Aparently one of the most difficult plastics to recycle are shampoo and shower bottles... they usually have layers of different plastics because of fragrance etc. so can't be recycled as a mono-material.
Also, there are now technologies creating crude oil from plastic that was up until now not recyclable - basically creating almost a closed cycle.

An area I've been experimenting with reducing my plastic usage in is bath related things like face washes, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, etc. Very related to your non-perishable point and similar to laundry as they are all different types of surfactants.
CeraVe has a nice syndet bar (or Dove's beauty bars that come in fragrance free) that I was able to replace my face and body wash with.
Lush also has many solid versions of these types of things but I prefer fragrance free so I have moved away from them but am still finishing up a solid shampoo that has worked fine for me. Their solid conditioners weren't my favorite but I've been enjoying HiBAR's orange solid conditioner.
As for moisturizer, I haven't found any solid versions I trust so I keep trusty CeraVe or Aveeno for that.
It's difficult to compare prices since gels vs bars last super different times but for me, the bars last so long (to the point where I'm annoyed and just want to move on to a new bar to try it out but stick with it to the end) so I imagine the costs aren't super different.
I believe they are actually better for the environment instead of the fake good since there's little to no plastic and most of the water is added during use instead of beforehand with shower gels so a lot of weight is removed for shipping. Target has both HiBAR and CeraVe so you could get both at a local store instead of having it shipped to the house.
Edit: Oh yeah, and there are toothpaste tabs that are actually fluoridated now but I haven't tried any out. Plus they seem less worth it environmentally since most US brands are still in a plastic bottle and only a German brand that I've been able to find has had paper packaging so I imagine the CO2 used to transport that cuts into the savings, if not making an overall worse difference. Figured it was worth mentioning though.

Girl I gotchu! Here are some things you might be able to swap:
    - Any body care (lotion, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, etc). I like the company Ethique for most solid products.
    - Personal hygiene like floss, toothpaste, mouthwash, etc. David’s toothpaste is the best. No fluoride but I drink tap water so it’s nbd.
    - Kitchen things like dish soap, sponges, paper towels, napkins, cleaning products, etc. Check out Earthhero for a bunch of different options and try reusable towels and things for the paper products.
    - Period products like tampons, pads, etc. I personally like a menstrual cup (mine is the Lunette) but there are lots of other options.
    - Toilet paper. I have an omigo bidet and use some washcloths from the thrift store as reusable “toilet paper” to dry off with)
    - Office supplies like notebooks, pens, paper, sticky notes, etc. Earthhero has good options for these too. After I run out of my stash of old office supplies I’ll be getting a refillable pen. But they are so many office supplies to buy used at thrift stores!
There are a million more things but this is a good place to start. As a general rule I think to myself how can I dispose of this when I’m done using it? If I can’t think of a sustainable way to dispose of it then I find a better swap. :)

I'm glad you did the financial breakdown because I just saw the ad and checked it out on Amazon. At roughly 17 bucks a box, it's twice what we pay for Cheer 64 wash loads jug. It's just my wife and I so we do roughly 1 load a week. I'm very curious how a drier sheet sized paper can hold enough cleaning agent to wash a load of clothes, but i know dried things can concentrate stuff. Does it actually make suds? They say as long as there are suds, you aren't overwhelmingly your detergent.
I too judge the smell test. But also the clean test. But I guess they are one and the same in laundry.
Maybe I'll give um a try. I do appreciate the plastic alternative. Though there's always powder. I believe cardboard is better recycled than plastic.

I've been using TruEarth for several months, which does the exact same thing (except they're based in Canada), and while I generally like them, I don't feel like they do as good of stain removal over long periods of time. I'm curious if this one is any better, and if they're located in the US, that makes them better shipping-wise too!

The only thing I can think of that I've been able to cut down on plastic by switching to is the shampoo bars from Lush. I say "cut down" because when I first started getting them they came in little paper sleeves, but the last few times I ordered them they came in thin plastic sleeves instead. It's still way less plastic than your standard bottle of shampoo though and all of their stuff is cruelty free and they clearly label what is vegan. I have a hard time finding shampoo that works for my hair and the shampoo bars aren't perfect, but they work well enough and it's easier to get them than it is to find other alternatives (I have always been cursed by my shampoos being discontinued once I finally found one that worked for my hair)

Do you have powder detergent in the US? I got a giant one at my local supermarket (Germany) that comes in a cardboard box for like 7€ and have used it for over a year now… two washes per week, meaning one load costs 7cts! Plus soooo much plastic saved 😍

  • @mountainfiles608

Did the concept of powdered laundry detergent that comes in cardboard boxes just disappear at some point? I know they still exist, and I use them. You can just put the powder directly into the machine with the clothes if you have one of those machines that claims to demand liquid soap. Seems like reinventing the wooden toothpick.

A good way to get rid of pit smells in fabrics is to pre-soak in distilled or apple-cider vinegar. Kills off the bacteria that are causing the reactions with the sweat. It's also possible to use a slightly diluted ACV solution straight to the pits and letting it dry, before having a shower.

A lot of brands are coming out with those dissolvable tablets for kitchen/bathroom cleaners etc. I've seen tests and sadly they don't have the same cleaning power as regular organic cleaners, which I already find less effective than the traditional ones. I would buy them in a heartbeat, even if they are more expensive but not when they don't work as well.

Some other ideas for products that can be easily replaced with more eco-friendly alternative:
    * Safety razor + razor blades in place of regular disposable / head-swap razor. Lasts for life and on the long run saves a lot of money.
    * Barbers shaving soap in place of shaving foam/cream. Saves lots of money too, coz you are not paying for fancy package and high water content. A brush is needed and there are many non-vegan ones, so beware.
    * There are lots of plastic-free floss and toothbrush products, but might be more expensive than conventional ones.
    * There are lots of plastic-free toothpaste products (in aluminum package, toothsoap, powders etc.) but the ones with fluoride are hard to find.
    * A wooden brush with plant fibers for dishes instead of dish sponge. Lasts longer and can be cleaned and disinfected easily.
    * Bidet instead of toilet paper. It doesn't have to be a whole piece of furniture, there are some bidets that are like extension to the toilet seat. Saves lots of money on the long run and is more eco-friendly even tho it's probably made of plastic (if it's a seat extension).
    * There are eco-friendly deodorant products too. It's hard to find a proper one tho, different people might have different needs. Personally, just plain baking soda works fine for me, but probably won't for most people.

If you are using the unscented and the scented in the same washing machine in your house, then clothes are going to come out scented. It doesn't make much sense to use both of those in the same house. Besides that, unscented is better for your kids. Thanks for listening.

    • @lissaw4
      @lissaw4 3 ปีที่แล้ว

That's an understandable and reasonable initial thought. However, that would actually be dangerous and wasting even more products, that these people desperately need. So, I've done medical and crisis work throughout America, countries that are in humanitarian crisis, natural disasters, underdeveloped countries, etc where this is discussed quite often; as it's really a double edge sword and we often feel stuck. More sustainable packaging has so many benefits, but in this regard it also has extremely serious/devastating consequences at the same time. With our current available and cost effective options, contamination is a massive risk. Especially when there's water, traveling to vastly different environmental/ecological areas (think bugs, plants, animals, mold, bacteria, etc), dust, vastly different weather changes (extreme heat/cold, rain/snow, and even different daylight/dark hours and tides have an effect), etc. For example, if bugs, animals, mold, plant seeds, or viruses/bacteria were to contaminate a product in an area that's never dealt with it, it can very easily have absolutely devastating effects to the people, wildlife and environment. This is why there is such strict importing policy from country to country and even state to state. On top of that, it can often end up causing terrible contamination, damage and waste from product spills/packaging failures. On top of that, some eco friendly packaging also is not able to handle shipping, stacking, temperature and environmental pressure changes (even just when flying or shipping via freight train). Along with the added hazards it would create with transportation methods - which would increase costs or prevent even more supplies from being imported to areas in need. There has been an obscene amount of waste, contamination, illness, biohazards, cost, etc from these issues.
With that said, we absolutely need to find some kind of solution to this problem. I find it increasingly troubling that sustainable options that _could_ work in theory, are not in anyway affordable or cost effective enough to help make the switch/start effective testing. Until governments insist and supply funding for this issue, we will be forced to stay within this cycle.

Looks okay, but what happens to the detergent sheet after? If it's like dryer sheets etc those things have a loooong half-life, if they biodegrade at all. I'm a Brit so we have some different brands, but I don't know if you guys get Smol laundry pods? I have a subscription to them and they're brilliant. Cardboard safety packaged, comes through the letterbox and plastic free. I think its personal care that's the hardest to switch out, eg, plastic free toothbrushes, razors, deodorants etc. I use a refillable deodorant from Wild, and FFS Beauty razor subscription. Can't find a toothpaste I like, though.
