Tecumseh Trail (Indiana) Backpacking and 'Tribute to Jaden' - October 2021

  • First, my old yellow lab Jaden in not dead! At 16-years old, he is getting really old, but he's still doing OK. (I've realized sometimes when I say 'tribute' or 'memorial' people suspect the worst, which I can understand.)
    As I contemplated a 2021 season-ending hike in October 2021, it dawned on me that Jaden might not have many (any) more backpacking trips in him, especially with the long Indiana winter upon as. I wasn't sure what kind of shape Jaden would be in as we got into the 2022 hiking season. So, I decided to use that October 2021 trip to make a video that combined the quick overnight hike on the Tecumseh Trail along with some 'flashback' clips of the many backpacking trips that Jaden and I have done together.
    At the time it seemed like a great idea, and relatively straightforward, but it turned out to be a rather epic video editing task which partially explains why it took me five months to complete the video (sorry about that!).
    All of the original videos I intended to include clips from were roughly one hour in length, but my plan was to include just a couple minutes of 'highlights' from each of the 20+ trip videos. That meant that I had to effectively 're-edit' each video entirely, a task that was pretty complicated and ended up taking a ton of time. But I feel the effort was worth it because the resulting video allows you to re-live Jaden's entire hiking 'career' in a relatively short and concise format. In addition, I've included some previously unseen photos of Jaden's puppy days along with a short video of Jaden meeting 8-week-old puppy Bailey for the very first time.
    Despite my best 'optimizing' efforts, the video turned out a bit longer than I was hoping for (1hr 18min) but I do feel that it flows quickly, and the viewing time goes by fast. However, I plan to publish a separate video with just the Tecumseh Trail hike (no Jaden flashbacks) as well as another video with only the Jaden flashbacks plus a still-picture slideshow (no trip video) for those wishing to view the two separate portions separately.
    So, with that, come along as Jaden, Bailey and I enjoy a late-season night out in the woods of Indiana as well as re-visit the hiking career of an exceptional trail dog and hiking companion.

    That clip of the night on Eagles nest really brought back some good memories. So happy to see this David video. I can't imagine any better tribute to a legend like Jaden. Very well done. I still say Jaden is the tuffest pup to set foot on trail. Hope to see you soon my friend.

    David I've been following about 10 yrs. The journey isn't just a trail. Its the things that go along with it -- My Chessie lived to be 15 and my Lab 16. They were in the middle of a lot of adventures. Unless you have dogs who are a part of what you do , you'll never know.............. We do , and life is better for it.

    I remember when I first found your Channel and was in awe. To see Jaden out there backpacking with you is always so cool and these pictures in the beginning of the video are making me laugh out loud lol. I’m thankful for you posting these videos and bringing us into your family. Stay strong jaden I’m glad to hear you’re alive and well. I had a mistaken memory once a year or so ago and thought that he passed away so seeing this video is bringing a smile to my face. Thank you David :)

    • @davidgrayin
      @davidgrayin  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, there is a lot 'going on' with Jaden's back legs when he walks. The muscles are so weak now that the back legs are almost like 'stilts' but he can still get a move on, and completes our daily 3-mile walks without too much trouble. I think the walks are what has kept him going these last few years.

      I will do that, Kevin. I'm hoping he still has a (short, local) hike or two left in him. He made it through the winter OK but he's just getting really 'shaky', on his back legs. I can't imagine doing some of these hikes without him, nor hitting the trails with just Bailey, but I have to recognize he doesn't have too many miles left in him. I'll give him an extra hug for you (and an extra piece of bacon which is even more special too him!).

      Yeah, I wish I could be doing it full time too. Not sure the body could hold up to that - knees are getting a little 'clicky' (arthritis). Biggest issue is probably the time away from family that it would require. But I'm trying to get more trips/videos in, and do some different sorts of things too (canoeing, overlanding, simple road trips).

    • @davidgrayin
      @davidgrayin  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, on that note (Sierra trip), I just got notification yesterday that I 'won' the permit lottery for a JMT thru-hike starting on September 4th. That's a great time to hike in the Sierra and almost the exact timing for the first hike I did there in 2015. Hmmm.... I put in for the permit as a 'backup plan' (I have a permit application in for Glacier for that timeframe too) but that is a heck of a backup plan. Might just do that Sierra hike in September this year (not sure I can do the whole thing, but you never know how it will play out).

      @@davidgrayin that would be EPIC! Was the lotto just for you or would you have a partner? I’m pretty sure you would meet many people on the trail but I don’t like the idea of doing it alone. Ever since I watched the one with you in Colorado when you fell and were freezing, I realized it’s much better to have a partner.

    • @davidgrayin
      @davidgrayin  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I didn't do a season preview video for 2022, and in fact I've only ever done the one in 2018. I found it added a bunch of pressure to go through with the initial 'plan' (preview video), which I guess can be a good or bad thing. Plus with all the permit uncertainty the last few years it's really tough to know exactly what I'm going to do... needed to make a reasonable preview video. But it does look to be a solid season of hikes and other 'adventures' in 2022. I'm heading out on a Great Smoky Mountains NP hike with Carl and Travis tomorrow, and then hoping to do a short section hike of the AT later in April followed by an 'overlanding' (back road travel via Jeep sort of vehicle) trip with Jeremy in late April. Then Dolly Sods with Travis in May, Glacier with the 2019 Yellowstone crew in late June/early July, something with my son, Christian, in Colorado in late July or early August, and then either Glacier again or the Sierra in September (I did win the permit lottery for a JMT thru-hike for early September). Whew... exhausted thinking about it all when I write it down!

    I totally understand dude
    And on that note another awesome video you sent our way
    Although I've never gotten a chance to get my dogs out on camping trips unfortunately
    I did however get the chance to have some decent walks down to the beach from my old house on 58th Street between Clark and store to Edgewater Beach back then it was not too bad you just don't walk the beach too early only because of the needles all over the place so we stay away from that and that was with Tasha now Skye I had her when I lived in North Royalton I took her from her parents because they were constantly traveling and bordering her constantly so I decided to take care of her which was a good deal she never got bordered ever again because she was with me and I was her third human parent the very first person did not take care of her at all she got very lucky that the other two of my mother's and father's friends took her in because she was quite abused before that and when she escaped from my parents' friends she got hit by a truck and she had trouble with her hips so when I took her we went on small walks very tiny things nothing that much just a little bit here a little bit there but when we would play ball ever so often she would slide and put her leg again
    Unfortunately she got so old she couldn't stand up and she started leaking pee as she would try to stand we had to put her down unfortunately I've had quite a few good dogs
