In response to your question Lorri - all you need is a domestic sewing machine that has the ability to drop the feed dogs so that they do not grip the fabric as you sew, plus a 'free motion' foot (or darning foot). Some domestic machines don't come with this foot but they are easy to buy. The little Janome machine I used for making this video was nothing fancy, and I did have to buy the extra foot.
That is beautiful! I was able to create some appliques/bookmarks using your tutorial, and will practice free motion sketching with this tutorial as well, building my skills and my confidence. Thank you for posting your videos. I am learning so much.

HI Lesley - thanks for your comments and questions - Most of the time (but not always) I work on 100% cotton that I have stabilised (using any of a variety of stabilisers available - I choose the one best suited to my needs at the time). Bobbin thread is either dedicated 'bobbin' thread or embroidery thread. Hello, there. I cant seem to get the right tension, ever. My upper thread always ends up tangled on the bottom of the design. It's a drag! How can I make it better? Love the video, btw. Thank you for shooting it.
Lilian, there are a number of things that could be causing this..I suggest you explore each one until you find the solution: 1) Machine incorrectly threaded; 2) dull or worn out (blunt) needle; 3) wrong type of needle, 4) poor quality thread, or top thread and bobbin thread not being compatible, 5) machine tension not calibrated correctly (machine may need servicing if this is the case), 6) stitching too slowly or too fast, resulting in skipped stitches. I know this is a long list, but any of these could be causing the problem. Hope this helps.
+97grad Hi and thank you for your comments! This was free motion stitched with just a regular free motion stitch- the settings are (usually) stitch width = 0 and stitch length = 0. On some machines you need to just take the stitch length as low as it will go, and stitch width can be often left as is. Generally though, try settings of 0 and 0 first.

Can I ask do you put anything under tour fabric? is it starch a lot it looked like it was staying flat as you moved it..as you can probably tell I am new to all of this and willing to learn :) Happy new year to you..
Hi Deb! Thanks for your lovely comments. This thread sketch has a piece of stabiliser underneath the fabric, which I find necessary to prevent puckering of the fabric. The stabiliser I used in this case was a lightweight fusible interfacing, as used by dressmakers. It's perfect for this type of thread sketching. Lightweight quilting stabiliser is ok if there isn't too much detail. Some of my thread sketches are done with stabiliser, and others with wadding and backing to create a quilt sandwich.
