Just got in to turning as my dad passed away 1 month ago today and left me a large Jet lathe and a mini. Trying to soak up as much as I can so I can carry on his craft. My old man left me a gorgeous JET 18" x 40" and it's my pride and joy. I often worry that I'm going to lose it one day because of bills from being super sick myself. I keep the lathe sorta hidden, but I try and use it as much as I can lol.

Dale/Dh woodworking, warpage on the pecan green turn is going to be crazy. I don't go that thin with the rough cut, anchor seal and let it be for 6 weeks. I've never seen a green turn that thin made it.

Great video: I live too far North for pecan, too bad. I've done some Elm green turning, but it really warps when it dries. Always enjoy watching and it is a good refresher on basics in technique and proper tool usage. Thanks.

Hi Kent, Thanks for the informative video. The adjustment technique works if you mount between centers, however it was not as easy when I tried to use my woodworm screw. It was only accomplished because I wasn’t too far off. So I guess I’ll start trying the between centers method. Unlearn (or a least un-use) one method and learn a new one. Cheers, Tom

I notice this piece does not have any nubs or branches coming through it It is clear. My problem is dealing with the heavy chatter you get with you have an occlusion the you hit every time it comes around. It can really beat you up if you have a gnarled piece of wood. They are beautiful, but it is a fight to the finish.
Thanks Jeff. Great point. Put more force down into the tool rest and don't push in towards the turning. Glide across each pass with plenty of down pressure on the tool rest. All the best to you and Happy Turning!

I'm just starting out and have basically everything but a cole jaw, some jam chucks I'll probably fashion myself, a curved tool rest for inside the bowl, and any god forsaken skill with gouges. I have done my bowls start to finish with carbides.
There's nothing wrong with carbide. But if you get hooked on making bowls, try out a 1/2" bowl gouge for 2 or 3 bowls and see the difference. Happy Turning!

Kent. in the near future can you cover in detail this green bowl twice turned vs. green thin turned. I thought if we turn green it has to be thick and consistant thickness throughout. after turning we should apply a non cracking material, glue, paint or armor seal etc. and let sit without lots of air flow/ heat vents etc. like a garage. So you also say we can cut thin wet/green bowls. Won't they warp as well? Do we store differntly until dry, a teacher in a workshop said put a thin cut in a bag or pillow case for about 10 days and then sand and finish. But won't they warp. I feel like the 18-20 total bowls I"ve done are sort of wasted now except practice. I'm taking one of your paid classes now and enjoying the sharpening vid. But really getting hung up on this wet/dry/storage etc. Trying to cut down now on my wasted work. Thank you.

Hello Kent, great videos you have made. Question I have, I watched your video on finishing the bottom of your bowls and you say the flow from the sides to the bottom should be rounded, not flat. Most of the bowls I turn are segmented bowls and I finish with basically a flat bottom. Does your theory about finishing with a curved bottom apply to segmented bowls also? If so I would have to double the thickness of the base. Your thoughts ,thks

Hey Kent awesome video. Quick question. Is there anything else you use on the bark of live edge. I also like using the Tried and True Danish oil but I couldn't tell if that was also used on the bark. Just think on how well that bark is preserved for lack of better terms.
Good question Scott. No, oil is about it. Not much will penetrate bark. It is designed to be tough. Happy Turning!

I’d like to turn a live edged bowl but am concerned about the stability of the bark. Also when I turn I always have my hand or fingers touching the rest, but I noticed that your hands were often well away from the rest.

It still has some leftover mostiture how do you let it continue to dry without it craking or warping to much?

How would you go about drying this bowl after turning seeing that it is going to warp afterwards? I do not have a kiln or microwave(at least not one I can use to dry wood!)
It's thin and dried in about four days. No need to accelerate with a dryer, just let it sit. Happy Turning!
Great video as always! I have a question if you don't mind about sanding. You sanded a "wet" bowl here. Did you use regular sandpaper or mesh? (it looked like regular paper) I'm curious how it didn't clog up on you.
If you let the bowl sit for 20-30 minutes, the surface will dry enough that you can sand a good deal. Yes, regular sandpaper. Happy Turning!

Good question. The 5/8" is for roughing, or removing material quick and it leaves a more "coarse" surface. Once the bulk is cleared, I then move to the 1/2" which leaves a more refined surface. Happy Turning!

Can you tell me how you size your bowl gouges do you go by the flute size or the bar size in Britain we go by the size of the flute many thanks Bob
It should be flute, but sometimes different brands vary. Yes, a 1/2" gouge should have a 1/2" flute. However, sometimes a different company makes a 1/2" gouge with a 1/2" shaft and a 3/8" flute. Usually, the flute width, but you need to double check. Happy Turning!

Will a thick walls/bowl warp/crack more so than a thinner bowl?
Uneven walls are prone to cracking because moisture is leaving at different rates.
Have you tried vacuum stabilizing after rough turning , to minimize cracks?
No need, with even wall thickness, this will dry just fine. Happy Turning!

Another Great video Ken. 2 questions, your bottom feeder gouge is 65 degrees but looks almost like a spindle gouge since there are no wings. What am I missing? Also, have you found a 1/4” thickness for green wood eliminates the cracking?
The micro-bevel gouge is sharpened along the U of the flute shape without creating wings. Awesome bowl. After watching most of your videos i have learned so much. But i noticed that you use a dry grinder to sharpen your gouges, i use a tormek because it doesn't overheat, are there a reason you don't sharpen wet? Just wondering.
Once you get a gouge shaped the way you want it, re-sharpening it doesn't take long enough to cause enough heat build up to cause it to lose its temper. I use a low speed dry grinding system myself and haven't had a problem with significant heat buildup.

Yes, the oneway and CBN wheels are a no water system. You can cool the tip in water if needed, but if you're light on the touch and sharpen enough, you only are removing a very small amount when sharpening.

Thanks for your help. I had a lathe for many years collecting dust now I'm starting to make dust. I couldn't sharpen the chisels properly but I bought a slow grinder and the pro sharpening system.
Should have it in a few weeks. I don't know if the pro sharpening system is any good but was a lot cheaper than the wolverine.
How does beech turn? I scrounged up a few logs of green beech tree that im gonna trim up today
I'm not sure of your question. Beech should turn very similar. Have fun with it! Happy Turning!
That beech wood cut like butter. I had trouble with my spur chuck slipping and had to change it out but after that it went smooth. I've got the bowl wrapped up drying on my shelf.
How do you prevent cracks from happening when you use green wood?
Turn it all in one "sitting." Don't delay and turn the exterior, for example, then come back later and turn the interior. And make the wall thickness all the same throughout. Those are two biggies. Happy Turning!
So you have high and low spots so it’s not round as cut from the log??
Yes, it is round but longer than a normal bowl. If that makes sense.
How do you deal with the unfortunate tendency of green bowls to wobble on a flat surface after they dry?
See that tall foot? Mount a piece of sandpaper to a board and rub the foot side to side until it's flat. ;) Happy Turning!
