I just loved this song!!! Years ago on 4KQ a bloke rang up saying that the young young blokes at his work place didn't believe him when he told them about this Ozzie Ocker Classic & they played it. I bet that SHUT the young blokes UP well & good!!!
I'm a Kiwi and was so young when my older siblings introduced me to this "flamin classic" .... so I was just sitting here and some question about Newcastle came on TV (they were talking about the UK though) but I just had to find this song ... I couldn't remember the name so I searched lyrics "as every Newcastle man knows when there's a break in the traffic" strangely enough it popped right up 🤣🤣🤣
In my 20's when this came out and lived in Victoria. After 2 weeks of hearing this on the radio, I HAD to drive to Newcastle to take a cruise up and down Hunter St. Bit over 40 years ago and still have a laugh at the song.
Thank you so much for this - I lost my record years ago (or rather someone sold it while I was overseas. Bob and I used to be very close and I was one of the Tonsillettes (his backing group) for a while.
I adore this song. My lovely Aussie friend introduced me to it. I then replaced her vinyl :-) I am in the UK. I always think of my friend when I play this one :-)
Dad's from Newcastle and he played this on a cassette when we drove to Scone to visit some family when I was about ten. Still sticks with me, Seemed like a mystical place at the time, still is somewhat enigmatic from my perspective as a Melbournian I guess. Definitely makes me think about Dad as a young bloke in Newcastle though.
I was 13 at a private girls school we thoight this song was hilarious. It was shades of things to come with kiwis, aussies, American, canadians, Brits and others. It didn't matter the country the guys will always try it on, it was a great time to be alive.😊
OMG I come from the Hunter Valley & we'd drive 50 miles to get to Newcastle for a good time. Then there was the answering song sung from the girls point of view. I miss those fun days & would trade my kids for one chance of a 1970s year.
Bob Hudson was a good bloke; his album had a couple of good songs by Bohdan Dobrianski. Rare and good. Us Belmont boys would drive all the way to Newcastle to drive down Hunter Street and look at the girls and go 'Hoooeeerrh'.
I'm surprised Hillsong didn't do this song at their Newcastle gig. Surprising since the chorus lyrics basically go "Don't you ever let a chance go by, oh Lord". (For the record, in the second half of the song, the girl's real name is PFFTHTH PFFHTHHTH.)
Well surely someone must have it and can make a video file out of it. That's the good thing about the internet someone out there has it he she just has to get off their ass and submit it calling anyone whos got it get off your ass and submit it. P.S. Did anything funny happen in the clip
I used to stop at a milk bar in Hamilton on the main road there coming home from the beach each time without fail to get a passionfruit ice cream or a milk shake from those cool silver goblet mixer machines. I used to dream that this was the milk bar in the song, maybe it was, Hamilton was the ethnic area after all and the Parthenon is a greek name. well anyway, my dream and my memories remain intact. ahhhh
when the song came out; (1974-75'ish?) - i was 10 - and everyone i knew had a mum and dad who already knew about the Parthenon Milkbar in Hunter St Newcastle; before the song came out. It was an Icon. I'm pretty sure this had a lot to do with its huge success at the time. The 1970's were the best. As good a decade as it is possible to experience. You had to be there, lol.
It's still like this, only they they replaced the holden with Mitsubishi lancers with neon lights and chrome gas pipes. Newcastle's greatest news reporter is still Bob Hudson, Rest In Peace. From an American in Newcastle.
@moblet I have a digital turntable and have recorded the album straight to mp3 on a memory stick but it recorded tinny as hell.I have ordered the cd from pressplay.I figured it would be much better than anything I can do.Thank you for the heads up.Now how to get the cd onto youtube??? No doubt its simpler than it sounds....I hope.
@theoldgalah: 2 ways to do it: 1. Use a USB turntable. 2. Play the audio into the Line In on your computer and use recording software (e.g. the freeware Audacity) to save it as a digital audio file. Though I just did some searching and found most, if not all, of the songs on a compilation CD available online at pressplaymusic.
@theoldgalah My CD arrived today and all the songs are there (yay!). Can now pump them out on community radio too. I've never uploaded a video here, and only do audio editing, not video, so I'm not the guy to ask...
@moblet No worries. Thanks for the heads up re pressplay.I reckon a man of your obvious skill and talent could probably upload them with not too much effort. When I get my Cd I will look into it anyway.Thankyou
Ahhhh, the ol' one size fits all safety boot. Be careful who you give yourself to. The promise might balloon out of control. Only an Auzzie would think of the p26.
Notice not one F or C word in this let's see a comedian do that today get through an act with out those two words. Wish tha ti were there. People did something right in the seventies or is that a rose coloured glasses view of things? Only yous that were there would really know. Your thought please. P.S. There's still a grain of truth in this song
That's fascinating they did things right in the 70s despite the mental religious turmoil like what's gone on for the last 20years now it's called mental illness it's ridiculous a mate adrian lowe got me onto this song he remembers it from his childhood I was a bit later I'm at Nixon spies today...
@PogoMorgan He became a DJ on JJ (now JJJ) and according to Wikipedia later did a PhD in Anthropology. Found a USyd anthropologist called Bob Hudson's webpage, main research the urban history of Burma. I hope for his sake that the junta over there has a sense of humour, or that they confiscated his guitar for his own safety.
Talking about this with a friend recently and just had to share it with him being a former novocastrian now living in Melbourne made me a bit home sick. Newcastle city council should of invested in saving the palais rather than allowing the developers to buy into it and knock it down and put in kfc
Raziq Ramadhan A. Very very old Australian song and I love playing my old school, if those that don't like it can't help you and ain't my choice, play your own utube sit on it and rotate

Just heard Bob on ABC with Richard Fidler. Had to listen to this again been a long time. Great humour so accurate to the time!
Me too, but I was out when the interview was aired, and I forgot to listen to the song when I arrived home. I'm glad that I finally remembered.
Saw him play this at Festival Hall in Melbourne. Support to AC/DC and Skyhooks. A great laugh!
Neil, that's what is called " The Good Old Days "
I was 13 at a private girls school we thoight this song was hilarious. It was shades of things to come with kiwis, aussies, American, canadians, Brits and others. It didn't matter the country the guys will always try it on, it was a great time to be alive.😊

Born 2 minutes walk from there in 60 middle name Norman after uncle that passed from ww2 injuries..
Bout right. Good times..
Great old song...
in a comment, Bob Hudson stated that the hell angel bike had 4'foot ripple sole boots
They would take the side of your face off! Ripples were deadly, nastier than steelcaps.
Bob Hudson was a good bloke; his album had a couple of good songs by Bohdan Dobrianski. Rare and good. Us Belmont boys would drive all the way to Newcastle to drive down Hunter Street and look at the girls and go 'Hoooeeerrh'.
Patrick I've checked on Bob's physical status and it appears that he is ALIVE and well.
He is still a GOOD BLOKE!!!!!
We don't have to play him down anymore 😊
I'm surprised Hillsong didn't do this song at their Newcastle gig. Surprising since the chorus lyrics basically go "Don't you ever let a chance go by, oh Lord".
(For the record, in the second half of the song, the girl's real name is PFFTHTH PFFHTHHTH.)
Hahahahaha
There used to be a film clip to this song. Wish it was here.
Well surely someone must have it and can make a video file out of it. That's the good thing about the internet someone out there has it he she just has to get off their ass and submit it calling anyone whos got it get off your ass and submit it. P.S. Did anything funny happen in the clip
That was only for the 7"/radio mix - it left out the story of CinderFred and (pffft).
Wish it was here 😂
Absolute classic Aussie song
Should be the national anthem 😆🇦🇺🤣🤣
For some people it is!! LOL!!
Im in my 50s,an this is the only one i have seen live
A classic. And the version which should always be used, as the radio, chopped, version didn't actually make sense.
I used to stop at a milk bar in Hamilton on the main road there coming home from the beach each time without fail to get a passionfruit ice cream or a milk shake from those cool silver goblet mixer machines. Marissasrehearsal jims bloody oath
In Adelaide we were wondering what a milk Bar was, then we saw Grease.
the Parthenon Milkbar was an actual; and famous/infamous; Milkbar in Hunter St. Newcastle.

I believe when the song came out the Parthenon did not exist.
