Put yourself in the shoes of Shahzeb Khan's parents - you've just come back from your daughter's valima and you get a call saying your son has been shot dead.
You rush to the hospital hoping against hope, the family members still dressed in their lehngas and suits are there, the bride and the groom did not even get time to change.
This is just the beginning of a decade of heartbreak.
Shazeb Khan was shot in cold blood. His car was pursued by two monsters who shot him 4 times. A 21 year old boy who was his parent's only son.
    And for what?
Because he asked Talpur's guards not to harass his sister. How dare a common man stand up for himself against the overlords of this country?
That was enough for him to call Shahrukh Jatoi and for those two to murder Shazeb Khan in the middle of a lawless Karachi street.
Journalist Saad Hasan writes about how during his last days Shazeb Khan's father would wear his dead son's tattered clothes and walk barefoot on the streets of Karachi.
This country not only took his son, it gave him no justice, it took away his hope - for ten years the case was in the courts with Shahzeb's parents being continuously harassed.
They caved. Who wouldn't have? And what did we do? Started spreading rumours that they took money.
I wouldn't be surprised if the old man simply died of heartbreak.
Where do we begin to trace everything that went wrong for this to happen?
How do people feel they have the power to shoot someone in the streets?
Why do they feel even their guards are free to harass any woman they want?
Is it Patriarchy? Is it Chauvinism? Is it Feudalism? What hurt their ego so much to see a boy stand up for his sister?
    Who made Karachi this lawless?
Who brought all this ammunition into Pakistan?
Who benefits from keeping feudals and electables in Pakistan?
Most people do what they always do, find the political party they hate the most, abuse them and go to sleep till tomorrow when this happens again.
Just a few cases get the media attention but lets be honest this happens everyday in Karachi. Those in power feel they are free to shoot down those without. Rob them of their homes, their lands, and even their families.
And we all stand by and watch the show - more concerned about which political party wins a stupid by-election.
Here is the truth most of you are not ready to accept because simplistic explanations feel more soothing - no messiah will bring you freedom, especially not the one you think.
All the elite mainstream political parties are a cabal - they are in cahoots with the Establishment. They use the public to come into power but at the end of the day the elite protect the interests of the elite.
PPP was in power, Sindh Police was under them, Shahrukh Jatoi allegedly hid in the Governor house which had a MQM Governor, Shahrukh Jatoi's father was allied with Musharaf, his uncle is the General Secretary for Sindh for PTI, his cousin is a PTI ticket holder.
The lawyers who got him free are PPP's Latif Khosa and PTI's Babar Awan - these parties tell us that the other party members are not even fit to sit with but when it comes to protecting one of their own, they all come together.
And I don't think I can say anything honest about the judiciary here without getting a contempt of court notice - I'll just say this farcical trial and judgment is a contempt of the entire idea of justice.
An idea completely out of reach for the common Pakistan. This is not a failure of the system, this is the system at work, the system is designed by the elite to protect the elite, it is not a system for the many but for the few.
The diyaat law was brought in by Zia-ul-Haq loyalists, Islamic scholars will argue that it doesn't apply in cases of wilful murder but what Islam says doesn't matter in Pakistan, what matters is how the state uses Islam for its advantage - now that deeyat is seen as an Islamic law it is above criticism, and whether it is Shahrukh Jatoi, Kashmala Tariq's sons or Raymond Davis, the state ensures the powerful are kept safe by using the law.
Since nobody else will - I will say it -the law needs to change. Families cannot forgive the murderer when doing so endangers the entire public, this is not just a crime against a person, this is a crime against the state.
But where do we argue that when it is the state that stands against the people to protect the powerful? What can one feel but hopelessness?
Everyday this country finds a new way to break your heart, and today we are all heartbroken.

Shehzad beta, it’s sad beyond words. It has been like this for a long time. I have personally seen the justice system fail my father and my family . The laws favour only the strong and powerful. I feel sad, angry and bitter at the same time. And feel like this every time this happens. And this is a common occurrence. I have left Pakistan but not everyone can. And even here the pain is still in me. And it will be with me as long as I am alive.

The fact that you could speak so much on this gut-wrenching topic and said volumes more than many could. Thanks for all your help. There are no words anyone can say to Shahzeb's family. To say "Allah will bring him justice" seems so futile when an entire family was destroyed. And you are right about the system being designed for the elite, by the elite.

I've stopped expecting the State to provide solutions and I do not think a top-down perspective of social and cultural transformation is viable in Pakistan. The only change (which is much more arduous and excruciating) that can be expected is from the mass of civil society. The citizens of Pakistan are in a hostile and abusive relationship with the State and no amount of wishful thinking will change that. I left Pakistan 2 years ago precisely for this reason because unless you have a lot of money, have connections or relatives who have political capital, you and your family are one incident away from annihilation. I miss home terribly but I do not want to experience the heartbreak that Shahrukh Jatoi's victims are going through.

undoubtedly, You summed it up well, The system is designed to protect the elite, the untouchables in this country. When the news of Shahzaib's father signing a peace deal with Jatoi's came up a few years back, some of us were convinced that the system is working to protect untouchables. This case was gone in favor of criminals since then. They made his father yield and he ultimately yielded (thanks to the broken society we have become).

Step back a little from the situation and I ask people a hypothetical question. Had Shahzaib murdered anyone of us instead, under the same circumstances, how likely would our families have gotten justice given the fact that Shahzaib himself belonged to a much more powerful family than most of us. I honestly believe, even FIR against Shahzaib would not have been registered ! Whether it is a dispute with your tenant or neighbor, or the disputes on the national level. Whoever has greater capacity to wage violence, gets desired result in a dispute. The constitution and laws of Pakistan work overtime to achieve the results desired by the person or gang who commands greater capacity to wage violence.

That thug kid who shot Shahzeb with premeditated murder should be under life imprisonment in jail where he could get up every day and think about what he had done and why he would never see the light of day in his life. Pakistan ko bad dua lagi hai un logo ki jo bila kasoor o khata maare ja rahe the 1947 me, sarhad k dono taraf, ek paagal aadmi k junoon ki wajah se...
Duniya se jaate huye haaye laga k gaye hain wo 10 lakh log aap k mulk ko (us pr irony ye k unhe pata b nahi tha kyu maare ja rahe hain)...
