Starfleet's rank system is based on the US Navy, where a Chief Warrant Officer, such as O'brien, outranks an Ensign, but a regular Warrant Officer or a Junior Warrant Officer takes orders from an Ensign. Warrant officers are recruited for their technical skills such as aircraft mechanics and other technicians, instead of being recruited from a regular officer academy.
It would have made a lot more sense to make Wesley an Acting Junior Warrant Officer, and stuff him down in engineering with Geordi.

    • @damenwhelan3236
      @damenwhelan3236 ปีที่แล้ว +3

But in starfleet Warrant Officers don't hold commission.
Picard is granting field commission to one Westly Crusher to act under minimum rank to operate on the bridge. And that's Ensign.
Obrien technically shouldn't be flying anything. But... they stopped observing protocols in later series.
Ds9 wasn't very good at observing basic protocols.

    1. A stranger comes aboard.
    2. Refuses to give his name.
    3. Wears non-descript clothes to blend in.
    4. Forms oddly close relationship with minor.
    5. Swears the minor to secrecy.
    6. ???
    7. To Catch a Predator special.

In a later episode Wesley uses one of Kosinski's theories to open a warp bubble that traps his mom in a alternate reality created by her mind.
Obviously Wesley was a big part of it but it was Kosinski's equation as well so apparently Kosinski isn't a complete fraud.

But he weirdly talks of Kosinski as if they never met him before

The thing about both Roddenberry and Lucas is that when they created the thing that made them legendary they weren't in complete creative control. They had to answer to others who had input on what they could and could not do. The look of the classic Storm Trooper was limited and influenced by what could be created cheaply with materials and techniques available for example rather than Lucas' unfettered imagination. You can see as the original trilogy went on Lucas got more control. He was in much more complete control for Return of the Jedi, and it shows. He was still limited by physical props and the people who had to make them and the money it cost to do so, so the results are more grounded than the prequels. Most people consider the Empire Strikes Back to be the best of the three, which is the one Lucas had the least input into. So by the same token Roddenberry had to listed a lot more to other people on his writing and such with the Original Series. By the time he was able to move on to The Next Generation he didn't really need to listen to the input of others as much and we see the results. As a species we tend to give too much credit to a singular individual in these situations instead of the dozens of other people who contributed to making it work.

As an Acting Ensign Wesley could theoretically outrank enlisted personnel like O'Brien, but most people we see (like Chief Engineer Argyle) are officers and would outrank him. Star trek never really used to have many enlisted members of the cast so like 90% of them are Officers.

So they come back from 30 million light years away, and then someone goes:
    -Where's Kazinsky?
-Oh no, we must have left him at the edge of the universe!
    ...paus...
    Everybody laughs and laughs.
Cut to black and theme song.

I'm sure you guys have already learned this, but one of the biggest issues the first season was so bad was also because Gene was drinking heavily. Apparently he had a bottle of whiskey in his desk drawer at work and was constantly tipsy or wasted.

      @NewbieStarTrek  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Oh I didn't know that! I mean, I knew they all drank heavily, but I didn't know it was affecting him in particular that way. The Martini lunch is still very popular in Hollywood.

For reference, an Ensign in the navy is the equivalent of a Junior Lieutenant in the army. That's a junior officer, and he would outrank every enlisted crewmember, like O'Brien later in DS9.

Humans are the creepy guy who doesn’t take the hint that the person he’s hitting on isn’t interested. We’ve sent unsolicited pics and our mix tape out into space, and we’re constantly spamming the galaxy with radio signals.

7 episodes in and Wesley has done exactly one bad thing, while under the influence of space drugs. He hasn't even been annoying. Hell, he's basically just been fully correct every time he does anything and nobody listens to him when they should. And any "annoying" behavior so far is literally just him being written as a child who doesn't quite understand adult social stuff yet. No idea why y'all hate Wesley so much from these 7 episodes alone.

They answered this question in a previous episode, we _have_ seen Wesley before, in a thousand different forms, on a thousand different shows. He's the blank slate character, the young hip kid the writers and censors throw in to make sure they don't lose that precious pre-teen demographic, and he always asks for clarification so the audience doesn't get 'lost in all the jargon.' He's the Robin from Batman; he's the Hobie from Baywatch; he's the baby from Dinosaurs. The Urkel, the Poochie. We didn't need to see him do anything before we realized he was just there to insult our collective intelligence.

Jazzy Waffles I hear you man. I'm a newbie to the series but I'm 10 episodes in so far and Wesley has been nothing but helpful, insightful, and eager to learn in every episode.
Even though I have only seen ten episodes so far, I LOVE this show. I love the characters and I have no hate for any of them, especially not Wesley.
I think some people are either depressed or have seen way too many TV shows and are jaded.

On a side note: Luke Skywalker was apparently a self-insert for George Lucas. Mark Hamil realized that whenever he had trouble doing a scene, he asked himself 'How would George react?' and did it exactly that way and George was always "Perfect, exactly how I wanted it."

    I'm a newbie as well.
I'm on season 1 episode 10 and I had no idea there was such a thing as "Wesley hate", which is not only dissapointing that people put hate into such a great show, but also very confusing because Wesley has been nothing but an interesting, insightful, and generally good natured character so far. He always wants to help and he often had very creative and thoughtful input.
Do people hate him because something I'm unaware of, or are they just hateful people?

He's a Warrant Officer, so basically a NCO above a NCO but not quite an officer. They're typically career guys. I was always under the impression that O'Brien enlisted as soon as he was able had been in Starfleet ever since, which was probably like 15-20 years by TNG.
