- Jonathan Cain was a guest on The Blazy & Bob "Breakfast Club" show in 1988 and performed "Midnight Rendezvous". It's a song he co-wrote with John Waite for the Baby's "Union Jack" album. Here's Jonathan performing it with the KOME live show band, The Blazers. He's on lead vocals and keyboards, along with Greg Mullins lead guitar, Dennis Coulter drums, Larry Seidlitz guitar, and Brian Cutts on bass. Peg Bertsch is most likely doing the high harmony. Apologies for not including her in the video credits. Thanks to Pete Roberts for the great job on sound.*. This was broadcast live from the Double Tree Hotel in Santa Clara. It was the first year we were doing the monthly shows with a live audience. A Bay Area radio first.
Throughout my morning show radio career, Jonathan has always been one of the nicest guys and giving of his time. He's always been helpful getting my radio listeners meet and greets at several Journey shows. The morning after The Soprano's finale, Jonathan called into my show to talk about how Journey's (and his song) "Don't Stop Believin'" came to be in the final scene. Another time, I sat with him while we watched his daughter Madison sing at a winery. Neal Schon's son Miles was on guitar. Madison would later appear on The Voice. She married Trevor Lukather, son of Toto's Steve Lukather.
*If you haven't read any other notes on my channel, the early days of the "Breakfast Club" shows were broadcast from a hotel using only a boosted phone line back to the main studio. It's all we had at the time. Thus why an entire rock band sounds a bit squelched in this recording. It was also live. There wasn't much time for a sound check prior to the guests performing songs. It's another reason we were always impressed with our band The Blazers. No rehearsal with the artist. It happened absolutely live. Thanks to Ron Nenni and Dave Wohlman, without whom these shows wouldn't have happened. PLEASE SUBSCRIBE! Thank you so much for listening and keeping these music memories alive. As always, thanks to the listeners who arrived by 6:30 A.M. to be "Live, Dammit!"
