I enjoyed this one. It's a little rough around the edges, and that made it interesting. Lil Rowe was thought to be a rooster, and her name was Little Rue or roo or rowe...doesn't matter. It's great looking back to see how things became what they are now.
Good morning, All! Pete, @JustaFewAcresFarm, created pig stall water bowl triangles because they kept turning them over. Basically, 2 x 4s screwed to the exterior wall, the front stall wall, and then cross piece, connecting the two. There was enough depth to put the water bowl in, but tight enough that the pigs couldn't turn it over. Worked like a charm. You might want to give that a try.
Afternoon to ya! Yes I have seen Petes setup, although he has wooded walls which make it easy to attach to. I'll figure out something similar but I have little luck with tapcons attaching wood to block. Thanks for commenting!
I really didn't know chickens ate mice until I saw another video of yours. Pretty good 👍🏼 Yeah those roosting posts look great. They'll love em, I know they will 😋
Only reason I’m not worried about Rita is because I read a comment from a viewer saying that she & Mumbles become dear friends. I’m prepared for Mumble’s injuries too so I won’t be too upset 🤞🏻 when it happens/I get up to that video
I love finding a past video i havent seen yet. I had another good laugh watching you herd the new chickens!! They'll be so cozy once they get their pecking order sorted out! Those roosts are really nice! It's good to see Mumbles starting to include Rita. ❤
If you want to breed your own chicken and keep a rooster or two, you should keep in mind that Yokohama are laying around 50 eggs per year and Brahma around 150. Little Roo and Bert would not be the best choice as breeding roos. The other two are Salmon Faverolles and Ameraucana (I guess it's an Ameraucana). This breeds lay around 250 eggs, so you will definitely have better layers from them. Also, just to keep in mind, if you're more interested in how much they lay than how they look, I would not add Brahmas anymore. Most breeds you have there (Hamburg, Orpington, Plymouth, Sussex,...) are actually good layers and even if they don't lay as much as hybrid breeds do, they are healthier and lay good for several years, hybrids start to have health issues after a year.
Thanks! I appreciate all the info, I'm leaning that way too. The yokohoma is just for show, and maybe not even a roo.. , and Burt is way too big for the job. Sammy and Rufio should be good and I'll separate the brahmas before I do breeding eggs.
@@WhittAcresHomestead Yes, Sammy and Rufio would be perfect. You will need 2 Rooster for so many hens anyway. As I wrote on a previous video, look at the saddle and neck feathers, if they have pointy ends it's a rooster and if they are round it's a hen. He is big enough to be able to see it without a doubt on this signs. When you keep animals, you always learn new things. I keep chickens since over 30 years and still learn sometimes new things. If you want a good advise I learned the hard way, stay away from hybrid breeds. All those Red Star, Isa Brown and how else they are called, are super layers. They do lay over 300 to 350 eggs per year, but they are burned out easy. Because they lay so many and it's impossible for the body to assimilate the amount of calcium they use, they start to have all sorts of diseases related to bad bones or get egg bound. They start to have a quite miserable life, even if they life for a few years. Good heritage breads like the ones you have (maybe not the brahma, if you want more eggs, it's more for show) might lay only around 250 and less each year, but they are healthy. I had heritage breeds that still did lay quite good when they were 3 years old, still better than Brahmas 😂 Other heritage breeds that lay really good and can try out are Rhode Island Red, Wyandottes, New Hempshire, American Bresse, Marans and many others. I really recomand you the American Bresse and the Marans though.
I didn't have a good selection when i for all the brahmas but i figured they might lay well in the winter, in not worried about maximum egg production I like have various breeds. And so far just seeing how big Burt is has been worth getting the brahmas lol.
@@WhittAcresHomestead I totally get it 😂 I just assumed you want more productive chickens, because you call it your layer flock. I got many breeds in the same flock myself and there are some that really are not laying many eggs, like the indian fighter hens and the silkys. I even keep the hens when they are quite old and don't really lay much at all. I just send to freezer camp the extra roosters and raise meat chickens for the meat. The oldest hen in my flock right now is 11 years old
Hopefully they moved from the corner right beneath the original flock, otherwise they will need a bath the next morning. Was so funny to see all of them piled up in the area between the barn and pen. Chicken got to tired out to eat her mouse. Bonnie, Dizzy, and Sedgewick keeping and creating order. Progress on the turkey pen is looking great. Will you be siding it layered/lap horizontal? 💖💖🎶🎶
you can breed brother and sister in birds..... just dont let thier poults reproduce together...it looks like you have 2 jakes and a hen..if you can find a blue slate hen or lavender slate hen you will get blue sweetgrass...but if you breed them together im not sure if you will get sweetgrass and blue sweetgrass or mixes. i have seen a pic of blue sweetgrass...beautiful birds! slates that ive had are sweet calm birds...get vid!!!
lol hey Cody have you ever thought about ad-libbing your animals while you’re trying to move them or something similar? I can only imagine the things you would come up with that your animals are thinking 🤔 🤣🤣
You chasing chickens will always be funny 😂
I like it, good idea 💡 😊❤❤❤
Hi Bonnie, 😊❤
Cody, your garden is beautiful ❤

Yeah I ordered Lil Rowe as a male so I said Lil Roo for lil rooster. Then she laid an egg.
@@WhittAcresHomestead lol literally 😂
That's so cool 😎 respect
Thank you!
It is so cool the way Mumbles understands you most of the time.

If anything moves smooth all the time it would be boring.
