An Uncommon Remembrance of Chuck Yeager

  • I did this video through the lens of his friendship with Jackie because it's something a lot of people don't know, and also that's how I can show you pictures of him topless sighting her runs or in the pool at her house. There are plenty of books telling the same stories about his flights if you'd rather read that, including my own Breaking the Chains of Gravity. I didn't want to retell the same stories you all already know. I wanted to do something different: his own remembrance of a close friend.
If you want a standard pilot story about his Mach 1 flight, here: • Ego vs. Ego: The Race ...
And another one about the X-1A flight: • Yeager's Wild Ride in ...

I remember the story in his autobiography about meeting a Soviet pilot at an embassy party. They had a captured MiG that Chuck had made test flights in. He complained to the Soviet pilot that the plane had been nearly impossible to control in a dive. The Soviet said, What!? You dove it? You were supposed to eject if it went into a power dive. We don’t ever dive it.
My God keep you in heaven. We’ve lost a true great hero.

In Yeager's autobiography, he describes taking a trip to the Soviet Union with Jackie, for some international aviation event, and on the way back "accidentally" flying over some Soviet air bases to take some pictures.

I was lucky to meet him as a teenager back in 1987. I had been reading and rereading his autobiography, "Yeager", for about two years beforehand. We had just returned to Montgomery, AL, after two years in Seoul, Korea, where my father was an Army officer at the U.S. garrison at Yongsan. I had also been a student pilot for two years at that point, and had gotten my first solo at the USAF MWR aero club at Osan AB.
I was at Maxwell AFB that morning; the annual Gathering of Eagles was just starting up, and a couple of P-51s made up in "Glamorous Glennis" and "Old Crow" paint schemes were on the ramp, where GEN Yeager and GEN Anderson were due to come out and fly later. Taking a break from ground school, I wandered out to the ramp with Mom in tow to go ogle the Mustangs. We were about halfway to the airplanes when Mom said, "hey son...look behind you."
And there he was, surrounded by the usual coterie of USAF officers and GEN Anderson, all just generally shooting the breeze. Mom approached him and asked if he would be willing to sign an autograph. As you might expect, I was pretty much dumbstruck...I think I mumbled something like "Gosh sir, it's really great to see you!" He just smiled and shook my hand, then he and Bud went out and flew the Mustangs for a photo run over Maxwell.
Sadly, with the passage of the years, my parents' divorce, and my own somewhat nomadic lifestyle, the piece of paper with the autograph has disappeared. But I'll certainly never forget that day.

Another top notch video. Being a space nerd myself, I really enjoy this channel.
When it comes to people like Brigadier General Yeager, a quote from General George Patton comes to mind.
"We should not mourn the passing of such men but rather thank God that such men have lived."
To talk about Yeager is to drain the dictionary of superlatives. A man's man and a true legend.
As for Jackie Cochran, she was a top-notch pilot. Period. A role model for many young women who came behind her. Like Yeager and other pioneers, she is a genuine legend and trailblazer.

I had pretty much read everything in my middle school library about Chuck Yeager and failed to realize he was standing right next to me. My dad knew from the instant who it was and my dad said hello to him after the presentation. I shook his hand but was in such shock I was speechless. I literally could not form words.

After reading General Yeager's books, you can't help but marvel at what a fantastic ride this man's life was! He had a high opinion of himself, and didn't suffer fools gladly. You had to earn his trust, and if you failed to meet his expectations you were done. Violent death was a constant feature in his life, far beyond what most people ever have to endure, yet he carried on. I never met Chuck, but I did attend several evening programs at Airventure Oshkosh were he spoke about his experiences. He was not a politician, he was blunt and opinionated, he was one of a kind.

I normally love Amy's videos, but this one feels a bit like a bait-and-switch to me. Only Chuck Yeager's name is in the title and only his image is highlighted in the thumbnail (with Jackie's image largely covered over), yet the video was 95% focused on Jackie Cochran. A better video title would have been "Jackie Cochran and Chuck Yeager: An Uncommon Friendship" or something similar. By not including Jackie's name in the title (or her image prominently in the thumbnail), it disregards the interest in Jackie's life that many of us aviation enthusiasts have... as if to say that people will only listen to her story if they are tricked into doing so. It perpetuates the idea that Jackie's story needs to be told in the shadow of a man (or the men) she knew. And that only serves to diminish her legacy, in my opinion... certainly not something that Amy likely intended to do. Jackie's history was important enough that it should stand on its own merit.

In 1984 I had just finished Navy boot camp and was training at NAS North Island. There was an air show at NAS Miramar that I attended. I was on a platform looking into the cockpit of the F-20 Tigershark. As I came down the stairs I bumped into a man almost knocking him down. I caught him, it was Chuck Yeager. I stammered "Sorry General Yeager." He said "No problem." We talked for a few minutes and he asked where I was from and I said "Butler Pennsylvania about 30 miles North of Pittsburgh." "Hell I know where Butler is, I'm from West Virginia." About that time another man came up and General Yeager introduced me to Bob Hoover. Here I was an 18 year old E-1 in the Navy talking to two Air Force legends. It didn't get better than that.

I had several conversations on how to deal with different "PROBLEMS" with aircraft and he explained that he would go over as many situaltions as he could before flying and he always had a plan B or C or D. He had said that he was not PASSIONATE about flying or airplanes, it was his job and he was very good at it and seemed to have a feel for how far he could push an airplane without breaking it and most Pilots that went past that DIED. The knowledge I got from listening to him saved my life during an short field engine out at 200 feet over a trailer park, "fly the airplane until it stops sliding" Same thing Bob Hoovers said, but Bob advised Fly it to the end off the crash and don't hit nuthun with the POINTY end and you'll be OK (he was right). Yeager always though Hoover was the best STICK in the world, and Hoover had the PASSION. Like most men of that caliber he could be a bit of an ASS sometimes, but he had earned that right. He was certainly one of a kind, and they don't make them like that anymore.

An uncommon remembrance indeed... and a wonderful one! Thank you for sharing this perspective, Amy! Most of us hear way too little about Jackie, and I really dig how you did this video... because it really sort of is about Chuck in a way that... we don't commonly hear about.
    Thank you! Good work!

A friend and family member of mine who is also a pioneering female pilot told me a story, she always chuckled about, of Chuck doing a ground loop not too many years ago at an airport in extreme North Georgia. She summed it up by saying, "I've gone in and out of there a lot of times, but I've never done a ground loop in my life!" I suppose Chuck Yeager was and still is the mark so many pilots judge themselves against; however, for the present, I'd say few even came close!

I never met General Yeager, but when I was about 16 I did get to speak with his wife, Glennis. It was a very pleasant conversation. Imagine my surprise when about a month later I received an autographed photo of him in front of an F-20! I don't even remember giving her my mailing information.

Interesting video - glad you made it.
As for the 'wrong title' complaints - this is TH-cam, someone titling a video to get people to view it, rather than giving it a boringly accurate title is hardly new! Plus this documented aspects of Chuck's life and gave an insight into his character that you're unlikely to find in any other record - so, for that alone, it's worth a watch.

I'm a contractor on Edwards AFB and a lot of my co-workers were fortunate enough to meet Chuck Yeager. I never did. He'd attend the air shows on base frequently. Unfortunately this last show (typical 2020) was a "Virtual Air Show" and I was unable to meet him, even though I was on shift that day.

You should read about Poncho Barnes, a much better flier, all without men doing anything for her. Oh she really disliked Jackie, feeling jackie had too much backing from famous or wealthy men.
This doesn't seem much about Chuck Yeager either. He knew both women pretty well. RIP Chuck..

I just noticed your photo of the X-15 autographed by Joe Engle! That's awesome! I wasn't paying much attention to it at first and just saw the cockpit and subconsciously thought it was an A-12 flying under a B-52. (In retrospect, I should've realized it was an X-15 _because_ it was positioned below a B-52 wing.) But then I saw the autograph, and even though I can't make out all the detail in the video, I immediately recognized it -- because I have an autographed photo of him in his astronaut suit! I got it when I was very young, and I actually don't remember the exact circumstances -- I think it was a brief meet-and-greet after a presentation he gave in a nearby city, but I'm extremely foggy on that and may be confusing it with some other event.
Great history and stories about Chuck and Jackie, and great photos. Chuck was apparently my uncle's squadron commander for a time. Chuck certainly did a lot of amazing things in his life.

I am interested in why Yeager bristled so much at the inclusion of Ed Dwight in the astronaut program and what seemed his determination that Dwight would never fly. Dwight seemed a fine pilot, perhaps not enough of a good old boy, but remember that it was an "experiment" to let the Tuskegee airmen fly planes because many in the air force brass doubted they were mentally capable of flying planes! So the idea that Dwight wasn't qualified because he didn't have the level of experience of the others when he was denied those opportunities seems unrealistic. General Yeager found himself in a no win situation and punted. The man never had problems taking risks, making tough decisions as a pilot and his courage should be honored, but when it came to women or African Americans in flight he was unwilling to take those risks.

Thank you for posting this historic accounting of Chuck. I hadn't heard all these (to me new) very cool facts about him. While watching your video I couldn't but help remembering my first of two meetings with Mr. Yeager myself. I was an early teenager perhaps 12 or 13 around the bi-centennial year living on NAS Pensacola (my dad was a member of the Blue Angels) and I used to go look around at the Museum (being built) historic planes being kept back outside in the grass (then). While looking at a tiny poorly painted red (weather preserved) plane sitting right on the ground with the grass growing up around it (x-1) a older man had been following me & my friend around and while we were laughing and cracking jokes about the funny little plane, he started telling me about the history of the plane and what it did. I have to admit he had my attention and told some cool stories and seemed to know a lot about the pilot who flew the funny little red plane. He asked me a couple questions which led me to telling him about what my dad did in the Blues and when I left he wanted me to tell my dad that he said hi. (I still didn't put two and two together at that point) until when I told my dad that some man following us around telling me about planes, said tell your dad that Chuck Yeager says hi. {True Story} Amy, I like looking thru your past videos. Thanx Thom...

Good if you to make us all remember this story. I read Yeager’s book when I was 15 and had forgotten this chapter of his life. She was a force of nature and certainly a rare person who could rise above Chuck’s sizable ego with one maybe even a bit bigger of her own. Do they even make people like them anymore? The Greatest Generation indeed.

being a private pilot, my child was going to be named Mitchell (after Billy Mitchell) or Jacqueline but my wife wanted Amelia instead...
when it comes to Chuck. ive met him twice. way way WAY not impressed. once was at the Beale AFB Hospital when he was raising cain because his prescriptions werent #1 priority and he was acting everybit the ass. the 2nd time at the base commissary when he was dressing down a dependent child who was "employed" as a bagger. i gave it right back to him and he took offense that i was interrupting his beratting of a minor for some perceived slight....
yeah, he accomplished a lot as a pilot but seeing him when he wasnt in the spotlight, showed me everything i needed to know about the person...
great video though! always fully researched and full of enthusiasm!

While I was stationed at RAF Bentwaters in 1987, Chuck Yeager paid the base a visit. My roommate worked at one of the fighter squadrons, and got to meet Yeager. He asked my roommate, then an Airman 1st Class, "They tell me you want to fly."
    "Yes, sir, General."
"Don't worry, son, if they let me fly, they'll let anyone fly."
    Quite a day.

That aside Chuck was one of our real heros in the 50's
My father was in the aerospace field and the ONLY guy we looked up to higher than Chuck, was Col. John Stapp. Anyone who did what he did...forget the rocket sled, his high alt. jumps....forget it, he deserved every medal in the book...

This is so cool. They never taught us this in school. A pity too as there is so much to learn from the mem and women who shaped the future that we live now in the present. I grew up near Beale Air Force Base and we learned a lot about Chuck Yeager in school. I remember him coming to the school one time in the early 80s. The whole school gathered in the "cafegymatorium" to hear him speak. It would have been real cool to hear her speak as well.

Chuck Yeager's autobiography that was published many years ago was an enjoyable read by me.
A lasting impression from his aviation career: The man must of have had a guardian angel; and that was years prior to breaking the sound barrier; or even from his World War II survival after being shot down in air combat.
When he was temporarily stationed in the Eastern part of the US during WW II, he would borrow an aircraft to fly out west to see his sweetheart on weekends, where Yeager recounted in his autobiography that due to exhaustion he'd fall asleep during flight, whereupon awaking, he would notice he put his aircraft into a circular pattern somewhere over the Midwest. Other times he'd share a multi-engine aircraft like a C-47 with another aviator to do the same east to west flight; where they'd set the plane on auto-pilot to catch some Zzz's; only to awaken to see them approaching a box canyon, whereupon they had to get control of the aircraft to avoid a crash.
Anyone else that would have fallen asleep at the controls during flight would have rarely lived to tell about it, yet, Yeager managed to do so on more than one occasion.
