learning how to generate scores and lead sheets is a fantastic tool set to have.
After working for 8 hours with the new Studio One Pro 7, (compared with the Studio One 6.4), i can say that by far the BIGGEST improvement, is the ergonomics and visibility ! HUGE difference, to help you see the various "events", and manipulate and arrange them much more easily. Even in the smallest view ( all view window) you can see and move events 500% more easily. So arrangement and composition is much more easy. Also , for those that they have and use splice , its much easier to incorporate a sample in your song. I have tried the rest of the features (global transport , launcher , impact edit view, tempo detection & stem separation) and i can say that although they are very useful , someone will use them from time to time and not always. From the above i found more useful the Impact edit view, which lets you put the kicks, snares, much more easily.
Perfect explanation as always, Mike! As an old Ableton user, the launcher will be very useful to me for sketching out new song ideas and arrangements. Looking forward to trying out the other new features too. I'll finally be upgrading from SO5Pro - well worth the $150.
Advanced tempo detection is my favourite new feature (although I love the other new features too) - I absolutely can't wait to start recording with this. I'll lay my guitar parts down and not worry about the tempo - sorted!
I totally agree! It was a clergy pia before and now I can just sit down and play guitar or piano and freelance with no worries about how this is going to end up. Absolutely wonderful
This "Scene" Features reminds me of the old days with Notator on my Atari. There it was called "Patterns" and they worked exactly the same (Without audio, only MIDI), You programmed patterns with different tracks (instruments), and then you arrange them as you want for making the song structure.
Thank you so much for the highlights review. I did not make the jump from 6 to 6.5 but with auto bus and a stem splitter along with analog track tempo match. This is a no-brainer upgrade with immersive audio. I guess fender buying out PreSonos has turned out to be a good thing. Thanks again for the TH-cam video.
My Favorite that I have been asking for, for over 2 years now... finally... EASY tempo mapping: extracting it from imported variable tempo audio files; setting it's tempo map as the project tempo map and easy to force other audio and midi tracks to follow that tempo map. This was a 3 step process in CWbB, but now SO7 can do it too, and in very few keystrokes.. no more 'guessing the BPM, then randomly checking of each few measures and relining them up to bar lines.. this is WAY easier.. KUDOS PreSonus, you finally satisfied my last and only Nit about this DAW. (Yes, you can use Melodyne, I have it, but I don't want to have to bring it up, each time with its seriously annoying tiny font icons and in menus and submenus and too small to read on a 1080p monitor (Celemony needs to get on the GUI DPI wagon with Melodyne like the rest of the industry is doing for all their plugins! .. just do it!). Great Job PreSonus.. Right On!!!
Can always count on you to do a great review of features and workflow. Thank you! Love to see more on Launcher! Would be great if we can record directly from our real-time playing of the pads..baxicaly routing the launcher outptut to a track of file. Bounceing a scene to a track would also be helpful. It is great to see S1 adding loop and launch functionality. Thanks for the drop
Great introduction video. I'm still on the fence as to whether or not I want to upgrade, but this was very helpful. I do a fair amount of MIDI and would appreciate you going into any new useful MIDI features. One feature I have figured somewhat of a clunky way to send CC codes to my MIDI instruments, if there are some easier ways, I'd be interested. I was a long time Cakewalk used and Cakewalk had a relatively easy way to send the appropriate CC's when I needed. Always enjoy your videos, keep them coming!
Hey Mike, myself & a few fellow producers have all worked with CWBBL and have also added Studio One 6, they and especially myself now feel lost & confused of how to use it! If you could make a video of how to do a song from start to finish, with how it would be in CWBBL/SONAR, like an detailed extension of the one you already made, with the new features too it would help no end!
Tempo Detection. I love it. Here's my question. I've got a tempo track created using the kick, snare, and high hat. Looks correct. All three of those show me the red Map so they are fine. What about the rest of the kit that I did not select for Tempo Detection? They are all Not Set. How should I handle getting them to follow the Tempo Track and stay in sync with the rest of the kit?
as a home recorder, primarly to record guitars and bass and using SD3 for drums... the S7 seems only to be useful for people who work with samples / midi . the only reason would be to update would be to able to make a backing track.
Mike, great video as always. As a Cakewalk user, I"m coming round to StudioONe more and more. Could you do a tutorial on the advanced features of the piano roll for midi editing for things like strings in orchestral writing. I saw you did one but it was part 1. We need part 2... 🙂 Again thank you very much for sharing all this info..
Great video, but dissapointed with this release. Seems mostly focussed on loop people using prefab or canned ingredients and less so on composers. This is probably the first major S1 update that I skip, also given the increased cost.
100% - Presonus decided to serve a sub-section of the user base and ignored the rest of us. If you use samples, synths and make electronica then it's fine, but I don't - I record live musicians and want deeper editing and workflow features, updated audio plugins. Shame, but maybe the next feature set will address that imbalance.
@@nickclube295 It would be so nice to have integrated track delay like every other DAW, redo the Redlight completely, and better automation. They can leave the Tricomp exactly how it is though.
Thank you for one more useful video! What I found not very useful was the launcher. Or at least it is not useful for musicians that do not use loops regularly.
I agree, that at first glance, for a musician like me (singer songwriter), it seems not useful. However, I have found it to be quite fun in terms of stimulating ideas - even if it's not used for final output. Thanks for watching!
@@CreativeSauce There are lots of people that do not make loop based music that have enjoyed ableton for coming up with ideas, for a long time. And I think the way presonus have implemented it feels better when combining arranger and launcher. But not as straightforward when in lancher only. What I would have liked every daw with a launcher interface have, is a separate launcher-arranger view, for dealing with the material that makes up the clips, so you can do multipli takes and use comping methods, and directly see the loop-points, and so on (instead of having to go to a specific clip and look at the inspector). Among many of the "haters", you find people saying that it isn't useful for real musicians, but it is actually a great tool for simulating jamming with other musicians, to crystallize ides. it is much more fluid and flexible, compared to working with loop-points on the arranger timeline.
Just got v.7.0. it has the one feature I wanted.. a faster way to set the Project/Song tempo map to follow an imported variable tempo Audio .. and force all other tracks to follow the new tempo map.. CWbB it was 3-4 steps.. now, SO 7 is 3-4 steps.. I guess I really helps to send feature requests to PreSonus.. I sent that to them over a year ago.. I'm glad.. Mike, I think I'm making the switch too..
Thank you so much for the great tutorials, Mike. On the Multi-out instrument busses you demo the feature using a drum plugin example. Is it possible for you to name the brand of the drums. I tried the feature using my EZdrummer 3 plugin, but without luck. I will also love to see some more midi editing tutorials. Maybe including the Harmony Wizard.
Thanks for this video, Mike. As a long time pro user, I was going to hold off on upgrading to V7, but some new features might tempt me now, such as global transpose, advanced tempo detection, stem separation, and several others. Yes, S1 is effectively a subscription now, but unlike many other subscriptions, if you decide to stop paying, you don't lose the ability to use the software. It sucks to pay $149 every year instead of every two years for the latest features, but I think it'll be worth it for me. There are cheaper DAW's that may be as good or better, but I like S1. If all I wanted to do was save money, I would switch to Apple Logic, which I bought with my new laptop a few years ago, but have never used. The upgrades are free, but they don't come that often. I plan to stick with S1. I like that I have the option to only pay the upgrade fee if there are at least a few features that I want. I think this incentivizes PreSonus to innovate, and not just with bullshit features that no one wants. Hopefully for PreSonus, enough people will find it worthwhile to pay every year or two to keep S1 as a viable product.
I like the multi out busses and the global transpose, those will be nice to work with. I was hoping for some more tools in the sampler, like shaper box, like Cubase 13 Pro now has, and an adjustable chord pad tool, like both Kontakt and Cubase has. But pricing is completely off, I can switch to Cubase on BF for about the same as the S1 upgrade costs, not very smart and a bit of a cold shower.
Hey Mike, good video, thank you for the effort mate. You always do a great job. What if I am not a beat maker? An EDM guy? Indie? Nor Dance music maker? From what I see S1 version 7 is moving towards that vibe? I never use loops and do not care a thing abut Splice. I am a Cinematic composer. I take it S1 didn’t make any changes for guys like me? My world is not coming to an end if not but just curious?
Great stuff! It's really a wonder why they didn't tout these features when they announced the new pricing structure, even a super fast "trailer-style" overview would have been enticing at the time. That being said, as a heavy virtual instrument user, I've always always wanted a global transpose function that could ignore the drums.
I think they knew that the new pricing structure would cause a lot of complaints so they decided to announce it ahead of time to get everyone’s complaining out of the way. That way, the pricing conversation wouldn’t distract from the new features. My guess, anyway
As Ableton user who keep amaze with what SO offer , the clip launcher and playlist really feels like home :) Are those features also have some kind of "FOLLOW ACTION " ?
I like Studio One a lot but my upgrade from 6 to 7 will cost me virtually the same as my recent crossgrade to Cubase Pro in their anniversary sale. Also, the new grid functionality is just a lite version of Live which, IMO, handles this type of track building much more efficiently. Hope this isn’t Presonus’ chosen strategic direction. If so, I’ll be moving to Cubase 100% of the time for scoring and Live for beat making.
What's the best way to move to a next version of Studio One? I ask myself this question with every upgrade, but now I'd appreciate proper expert advice.
I record acoustic guitars, vocals and a few VST instruments (bass and occasionally choirs, flutes etc). It does seem that the new features are aimed at the hip-hop and EDM creators. There might be a few improvements - the universal transpose could be one such but I don´t record lots of tracks so I don´t have a problem transposing accompaniments at the moment although this would mnake it slightly faster. The big improvements for me since I started in Studio One 3 Artist have been the arranger track, the chord track, the mastering facility and the lyric track. Not interested in surround sound so Atmos didn´t float my boat. I will end up with 7 simply because I have a subscription and I intend to convert to a permanent license when my subscription runs out so that works out well. Would I have paid to upgrade? No, for the reasons stated above.
Normally the upgrade would have been a no brainer, but as with the new model a 1 year counter starts ticking the moment you upgrade i have a lot of time to postpone it, until i see a feature i really like to get.
@@bassc for major upgrades and releases I guess it will stay as it is: if you buy the old version within three month before release you will get the upgrade for free. But as Presonus announced they want to go for faster and more release cycles maybe we won't see a version 8 in the near future anyway. Seems they are targeting for a continuous train you can jump on or off anytime.
Yes. If we add up the price of each version from the original purchase. Plus this one... Frankly it comes out to be much more expensive than for a new buyer in October 2024. This is a shameless scam on the part of Mr. Presonus. Does he need to buy a new yacht or even a loft in Central Park with our contribution of cash cows?
@@alaposte4386 since Fender bought Presonus, it’s the bottom line that counts. They don’t care about loyalty and individuals who have supported the platform from the beginning .
Question : Hi Mike. I cant seem to find any videos on how to launch Dep Flight One. I still have the old Presence XT version in the drop down that looks NOTHING like what I see the Studio One TH-camrs are using. I have Fully Upgraded to Studio One 7. I think. Help?
Major issues on PC with this version. I recommend sticking with previous versions until this one is stable. I think they launched this beta version and let us be the paying bug testers of their product.
Is there any sort of trial available? Some of these new features are really cool, but there are always some things that are easier in whatever I am using now. Global transpose, for when the track is almost done but I've written a melody out of my range. Advanced tempo detection, so i can build a track around the initial inspiration. And Scenes like Dr T in my Atari ST days...
Live looping is sth i was waiting fir since forever, but not sure that without a dedicated controller with FX control and clip launcher grid this competes with Ableton+Push - what do you think?
I'm a bit behind on things... can Send Channels feedback into themselves yet (ala Ableton), or is that still off the table? Asking to help make Dub-style Delay FX.
hmmm... I saw the playlists, it reminded me of Notator from the 90s. I hane Studio One 6 but I've gone back to Logic. I think its a desperate move by Presonus recently. I also don't want to place trust in them at the moment, I however have their ATOM SQ and find it a fantastic controller. But the latest upgrade path is a kick in the face as from Artist and Studio the patch is the same. I feel ripped of.
Does anyone know if studio one changes waveforms after adjustments such as compression or transient design without having to bounce out the track to see the new waveform??
Maybe I am missing something here. This is the third "how to" / Features of Studio One 7 I have watched and I am still unclear how the Advanced Tempo Detection is useful to a song. In the examples given, additional instrument recordings will be forced to "lock in" to a fluctuating midi drum track/tempo track? How is this helpful? I can see if this put the audio track in time with a fixed tempo and it then could be used as a scratch track for the rest of the recording, but to me this feature isn't useful. To automatically put the audio track (not recorded to a set tempo) to a specific tempo, I use Ableton to "WARP" the audio track (automatically) then output (with a click) to StudioOne 7 and presto! I align with the Studio One tempo / click rack and now I am ready to add the rest of the tracks with the original audio track aligned to the designated tempo for reference. (or perhaps to even leave in!) Set me straight if I have the purpose of this feature wrong. I'm just a drummer and may be missing the point.
Creative sauce : I have a question, why is my beat ducking the vocals playing loud in the KRK 5 monitor without any plugin on the beat ??? please if you could help
I wonder that as well... It does show the same kind of border around the clips when used with Atom, so it is possible they have used the same kind of script. But I would love to see full integration with APC64, as that is possibly hte best 3rd party launch controller at this point.
Just purchased studio one pro 7 had pro 6 and presonus quantum es4 before the purchase includes studio one pro + for 12 months can't get the studio one + to work it just keeps saying I've not got it anyone have same problem 😮
Best improvement are the GUI improvements! Studio One always looked pretty ugly, now with the rounded corners and such, it finally looks decent enough 😅 Other than that... the auto multi-output thing looks useful, though Logic had something like that for quite a while. New synth is of course also cool. Other than that... not relevant for me. Couldn't care less about the ai stem splitter, in particular.
Great walkthrough of the new features!

But pricing is completely off, I can switch to Cubase on BF for about the same as the S1 upgrade costs, not very smart and a bit of a cold shower.
dammit now i want to update
Hey Mike, good video, thank you for the effort mate. You always do a great job. What if I am not a beat maker? An EDM guy? Indie? Nor Dance music maker? From what I see S1 version 7 is moving towards that vibe? I never use loops and do not care a thing abut Splice. I am a Cinematic composer. I take it S1 didn’t make any changes for guys like me? My world is not coming to an end if not but just curious?
Thanks. Midi editing features please..Thanks.
Great stuff! It's really a wonder why they didn't tout these features when they announced the new pricing structure, even a super fast "trailer-style" overview would have been enticing at the time. That being said, as a heavy virtual instrument user, I've always always wanted a global transpose function that could ignore the drums.
Yes! Such a simple but useful thing!
I think they knew that the new pricing structure would cause a lot of complaints so they decided to announce it ahead of time to get everyone’s complaining out of the way. That way, the pricing conversation wouldn’t distract from the new features. My guess, anyway
Thanks Mike, I am interested in how Splice can be used with existing S1 loops etc, without needing to subscribe to Splice
As Ableton user who keep amaze with what SO offer , the clip launcher and playlist really feels like home :) Are those features also have some kind of "FOLLOW ACTION " ?
Many features are inspired by Ableton Live. Studio One is all in one DAW now.
Ty Mike!
Ah is that how it works, so if buy v7 six months in, I’d get first six months of v8?
@@bassc for major upgrades and releases I guess it will stay as it is: if you buy the old version within three month before release you will get the upgrade for free.
But as Presonus announced they want to go for faster and more release cycles maybe we won't see a version 8 in the near future anyway. Seems they are targeting for a continuous train you can jump on or off anytime.
@@MotorpsychoGER ah, Bitwig will give you exactly a year irrespective of big version releases, thought it might be like that.
Please cover live looping ! Thank you Sir!
Auto tempo mapping! Thank you!
It’s not that accurate. Manual tempo mapping is still the best
Enjoy!
Did they do anything with vocals productions
Great video Mike. Not a great update I must say. Will wait for more features before paying this for an update . Thank you
Would be nice if Studio One offer amp profiling own amps.
Hi Mike. It seems that the Launcher seems to duplicate what the scratch pad and arranger track accomplish.
Nope I won’t be upgrading so many features that I don’t need or want.
Yep, these upgrades should be available for say $50, then I would not be so pissed off with the newcomer price of $199.
Upgrade from 6.6 should not cost as much.
Agreed
@@CraigScottFrostI agree. Waves did a quick turnaround when they tried that subscription crap 😮😅
Yep, $149 for my upgrade vs $199 for completely new customer is verry annoying, although that is probably a time limited introductory price.
Please record a video about aligning WAV files in Studio One. How to do it in the best and most enjoyable way
Lancher is similar to the former ScreatchPad tool.
Midi editing tutorial please 🙂
I am a sound designer. Are there any videos strictly related to sound designing Using Studio Pro? You are an excellent trainer.
Can you drag the viewport around with the middle mouse button?
Nice!
Straight 🔥
Can use give me link to all your studio one tutorials. I am a beginner. Thanks
Are able to customize tempo and key on each scene? 6:40
Live looping is sth i was waiting fir since forever, but not sure that without a dedicated controller with FX control and clip launcher grid this competes with Ableton+Push - what do you think?
Is there a demo?
Is there a way to turn off the feature where stereo audio events look mono when they're condensed?
The only daw on the market that doesn't have stationary cursor / play in background in the year 2024 of the lord.. WTF..
Never understood any launchers. It's look like a double work to move events from arrangement to launcher and back. What is the point?
Sounds alot like an Ableton feature. (Launcher)
in section - 5 tempo detection. in this example would it still work if the drums were audio tracks and not midi?
you can tempo detect audio as well, the result may vary, and you should make sure to start the detection at the downbeat.
Creative sauce : I have a question, why is my beat ducking the vocals playing loud in the KRK 5 monitor without any plugin on the beat ??? please if you could help
Launcher seems to have no hardware integration with e.g. Launchpad or APC, just their own Atom, is that correct?
I wonder that as well... It does show the same kind of border around the clips when used with Atom, so it is possible they have used the same kind of script. But I would love to see full integration with APC64, as that is possibly hte best 3rd party launch controller at this point.
Most TH-camrs On Studio One 7
Pre-launch: What the actual bollicks! Son of a..
Post-launch: $200, yeah sure
Just purchased studio one pro 7 had pro 6 and presonus quantum es4 before the purchase includes studio one pro + for 12 months can't get the studio one + to work it just keeps saying I've not got it anyone have same problem 😮
Best improvement are the GUI improvements!
Studio One always looked pretty ugly, now with the rounded corners and such, it finally looks decent enough 😅
Other than that... the auto multi-output thing looks useful, though Logic had something like that for quite a while.
New synth is of course also cool.
Other than that... not relevant for me. Couldn't care less about the ai stem splitter, in particular.
