Did it really break? Or did it just like unravel at the peg and make a snapping sound? The latter happened to me and it scared me. If it really broke, try to tune it about 2-3 steps down so it doesn't get all of the tension from standard tuning right away. Then just raise and lower the pitch to stretch the strings. If that doesn't work maybe try another gauge?
***** I honestly feel like I'll end up messing the strings even more, I don't know what strings to get or anything, I barely got the guitar for my birthday and i tuned it too much. Can you help

Do you have any advice for somebody who has never changed strings before? I’m really scared of messing up and accidentally winding them on the wrong way, or damaging my guitar.
Thank you, this was a very helpful tutorial! I replaced all six of my strings (including a broken one) for the first time today after watching this video. A+ teaching and very simple to do
Thank you Fender, for a nice 6 minute video!.... I'm not sure why some of the others think they need 30, 40 + minutes to show the same information... I've been changing strings since the 1970's, but at my present mental capacity, I still watch re-watch you video to make sure I do it right! ☺... By the way, I have a LOT of guitars. Two of my favorites are my Telecaster and my Fender Acoustic-electric...
FattyMateo because if you mess up ur done and u have no more string lead left but if you just pull it all the through and then cut it it is way easier and safer
This is probably the best re-stringing video on TH-cam. Cutting to length prior to tightening makes a big difference. Using this method I’ve never broken a string while tightening.
I broke my E string today To see if I still feel pain I focus on the pain (the pain when snapping a guitar string) The only thing that's real Definitely a Johnny Cash Hurt parody.
Matman Azure well theres no actual difference on replace all strings at once or two at a time just a preference. in fact im sure most people remove all strings at once then replace. i guess my point is that this tip is very handful
Akenzie I've been told by an authorized repairer not to, unless you've got the neck pinned down. But I did spend 1000-3500 on each of my guitars, so i'm not risking it
You can buy string sets, where the strings come in individual envelopes inside the box - Elixir strings generally do that, and I think that it would help you a lot as a color blind. They're generally great strings too :)
So I changed my strings for the first time. Everything went well. When I went to put it away, keep in mind I didn’t cut the remaining piece of string at the tuning peg, so I grabbed my guitar from the neck, then I touched the headstock forgetting I didn’t cut the string completely. Guess what? The High E String literally PUNCTURED my palm. That was very damn painful... Blood just started comin out ha... that hurt a lot 😂
Yeah i had a similar situation just because the clipped part of the high e was pointing upwards. I didn't bleed much or anything, just had a very surprising prick in my palm and a drop of blood. I bent it downwards and have been a lot more careful after that.
I've paid to have my guitar strings changed for over 20 years. Thank you sooo much, as of this moment, I just changed them on my own for the first time. Now to tuning my treasured 62 Martin d28 I've not touched on a couple of years bc it needed new strings
Excellent instruction. One thing: It's only at the END of the video, about 5:46, that you say "...you want to have your first winding ABOVE the inserted string on the peg and the second below..." If I am understanding you correctly, should that not have been mentioned when doing the low E string...at the beginning? Thank you.
Zom beck Well if your like me and dont live close to a "music" store, its always nice to have one just in case until you get a new one, of course its not ideal, but its a temporary solution :)
niklas arnell actually im a guitarist and you replace them because they start to turn into another material and that can *infect* all the other parts in your guitar and ruin it that's why you need brand new ones
Thank you. I grew up in a family of guitar playing starting with my great grandmother with old fashion baptist gospel to my maternal uncles playing lynard skynard, ac dc, ozzy etc. In all those years i never watched any of them string their guitars which they did often and i never had to do it myself. i watched this video cause my mom bought my 7 yr old son his first guitar and one of the strings became very loose. I appreciate your video being to the point and so simple to follow.
I was tracking pretty well up until that last bit of "oh, by the way" detail about overlapping the strings that are unwound but not overlapping the strings that are wound? That completely spooked me into finding a different instructional video.
Been a long time I’ve had the strings just hadn’t gotten to it. Followed this vid and works like a charm. Guitar sounds great. I might’ve left a just a bit too much on the 6th string since it’s so thick with multiple winds but it still worked out well. Should’ve done this a while ago
*Don't cut string before hand*, the thin strings are slippy and cutting 1 1/2 machine heads distance on thin strings will give you out of tune half way through your set, wind lots on your thin strings to ensure they don't slip
Excellent short simple precise video. Been playing for years, and decided to change my own strings as it’s expensive to send out. Such a helpful video. TY
Instead of cutting the string ends off, just wiggle them till they break, that way you wont have that sharp edge, and that gives it the professional look of perfect stringing :)
I feel like this is the most wholesome and incredible comment section on TH-cam with everyone trying to help eachother :)) I jus learnt how to restring guitar’s properly recently and I love that everyone’s in the exact same boat as me :)
My guitar string (String 4, D) snapped while I was tuning it. For some reason, the electric tuner I was using kept saying that the string was between either E or G. So frustrating, I tuned it so much that it snapped. >.< Left a huge red scar down my arm. Then I watched this video and managed to get the new string back on. As you can tell, I'm a complete amateur guitarist, lol.
Best advice I can give is cut your strings, however not to the extent he does. Make sure you still have a bit more than you need just in case. Another is to consistently make sure the string doesn't unwind itself while simultaneously holding it down just below the nut at the head stock. It's tricks]y but once you eventually get it wound up be VERY slow with how you tune it and give your guitar time to adjust to the new strings. Take a few breaks in between and go slowly and eventually you'll be fine. :)
This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. 1. It's okay to take every string off at once, it's not gonna affect your guitar in any way 2. It doesn't really matter which bridge pin you use for which string 3. You should never, ever, EVER cut the string before winding it around the machine head, because that can mess things up big time (I know from experience) 4. He doesn't really tell you how to wind the string around the machine head
Yeah I just accidentally cut my G string too short and now it wont fit in the hole. Edit: I promise i only realized how wrong this sounds after writing it...
Be careful if you cut the string before winding, especially if you tune below concert pitch. I always wind first and leave plenty of slack in case I want to go down a half-step or a step. Also, always tune up to the note. If you go past the note, go back down and then go up to it.
Joseph James instructions sucked ass everytime I try to tighten the strings they overlap but when he did it they didnt and he doesn't explain what to do to not get them to overlap
Ok so I got this old guitar from my brother. And the strings hadn’t been changed in probably a decade. And a friend of mine gave me new strings and told me to be very careful because when he first tried to restring his guitar he went through the three packs. So I planned to watch like 40 videos before I tried. Then I abandoned that plan and watched this one and just kind of got the gist of it. And I actually did it!! I didn’t break any strings and they are all in the right spot!! Anyway just wanted to share cuz I’m proud of myself 😃
wow thanks this was very helpful!, now my mum doesn't need to know I accidentally snapped her guitar string.. Thanks for saving me from a week of grounding.......
1. Unless you're doing something else besides just changing strings, change one string at a time, (this helps to keep the neck straight and holds the intonation longer). 2. When you remove a string, use a lead pencil on the nut grooves so your strings slide easier and aren't prone to hanging, for better in-tune playing. 3. Put three finger under the string once you get it past the nut, two fingers for the G and D strings due them being furthest away), before putting the STRINGS into the peg winders, to give yourself enough string length for a couple of winds around the peg before the string is in tuning range. 4. Put the pegs with the holes facing horizontal to the guitar as your looking down the neck. Put the string in so it has to turn at a 90 degree angle, then turn up away from the guitar, bring the string back, then go under the string and bring upward and over, then tighten. Then start winding the string tighter, (always towards the inner part of the guitar. This will give you a nice loop that will keep the string from slipping. 5. Bend about a half inch of the excess wound strings up top before you cut them, so they don't unravel. (I actually do this to all of them just to keep in the habit) 6.Tune & Play - Enjoy!
I always find that if you put a kink in the string by the ball end it helps to keep the end of the string in the perfect place against the bridge plate and prevents the bridge pin from popping out. Also very halloween themed "candy apple ball end" good job! Thanks for the video 👍
It does on the thinner strings. I definitely did that. Way too much experience in restringing badly and having some knowledge of wire wrapping jewelry as a teen. But be extremely careful. Very thin strings break very easy! Slight bend. Very slight.
If your new to this like i am, I give extra slack just in case! Your first few string changes will be uncomfortable and awkward, sometimes even terrifying! Do not panic friends, trust your insticts and get er done ❤
Okay seriously, do not try to do this shit by hand. Spend a little bit of money and get a string winder. I'm a beginner and had to change my strings for the first time and I didn't have the proper equipment. I thought nahhh, I can do it by hand it'll be fine. By the time I had all six strings on it had taken almost two hours, I broke two brand new strings, and pricked my fingers about 4 times. Such a pain in the ass haha. That's what I get for being cheap I guess.
Thomas Furlan k imo, if u dont cut them its hard to take them out. cuz the top part is curly, if u pull them out from the bottom they don't really go through the hole.
Some negative comments here, but I followed the steps and I have found that I've not done a better job, of restringing an acoustic gtr, since I watched this video. Thank you.
I personally never clip strings, taking them off or putting them on, let's say one breaks and I don't have another pack on hand...well I'd be screwed, so I don't clip, so I can re use an old one if needed.
I literally just finished tuning and replacing the string that broke and then when I go to tune the next string it breaks and I am so ANGRY EHJDJDDDJDIKDJSJEIUJEJSJ 😡
This is an awesome video. Great job, but I also think the string stretching should be included a very important step after you've done all this, please check out other videos on how to stretch your guitar strings to break them in properly and keep them in tune. If you don't have one, I recommend you getting a string stretching tool.

Title: “how to change acoustic guitar strings”
*starts video with electric guitar playing*
Thank you Fender, for a nice 6 minute video!.... I'm not sure why some of the others think they need 30, 40 + minutes to show the same information... I've been changing strings since the 1970's, but at my present mental capacity, I still watch re-watch you video to make sure I do it right! ☺... By the way, I have a LOT of guitars. Two of my favorites are my Telecaster and my Fender Acoustic-electric...
I get my strings from my cat's mustache.
I use my pubes

WARNING: Do not pre cut the strings that's just stupid never do that
Noah Andrews why?
FattyMateo because if you mess up ur done and u have no more string lead left but if you just pull it all the through and then cut it it is way easier and safer
if you do it as per the video you actually have too much string on the machine heads anyway. Three winds on each machine head is plenty.
I measured and cut 2"from the machine head and they turned out purdy
Noah Andrews I just spent 3 hours struggling because I cut the strings 😂 oopsie
This is probably the best re-stringing video on TH-cam. Cutting to length prior to tightening makes a big difference. Using this method I’ve never broken a string while tightening.
I bought brand new strings two hours ago and did just like you said and I broke them, thanks

@@gabrielhung400 i dont know abt tune...but i got it perfectly

lmao
this video is really bad
I broke my E string today
To see if I still feel pain
I focus on the pain (the pain when snapping a guitar string)

Definitely a Johnny Cash Hurt parody.
@flyingwhale The old familiar sting

What have I become,
without my high E string
😭
The time and energy it took for y’all to make this DIY video is very much appreciated! I snapped my 1st string (string) before watching this. Lol.
TIP: If your bridge pegs won't come out, you can put your hand in the guitar and push them up/out from inside.
Matman Azure well theres no actual difference on replace all strings at once or two at a time just a preference. in fact im sure most people remove all strings at once then replace. i guess my point is that this tip is very handful
Thanks dude, now my hand is stuck inside the guitar
Akenzie I've been told by an authorized repairer not to, unless you've got the neck pinned down. But I did spend 1000-3500 on each of my guitars, so i'm not risking it
i needed to use the handle of my pliers to push that shit out. my fingers hurts from all the poking
Thanks for ruining my day.
Yeah i had a similar situation just because the clipped part of the high e was pointing upwards. I didn't bleed much or anything, just had a very surprising prick in my palm and a drop of blood. I bent it downwards and have been a lot more careful after that.
I hope you didn't give up and now are decent at guitar?
Luckily for you it was your hand for me my eye
@@waynevoyles2163 are you alright??!
Been at my gig as a guitar repair guy for about a week, on my lunch now with a fender acoustic on my bench, hope this video helps me out!
Thank you.
instructions were unclear, I've lost a lot blood acrosst my body... send help
First timer, eh?
ytubeanon I guess the High E got you didn't it😂
Joshua Vincent changing right now high e got me in the palm of my hand
Just a heads up, instead of cutting the string just loosen it and pull it off, that way you have a string in case you need one for later.
Hoarder.
not really ideal to reuse old strings.. they get replaced for a reason.
I'm sure the guitar store will thank you as they collect your money for the new strings.
Out of all the videos I have watched on this, yours is by far the easiest and most straightforward. Thank you for keeping it simple and to the point.
Thank you so much! I always had a hard time with the high strings, you made it so easy and straight to the point.
can you do this while eating a burger?
good answer
That's very american if you ask me 😂
As long as there’s no *string* cheese
Wrong channel
Why?
I was tracking pretty well up until that last bit of "oh, by the way" detail about overlapping the strings that are unwound but not overlapping the strings that are wound? That completely spooked me into finding a different instructional video.
Hahah exact same!
First time changing my guitar strings because I always brought my guitar to the music store... Very helpful video.
Been playing guitar for 13 years, found this very helpful. Just stringed up my Taylor, Scarlet.
Been a long time I’ve had the strings just hadn’t gotten to it. Followed this vid and works like a charm. Guitar sounds great. I might’ve left a just a bit too much on the 6th string since it’s so thick with multiple winds but it still worked out well. Should’ve done this a while ago
Glad to have been a help, Mark! Rock on! 🤘🎸
@@fender supporting here in the Philippines
*Don't cut string before hand*, the thin strings are slippy and cutting 1 1/2 machine heads distance on thin strings will give you out of tune half way through your set, wind lots on your thin strings to ensure they don't slip
Gigsand Busking i do precut. make it easier to thighten the string without the sticking up string
3:15 for attaching string to the peg in case anyone else didn't care to watch him wind destring and attach the new ones to the bridge
Excellent short simple precise video. Been playing for years, and decided to change my own strings as it’s expensive to send out. Such a helpful video. TY
The video I come back to every 6 months.
Sooo scared of them snapping
Robert Brown the only reason that they would snap would be if they are higher than pitch. Keep a tuner close by.
I overbend the 3rd string of my acoustic guitar and it snap out of existence
I haven't changed my strings in over a year and when I finally did I snapped three high e strings.
this video isn’t that accurate tbh
Instead of cutting the string ends off, just wiggle them till they break, that way you wont have that sharp edge, and that gives it the professional look of perfect stringing :)
I feel like this is the most wholesome and incredible comment section on TH-cam with everyone trying to help eachother :)) I jus learnt how to restring guitar’s properly recently and I love that everyone’s in the exact same boat as me :)
Excellent tutorial, thank you. I watched your video twice, then changed the strings. What a satisfying feeling 👌
1:39 Mostly I just use pliers and pull the pin out of its place. It wont harm the guitar just turn and pull and it should come loose.
I use keys
I hadn't even had my guitar for a week and I managed to break one of the strings. 😞

@@logical_harm The same thing happened to me, makes me feel a little bit better that I’m not the only person that’s happened to
My guitar string (String 4, D) snapped while I was tuning it.
Same thing happened to me not 10 minutes ago :)

I had the low E snap off and hit me in the face...
my high E snapped just now. lol good thing my cat like reflexes dodged the string.
Brilliant , best string change technic I came across on TH-cam , fast and easy, thanks
Thanks to your video we changed our whole set of acoustic strings. so much easier than we expected! Thanks! Liked and subbed!!
I always keep the old strings safe. Incase the new ones snap 😂
Purchase Ernie Balls mate. Best ones around- they never go ‘dull’.
I’ve watched this more times than I care to admit
Had to come back and watch this to double check that im doing this right. Been playing for years and it still helps to check the basics.
Thanks. I really enjoyed this tutorial. Very easy to understand. I'll use this as my guide next time I change my guitar strings. Gil from Texas
This guy doesn't know what he's talking about.
1. It's okay to take every string off at once, it's not gonna affect your guitar in any way
2. It doesn't really matter which bridge pin you use for which string
3. You should never, ever, EVER cut the string before winding it around the machine head, because that can mess things up big time (I know from experience)
4. He doesn't really tell you how to wind the string around the machine head
Yeah I just accidentally cut my G string too short and now it wont fit in the hole.
Edit: I promise i only realized how wrong this sounds after writing it...
+Myfavsandlikes hahahaha
@@myfavsandlikes7478 I don't get it
This is true so thanks for telling me but, why are you watching a tutorial when you already know how to?
Thank you so much brother! I was worrying about those damn bridge pins lol
Be careful if you cut the string before winding, especially if you tune below concert pitch. I always wind first and leave plenty of slack in case I want to go down a half-step or a step.
Also, always tune up to the note. If you go past the note, go back down and then go up to it.
yeah thanks for spending two fucking seconds on the two thinnest strings and an important step
Joseph James instructions sucked ass everytime I try to tighten the strings they overlap but when he did it they didnt and he doesn't explain what to do to not get them to overlap
I’m a Mexican’t and I got it the 1st time........:: you guys should stick to building spaceship 🚀 and curing aids
Israel Moreno dude stop being so ignorant. Not everyone hates you because of your race honey.
Israel Moreno And you should stick to tacos and cheap labour
Joseph James thank you. I’m glad i wasn’t the only one pissed because of that.
Anyway just wanted to share cuz I’m proud of myself 😃
i just picked up a guitar for the first time, spent about 2 minutes tuning and the string snapped, confidence is through the roof
wow thanks this was very helpful!, now my mum doesn't need to know I accidentally snapped her guitar string..
The string which breaks easily..
High E:it's me...
Bro your the coolest. Direct approach. No non sense like other tutorials. Plus your vibe is good. Peace
Thank you very much. This was very short, understandable and easy to apply. Loved the video!
The day you can't found new strings because the shop is closed
You'll understand that it wasn't a good idea to cut the old ones.
Very good video. Exactly what I was looking for, after decades of sloppy stringing. Thanks guys.
Also guitar with Bob I had never seen kinks so bad on the thick bass strings as with Taylor. Oh well they weren't going to come out.
@@abigailmcelroy5335 Thanks so much for the response. Really appreciate it. Keep up the great work.. 🙌

I had been changing my guitar strings the bad way all my life, thanks for this video! thumbs up
“And by disposal I mean just throwing them on the floor” 😂
"and by disposal, I mean... just throw em on the floor." hahaha that was cute :D
If your new to this like i am, I give extra slack just in case! Your first few string changes will be uncomfortable and awkward, sometimes even terrifying! Do not panic friends, trust your insticts and get er done ❤

Thank you..The best,simple video.Not picked up a guitar in years… G in AZ
Okay seriously, do not try to do this shit by hand. Spend a little bit of money and get a string winder. I'm a beginner and had to change my strings for the first time and I didn't have the proper equipment. I thought nahhh, I can do it by hand it'll be fine. By the time I had all six strings on it had taken almost two hours, I broke two brand new strings, and pricked my fingers about 4 times. Such a pain in the ass haha. That's what I get for being cheap I guess.
+Elizabeth La 2 hours?! You must have been turning reeeeeeeeeeally slow
i broke the string i was changing(d) and i took the string g and used it unstead, it works just fine and all i used was a pair of pliers
***** Lmao I was struggling I will not lie. There was also a lot of "I give up" and "I'll come back to it tomorrow"
+Elizabeth La whaat? ive been doing this for years by hand without any problem. only takes about 20 - 30 mins
***** What can I say, I've got clumsy hands haha
Update: just broke my guitar
No problem just throw it on the floor behind you
Cutting the strings seems unnecessary, is there a reason for it?
More string sales for Fender? I'd be keeping them for spares! :)
Thomas Furlan k imo, if u dont cut them its hard to take them out. cuz the top part is curly, if u pull them out from the bottom they don't really go through the hole.
Zechen Cai thanks, makes sense.
can help keep them tidy for removal instead of whipping and nicking your nice guitar finish.
don't u unwind them and get it in a straight line then pull it out? it wont be curly that way
I was just given an old guitar that did not see the light of the day in over 40 years, it was in desperate need of new strings, thanks for the vid.

Some negative comments here, but I followed the steps and I have found that I've not done a better job, of restringing an acoustic gtr, since I watched this video. Thank you.
I personally never clip strings, taking them off or putting them on, let's say one breaks and I don't have another pack on hand...well I'd be screwed, so I don't clip, so I can re use an old one if needed.
dude guitar strings are like five bucks but then again I do the same thing with old bass strings

This is an awesome video. Great job, but I also think the string stretching should be included a very important step after you've done all this, please check out other videos on how to stretch your guitar strings to break them in properly and keep them in tune.
