I know I can’t be the only one (along with the reporter) who shed tears at King Carter’s story. But you know what struck me as crazy throughout that? The dad didn’t tear up remembering/retelling it. Not because he didn’t want to, he’s just seen it too many times and being strong for his and his girl’s sake. God please help my help my people and also help them to help themselves. Damn broke my heart.

The amount of talent in the state of Florida is unbelievable. I sometimes imagine if there were only one university in Florida. Imagine if schools could only recruit in their state. Florida would be a powerhouse.

This could really be a 2 hour documentary. The football in Miami is like the gladiator games of ancient Rome. It is a distraction and amusement for a society that has lost it's way and is on the brink of the fall of an empire. It has embraced Bloodsport, believing that it is an extension of their own power. Inner-city Miami is a Trap game. "...Football, Music or something illegal" That is a true reality there. These football games are an outlet for youth, but as the game goes on, gansters, pimps and drug dealers are exchanging bets on the sidelines like it's a Mexican Gallo fight. These youth that don't make it to Florida State or the U end up in that Trap game. Hand to hands under street ligts, lookouts on porches and balconies and passengers in cars with pistols. The average NFL playing career is 3 1/2 years, and the average drug sentence in the Florida State Penitentiary is 3 years. Statistically speaking, Florida has the 3rd largest prison system in the U.S. and an 18 or 19 year old black male there is 9x more likely to be incarcerated than his white counterpart. That is alarming for any people/society and arguous for any place to endure. These are a remarkable people that try to survive there and football is an extension of that desire to be successful. But that dream is failing...

Our team was good, but they would bus us down to scrimmage in liberty city whenever we got cocky, and they would beat the everliving shit out of us. I'm glad our coach bussed us down there to learn that there are people far more hungry than us. Far more aggressive than us. It was a very teachable moment.

VICE, as a big fan of this series I hope to god you put your time into Rugby and the importance of it in the pacific islands. These small countries live off of almost nothing and yet breed one of the most ruthless athletes. Growing up in Samoa and having visited other countries like Tonga, Fiji and New Zealand (where rugby is certainly religion), I've witnessed and played against many young men that have outstanding backstories much similar to this. If you could do an episode in the Pacific Islands that would be much appreciated. Rugby is the only ticket out to most islanders and its something I think should be noticed on this channel considering the high quality its made in. Rugby is one heck of a contact sport and I'd love to see what you guys can give the audience.

Growing up as a kid, I was a 'Canes fan like many back then. Simply, they were the most dominant college team of that era and played with so much swagger. So much of their talent comes from their own backyards (in state) that I believe Miami and FL, in general, has sent more players to the pros than any other school/state. Til this day, I think that's still the case...just incredible. Side note - first guy they interviewed was Luther Campbell aka Uncle Luke aka Luke Skywalker from 2 Live Crew. A Miami icon that has a long history with the school and football in FL. He was a big supporter of athletics such as football as an outlet away from a bad life. Was supporting it then back in the 80's and it's cool to see him still doing it. Shows that the man cares about his community.

      1. in 2017 47% of NFL players came from Miami.
1b. the Florida State championship is between the feeder high schools from this program
1c. Miami City Commissioners and they Oscar winning Moonlight director, musicians, etc etc played in this league.
2.by High School all have the skills to be drafted to the nation's Colleges & Universities.
      3. Who did not make it out. go back as coaches to these children
      4. As you can see , even the 4 year olds are wearing "custom uniforms" which they will grow out in few months. THE PROGRAM HAS DEEP POCKETS (see #1)
but it shows you some people are just fixed in their mentality no matter what evidence is given.

Youth sports can be a wonderful complement to a child's development. The teamwork, physical fitness, and dedication that is required to be successful at sports all have great value as kids grow older. That being said, the odds of a kid getting a full-ride D1 scholarship are quite minute, and the odds of a kid eventually having a successful NFL career are nearly non-existent. With a focus on study and education, however, the odds of kids improving their lives are far more realistic and attainable. Putting aside the numerous potential pitfalls of serious youth football, it is my hope that these young people will translate their passion for the sport into their education.
If they are good enough, they might make the NFL, which would be of course be awesome. If they aren't good enough at football, however, perhaps they can achieve a good living in another career via their educational prowess. They can strive to live in a safer area, and their kids can enjoy those fruits; this more realistic aspiration met is a documentary I would also love to see.

@@damellman CTE is a real thing. Read the studies. At the same time, it is understandable why some parents in poverty-stricken areas are willing to take the risk with their children: The potential benefits are so massive.
So, CTE is a concern, but what is even more worrying to me is the idea that kids either get a football scholarship or end up dealing drugs. Education is the answer, and football should be peripheral to study...not the other way around. Considering the low probability of a kid ending up as a scholarship athlete (not to mention a professional one), ensuring they are academically prepared is the safer bet for their future.

@@jeffvanderwerf3561 so you're saying, Only poverty stricken areas are Are willing to take a risk with their children.. 🙄 Or are you saying cte is restricted just football...🙄 or Are you saying Footballs an Alternative to education 🤫... 1...b Cause last time I Checked they are called student athletes...Who are Ironically the most successful students in colleges and schools ... 2 football is an American sport which is played in every Social economic Class ... 3 . Most physical sports are subjected To the risk of CTE.. Basketball, Baseball, lacrosse, hockey ect. and especially the world's favorite game soccer... however. What you probably fail to understand is that education education in sports injuries has evolved.. Therefore techniques and protection and injury preventionIs more prevalent today..
