    Shad, having finished your book, I just want to tell you that your first novel doesn't read like a first novel. It was an amazing masterpiece of storytelling that was literally impossible to put down. Very few books make me lose sleep, but this book was absolutely brilliant, and I never thought of sleep until I finished it at 4 am this morning. I can't wait to see how you continue the series and I will gladly support you all the way. Writing is truly an amazing skill you possess. (P.S., you must've channeled to a ninth degree bond in storytelling to create this instant masterpiece. Much love from the U.S.

      I'm a good way into the book as well and and second this.

      @mxt mxt it can have a few good comparisons between the two, but even though they're similar genres, A Song of Ice and Fire has a much more political perspective and orientation. Shad has a bit of that in his novel, but I feel like it deals with fewer characters, but with a much greater depth. For instance, you could compare dayless the conqueror to king Robert. Both started off leading a revolution and ultimately ruling, and they both come to realize that things weren't quite as noble as they assumed. But aside from that it's night and day. King Robert says he regrets becoming king, but continues to live exactly as he has been. After his defeat, Daylen is constantly tormented by his past actions after realizing the monster he'd become. That's a simple version of what comparison I make, but of course plenty will think differently. I think it comes down to preference honestly. I think I like Shadow of the Conqueror better because it's dealing with the constant feelings of an old tyrant coming to grips with how terrible he is, even in day to day dealings with people

    Random thoughts:
    1. Sunforged sword breaker might finally catch swords effectively?
    2. I see your sunforged phallic symbol and raise you a sunforged personal massager! Yes, I am the most beloved puckish rogue in all the lands.
    3. Sunforged balsa wood armor? Would it retain its impact-absorbing softness or would the indestructibility mean it becomes crystalline hard?
    4. Sunforged boots. Finally we can fantasy-story plod across continents on foot in comfort to toss that infernal ring into a volcano without grimacing every time we step in a puddle because our soles wore down to holed nubs half a continent ago. Huzzah! (Might be especially useful for thieves and assassins to sneaky sneaky about too.)
    5. The sunforged codpiece. Because safety matters.
    6. The sunforged spectacles. What devious wonders might we see? X-ray specs for real? Zoom lenses? Night vision? See through time to your own impending demise?
    7. My personal favorite description of a Vorpal Blade comes from Roger Zelazny and is made of ... moth wings? Ah the joys of magic in a good Alice hallucinogenic fantasy. But ah, what a sharp cutter.
    8. Speaking of useful sword enchantments: electricity. "Don't tase me, bro!" (Baddies, always wear your gambeson.)
    9. Another fave enchantment: any throwing weapon of "Returning". Infinite weapon throws? Suck it, Gambit. I see your game of 52 card pickup and raise you INFINITY!
    10. And last, but not least, speaking of useful "magic" weapons: the Sick Stick. *Blech!* And lo, were the knights of the battlefield laid to waste, unable to fight back, unable to breathe, and often slipping to their ignominious disgrace upon the growing pool of putrescence. One angry girl was "sick" of all their fighting.

      That does bring up an interesting question I have:
      Shad says the sunforging process enhances the properties that the item was designed for, such as cutting for a sword or force application for a hammer. Does the magic intrinsically understand that, or does the sunsmith have to consciously think about what the item is for during the magic imbuing process? Like boots are meant to be sturdy and protective footwear, but what if I want the most comfortable boots that will never allow foot fatigue or blisters, no matter how far the wearer walks? Do I have to think about that while sunforging them, or do I have to construct them with comfort in mind beforehand to get that property?

      It wouldn't to anything, unless it had a pommel. Pommels are the most dangerous part of a sword. they are the most dangerous weapon in the world. Do not be mistaken, the United States dropped pommels on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, and never had nuclear weapons, but instead a stockpile of 14th and 15th century sword pommels. The Soviet Union spent time and money investing in far inferior nuclear weapons over the course of fifty years as the US and Western European countries had gathered up all the pommels during WWII and the early post-war period.

Instead of cauterizing the wounds, a light saber in real life would shred the flesh it touches from vaporizing the water, causing much more severe bleeding than a regular sword. • @lierdakil
    @lierdakil 5 ปีที่แล้ว +253

    One reason you don't really want your sword being _too_ light is momentum. Blocking and parrying with a very light sword is measurably harder. Especially if it's also long. So trying to parry a metal sword with a paper one? Well, good luck with that. For the sake of argument, assume both have "indestructible" enhancement. At the very least, parrying with an extremely hard feather-weight sword will be very hard on your wrists, which would have to basically take the full brunt of the strike you're blocking/parrying. Cutting and chopping also becomes way less effective if the sword is very light-weight, since it will stop very easily the moment it encounters resistance (you'd have to actively push the sword though, like you would a knife). And against good heavy armour, a lightweight sword is nearly useless.
    Another reason is training. Most enchanted weapons in fantasy are prohibitively expensive. So, when you're an aspiring adventurer who, after a few months/years/decades of training with and using a steel sword, finally got enough money to get an enchanted one, you wouldn't really want to have it be all out of whack compared to your trusty steel sword, would you? Granted, getting re-trained to use your new very light, longer one-handed sword with very different balance more effectively, might give you an advantage in combat. But that could take _a while._ So you might go instead for an enchanted sword that has similar length, weight and balance to what you usually use, but is just better (edge retention, sharpness, cutting, chopping, stabbing effectiveness, etc)

It's hard, but brittle, so on its own it's best in a bulky object like a mace or flail tip - but it's lightweight, so the mass of a blunt weapon isn't there. A titanium steel alloy, however, can be more flexible, meaning you can strike an edge on something hard with less worry it's going to crack or chip. Also, it means you have a bit of flex when you bend your blade, instead of snapping it in two when you push too hard sideways.

If it was just that the weapon is always on fire, then yes putting it on something like a whip would be more useful then a sword. But if the fire enchantment caused the target to burst into flames, then it would be effective on any weapon. Imagine a sword with such an enchantment could only be blocked by a shield once, then the shield would combust and now you're likely no longer facing an opponent with a shield.

    In theory, a weapon being longer and lighter does convey an advantage in terms of reach and speed. But there is a massive caveat. You really wouldn’t be able to fight someone with a normal sword unless you were supernaturally strong.
    This is because of the way swords behave in the bind when you actually fight with them. Essentially, they are similar to big levers, and if your blade were that much lighter than your opponent’s you would need to be many times stronger than him to hold your own when your blades were foible to foible. It is easy to see that this is the case by trying to spar using a wooden waster against someone with a blunt steel longsword. The heavier steel provides more presence in the bind, and the lighter wooden sword cannot effectively compete. The lack of weight would also make cuts more difficult (though the incredibly narrow edge may help to offset this, depending on what is being cut).
    During the Napoleonic Wars, British Flank Company Officers (i.e. Officers who might be expected to actually fight hand to hand rather than simply direct fire and maneuver) were issued sabres (heavier with more blade presence) rather than spadroons or smallswords (the epitome of light swords historically speaking) commonly used by other infantry officers. The reason for this was not that smallswords breaking in battle was a big problem - it didn’t need to be. The smallsword simply didn’t have enough blade presence to block clubbed muskets, cavalry sabre blows, etc.
    All design is tradeoffs - you could theoretically make a sword much much heavier, and that would give it an advantage in the leverage of the bind but it would also make it significantly slower and more tiring to use. You could make a longsword with a skinny blade like a transitional rapier - I guarantee it will be lighter than most other longswords, but it will be at a perpetual disadvantage in the bind.
    There is a reason historical swords were the weight that they were, it was not only a limitation of metallurgy and material science. So long as you might have to fight people with normal swords, or god forbid, pollaxes or halberds, I do not think a sword that much lighter would be a significant advantage - rather, it might get you killed.
    On the other hand, that material would make great armor.

    • @KosherCookery
      @KosherCookery 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@leightonshelley I don't think so. It has some protrusions, but not much outside what could be found on early modern complex hilts. Generally, weight near the hilt won't make much of a difference when you're foible-to-foible. It would help foible-to-forte, but you'd have to be fighting someone with an exceptionally heavy weapon for that to matter, the mechanical advantage in favor of the forte is already enormous.

    I occurs to me that fire enchantments would be very useful, not for attacking people so much but as both a simple light source and for, well, setting things on fire. So raiders would likely love flaming swords.
    Secondly, that weight enchantment on your superhero's sword would be down right deadly if the effect also occured when attacking; that is to say, that while it feels its normal weight when being held by its user, the sword *strikes* with the force it would have as though it weighed the ton it feels to others.
    Force = Mass x Acceleration after all. You swing the sword as though it weighed only (say) 100kg, but strike with the effective weight of a 1000kg sword? That's a lot of damage. Hell, that's anime levels of damage.
    Finally, can I just congratulate you on turning the the old 'Wooden Katanas Are Even Better' trope from a joke into an actual logical argument? Because you make a really solid point. Especially if your magic relies on runes like so many magic enchantment systems often do. It is, after all, much easier to carve runes into wood than trying to carve them into steel, or trying to make the runes while it is being forged or something.

      My character's unusual in that she's alright by Skyrim PC standards, and she doesn't use weapons at all. She just uses her magic and that's about it, so my Two Handed is at about 19 from the few times I've used Bound Battleaxe for a sneak attack. *EDIT:* Nevermind, her housecarl Lydia was slain in battle, so to make that sacrifice worth it she joined the Companions and built an entire set of (enchanted) Dwarven armour. She's using that for the time being with the Warrior Stone, and her Heavy Armor, Blocking and One-Handed skills are all at least at 30 now.

    I wonder how many times the craftsman accidentally broke the prototypes of IMPERIOUS before he could sunforge it because it was made out of wood and was super thin and long. I meen before ist was made nearly indestructible by sunforging it, it must have been super fragile and so transporting it must have been a pain in the ass.

    • @kin2naruto
      @kin2naruto 5 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      Not really, you'd shave off the sword shape with a plane. (Like using a cheese slicer) Carve the top half with one blade, then the bottom half with another. Wet the wood so it is flexible (wet paint/dye would do the trick), then lay it in a special mold so it is perfectly flat when you do the enchantment.
      Making the tools would be the hard part. The actual sword could be mass-produced in minutes. After that, it would simply depend on how long it took to do the enchantment and how magically expensive each enchant is.

    why wood though? I'd just make a sun forged blade out of aluminum foil, thin glass or ceramic.
    edit: any crystalline material would have the most fine edge because of its molecular structure.

    • @EvelynNdenial
      @EvelynNdenial 5 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      absolutely glass. you could make an incredibly thin glass rod and oh so carefully sharpen the edges. it would cut through anything and if you went up against an opponent with enchanted armor you could poke straight through the links of the chainmail underneath and just wiggle the blade shredding his insides. and since it was made specifically to stab into the gaps in armor the enchantment would make it easier.

    • @EvelynNdenial
      @EvelynNdenial 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Pef it would be great for stabbing but blades need their edges to be only a few microns across to be considered razor sharp. you need a very hard material to get that kind of edge. sharpening the glass wouldn't get you the sharpest edge on second thought but scoring and making a clean chip of a glass blade would make the sharpest possible edge you could get.

      Maybe the book has a in-world reason? Like, if it was a futuristic style world with advanced
      Sci-Fy tech and stuff then I could see wood being more of a Status symbol. Taking into account of course that the world is covered in metal and stone super structures.
      Wood could just be a wealth thing. Then again, it may also be a weight thing. Foil and Glass may just have too wonky of a weight to it, whereas wood sits just right.

      Glass or obsidian would be great, but they couldn't really make super straight, large pieces of glass with medieval technology. That's a modern thing. That's why it was all broken up stained glass, and only in very important places. And obviously, aluminum foil didn't exist.
