- In this HVAC Training Video, I Show How to Check the Refrigerant Charge using the Subcooling Method. Next I provide 3 Scenarios for Technicians to figure out the Actual Subcooling and if the Unit is Undercharged, Overcharged or Correctly Charged. I give the answers in the video and also go over the Total Superheat Method! Supervision is needed by a licensed HVACR Tech while performing tasks as Experience and Apprenticeship garners Wisdom and Safety.

@@acservicetechchannel I ordered your book btw. It’s on its way. Looking forward to learning . I Currently have my gas license but I am not registered for my ac apprenticeship. I have worked in the field though and have been looking at your TH-cam videos. It’s hard to find an employer willing to sign someone up. Do you have any advice ? I feel though with my experience and learning off of TH-cam, going back to school for an apprenticeship won’t seem as daunting.

Amazing video. Question. What if the outdoor unit doesn’t have the sub cooling data? Most of the Goodman units don’t have that data.

Can you empty a 410a tank into a system or is there always some left that needs to be recovered from every disposable tank?

That was fun. Nice job. Now, for the exceptions like R22 TXV on a R410a system (This has happened to me twice from factory new install AH) Also, detecting and diagnosing a mismatched split system (a Frankenstein system) would be a really cool advanced topic some time. It took me forever to finally figure out the TXV problems in the past, so it would be useful to know if I could have done it better than process of elimination. Wonky SH with SC could never check out stable. Thanks again!

So which is correct to use? Example 3: So I take it that superheat (16 degrees-high) vs sub-cooling (5 degrees-low) is at variance. This is confusing.

I noticed during the calculation at 3:07 when you had 20* of subcooling you had next to nothing for superheat. Does that mean you have too much liquid in your evap?
Just ordered the book, cards, and poster set so looking forward to studying some more. Just passed the EPA with 88/100 not great but only missed 1 on core and 2 on type 3. Looking to learn as much as possible so when I go for a job soon I get paid a little extra to start.

what if the unit isn't running due to a possible lp or hp pressure causing compressor and condenser fan to keep turning on and off
What if there is no target subcool noted on tag ?
If its a single stage compressor, you can use 11 degrees of subcooling as an average. Read our full free article on subcooling acservicetech.com

I have a problem. Can you solve
For a new techs remember sub cooling method works only for cooling coils with a thermostatic expansion valve will not work on piston coils you have to use superheat method that coil and also remember unit has to be in the Air condition mode
Why would the metering device, change the subcooling on the condenser?
That’s not correct subcooling never changes as long as the condenser coil is clean. The reason you can’t use superheat accurately with an expansion valve is because it varies depending upon the load so you’re super heat would change

I’ve heard that before also but I think it depends if it has an outdoor expansion valve don’t hold me to it lol
I guess that would be measuring total subcooling in case you have a long lineset, or a clogged filter drier that's rejecting some heat before it gets to the metering device. It's similar to measuring total superheat at the outdoor unit instead of right after the evaporator.
Edit: Sorry, a clogged filter drier would be the opposite and act like a mini metering device absorbing heat.

How come you don’t talk about the altitude?
You won't reach the correct subcooling or super heat with a clogged or starved evaporater right? Say someone never changed the air filter or bad liquid filter dryer
