Great video! My partner's door whooshes up like a rocket now. One tip: If you're going to do this without a helper standing by (not advised), have a spare 4mm Allen key in your pocket....in case you drop the one in your hand as you're trying to lock off the newly-tensioned spring. Don't ask me how I know this.
I just moved the the UK from the USA, and the garage door at the new house wasn't functional. I ordered the parts and watched a few videos since the instructions that came with the kit weren't any good. I had some issues and then found this video. I'm happy to report that my garage door is now functioning as it should. Thanks very much for including all the steps necessary to tension the spring.
brilliant guide, my garage door is exactly the same, I managed to completely mess the runners up and had to pull the wires off to shut the garage door. (it was cold and late and I didn't have the mental energy to work out how to fix it) I watched this video and then in the morning came back and re-tightened the whole thing. for anyone wanting to know, mine was completely unwound. I did approx 40 half turns and it could still do with another 10 or so I reckon.
Great video Dave, thanks very much. I watched this both before and after changing a cable on a Cardale door and found that the two holes on the right did not line up laterally so had to use a thinner pin to lock it off. My door tensioning nut was not wide enough to take 2 x 22mm spanners so I had to use a mole grip to keep the tension on. The nut on the right on my door was on the outside of the pulley and plastic, unfortunately the nut was distorting when the spanner was applied so I had to get my partner to put a 22 mm spanner on the other end until I got the two holes lined up to lock it off. Good job, no waffle, no fancy music and no embarrassing special effects, appreciate your effort.
That was a very helpful video. Our garage door has never had any adjustments in 36 years. So with one of the cables breaking, now is the time to replace both cables and put the tension back so it takes the door further up than the 2 feet it has been doing up until now. Thanks very much.
The amount of skin I have taken off my knuckles trying to replace the cones and cables, then trying to retention the spring😭 You don’t know how happy Iam with your videos 😂😂😂 Thanks 👍👍👍

My mechanism is exactly the same as yours, so ordered a kit with cables, the bobbins didnt have the plastic nut on the end, but mole grips on metal bar fixed that problem, thanks
Great, informative video. My garage door (Henderson) differed slightly, but the principals as described here were exactly the same. Very good advice also regarding keeping full tension at all times on the torsion spring !!!
Looked everywhere for a video as easy as this. Explains a lot, as to why I'm having problems with mine. Mine wouldnt open tidy, as to looking at what problem was, I didn't notice this at the time but that spring grub nut was all loose on mine. I take it the door is knkrd now
thank you, my cable just snapped on one side and, I was in a panic, especially after one opening, the door was off the rails. your Videos have been really informative and bought a kit to completely fix the door. Thanks again
Hi. I am hoping that you can help me. The left wire has come off of the cone and needs to go round one more time to match the other side. I can unhook it and wind it round but then cannot physically get it back down over the roller again. The wires were only replaced 6 months ago. How can I release the tension to allow myself to wrap it around the cone and then re-tension it? I would really appreciate your help.
Hi Dave. Good video. I have to replace my wood beam that the spring is fixed to. If I lock off the spring as you showed, at both ends is it ok to remove the spring and door from existing beam and replace the beam?
Thank you very much for a life saver video, lol 😂 I did get a bit upset and constantly looking at your combat jacket and not being able to see the tensioner, however I get the jist so u are forgiven 👍👌 cheers
better to use 1 22mm spanner and 1 tommy bar its a lot easier as spanners come in different thicknesses and there not alot of room also never move spring after tightening 1 grub screw because that will create a groove in the spring shaft which means any further adjustment to spring in future could cause spring to snake because when you tension a torsion spring it gets longer and smaller diameter if you grove it it cant move across and will snake, if you do lose tension simply draw a straight chalk line on spring (some springs have this already)as you turn bars or spanners the line turns to coils, turn spring till you count about 26 coils this is average for most doors that size on bigger doors more coils
Hi there. Thank you for the video. I am trying to fix the tension on my garage door but unfortunately I can’t even insert the nail as it’s not going in. When I try to turn the nut up, the cone moves and not the part whole where the nail should go. Any suggestions. Thsnks
hi David great informative videos i have just recently acquired the same sort of garage door as you can you (second hand). Could you please tell me if there is supposed to be a pin on the none tightening side (black cone) as i cant seem to turn the cones to rotate to wind up the cable as at the moment there is a screw inserted into the hole. many thanks John
Hi do you have any advice for just moving the garage door so I can put a new frame in as old one is rotten I think I just need to release the tension first
I had to replace the cables on my door and lost tension. your video was helpful in showing how to re tension the springs.is it a 4mm Allen key to loosen the grub screws?
Hi, great video. Wish I had watched it before I tried to fix my garage door. Can you advise what is should do if both cables are to be replaced (currently not attached to the door) but I didn't take the tension in the spring before letting the cables go? Can I simply retention the spring once I have re attached the cables? I have not touched the spring as yet so have not loosed the grub screws and let any tension go from there. Hope this makes sense.. thanks in advance for any guidance you can offer
Thanks for this David, my door wasn't quite the same but it gave me some good starters. saved my bacon :) going to wander through your other videos they look very up my street. doing a garage conversion soon.

I've just moved to a house where the garage door has both wires broken,is it the wires breaking that makes all the tension go in the long spring along the top you were pre-tensioning?
Nice video with clear instruction. I had to do this once on an identical door after insulating the inside... But I had no idea you were supposed to tension it as much! Thanks for being informative. ;-)
+Olly Parry-Jones Thanks Olly, i did it as clear as I could with the hope that should any one really need this help that it would be simple enough for them
Great Video David, what happens if you are unable to put the pin into the right hand end? I’ve tried to align the holes but as I tighten the spanner the nut just slips not allowing me the chance to align the holes?
I had the same problem, it was because the end cap and the centre spindle were out of alignment. I had in the garage a small hand held fibre optic camera with an integral light. I bought it from LIDL a few years ago. Two of us moved the centre spindle very slowly into we could just see part of the hole in the spindle. Using a screwdriver to move the spindle slightly until both holes were lined up. It saved a lot of frustration and did the job. Perhaps to late this info for you
Hi David is there any way you can increase the clearance height of an up and over door? My Son in law needed to put his van in my garage but van was just a bit too high!..thanks
Cheers !... nice clear video'..Here's an idea for anyone interested.. I covered the torsion spring with a 6' length of plastic guttering... keeps all the muck and dust off the spring.. a couple of screws holds it up,.
Gotcha'.. wow that was a swift reply !! thanks !!... yes I do lots of woodwork and the sawdust clings to the oiled mechanism.. the guttering.. (flat against the wall) keeps it totally clear...Cheers from Dj.

Hi David.really informative video. Do you have any advice/video for adjusting an old up and over garage door where the springs are vertical on both sides of the door? Thanks in advance for any help. Michael.
Try as I might I can't get the pin in on the right hand side. I've twisted the bar round a full 360 and still can't find the hole. Is it possible that the bar has moved laterally?
Excellent video,I have just replaced both snapped cables on my door, just need to tension them now.any idea roughly how many turns are needed starting from scratch with no tension to full tension on the cables?
David Gladden ok thanks did a few turns earlier & tried but the cable kept coming off the cones, guess I ll have to really crank them up!! I think I lost all the tension in the spring when the cables snapped
My garage door when opened drops at one end. Looks like the wire on the spool is further over on the side that drops. Do I need to follow your tension guide or do I just need to somehow relocate the wire on the spool?
Hi if its dropping on one side i would say its unevenly spoolled maybe if thr wire on one side has drifted down, try forcing the wire on the drop side to over from the start by hand as it opens but watch your fingers, this may help balance the cables
@@dmgladden thank you for replying. I sorted it this afternoon. I used a pair of mole grip pliers to take the tension off the spool and then relocated the wire, moved it further along the spool. Pleased it worked 😀
Hi David, I've tried to insert a pin into the spring anchor clamp but cannot locate the hole (presumably because of an alignment problem). If I get another person to hold the set of locking pliers (as located in your video) would that do the same job?
Hi Tristan I guess it could work I managed to do it alone but as you say if it's not aligning for you then you need to try anything to get it in, anyway good luck and thanks for watching
Hi David, pleased to find your video on this. I had to remove both cables on a Merlin Mk 2 door after one snapped. I have a kit on it's way for £12 from ebay. I watched your other video on replacing cones, do I replace the cable and cones and then just wind all the tension up or wind tension up and then fit cable and cones? Many thanks
Love the videos David. I have a 30 year old Cardale door. A local fitter has replaced spindles and cables but he couldn't work out how to re-tension the spring. Tightening it resulted in the spring unscrewing itself from the housing. And tightening it the other way seems to result in the bar turning the opposite way than is needed. Is there a special technique to re-tension a Cardale door?
Hello can you help identify the part that you are pointing to at 2:22 in your video as the thread on it that the grub screws into have gone on mine and i need to replace ? and does any 1 kno where i might source just that tension nut on its own please ?
Hi Stephen I'm sorry but I can't I'm no expert in this I just show how I did mine after working it out I would guess talking to a garage door fitting company might help
@@dmgladden thanks for the reply David ended up having to get garage repair man in tomoro seems hes gunna drill thru tension nut and bar then put pin thru it but cant see how he guna variable the tension ..we shall see
My door look similar but is a Chamberlain- about thirty years old. Broken cable on right side. I don't see Chamberlain available on eBay or Amazon. Will similar cones and cables be ok?
my garage door opens half way and then gets really heavy and you have to really push it up.......is this what i need to do? thanks for youe helpful video!
Hi nice video. I was wondering what is the best way to remove this door in order to preserve it for someone else? I am replacing with a roller door. Concerned about the spring. Thanks.
David Gladden thanks for the reply. So to do that, all I need to do is put an Allen key or similar into the hole to the right of the top bar? And then I can disassemble everything?
yes just the two on the ends and make sure you keep control of it as you loosen them it is very powerful and if it goes you will need to replace it possibly the whole door
Hi wolf I have never tried but the book says no, all I can say is if it happened to me I would try find away but I can imagine it would be dangerous. Not much I can say maybe take the complete bar to a door centre and ask if they can do it
I have the same garage door but it opens too fast so I think I should do the opposite loosening rather than tightening. I am wondering how the previous owner has done that?
Thanks the garage door was blocked up with two 3/4 inch eight by four sheets since 1997 and I took away the sheets and the door won't go up all the way this I am sure will sort out the door not rising THANKS .
Thanks for this David,. You have explained very well what I needed to do, as well as why. Unfortunately, my door cables both broke, meaning the spring lost all of its tension, rendering the door useless. After fitting new cones and cables, it was just a matter of pining the bar to stop it rotating, then slackening the Allen screws at the other end and turning the nut anticlockwise until there was sufficient tension back in the spring. It was easy to know how far to tension, as the bar was shiny beneath where the tensioned spring had previously sat. In all it cost me £10 for the parts and it took three hours to fix (I had to free the top brackets, one at a time to get the cones off, due to a tight-fitting door recess) . I wonder what a trade might have charged?!
The road to discovery that's what its all about, well done i will pass your experience on when the next person tells me they have lost all the tension, as I've never tried it and told it was impossible but now you show us it is possible thank you
I tried this on the Regent Prima door. Access to the two grub screws is restricted on this door, a major design error. Actually this grub screw adjustment is an example of PPD; Piss Poor Deesign. What sensible designer lets this strong spring tension rely on just two grubs crews!? Not your fault David but your right arm did obscure the vital adjusment which is the key process. Incidently, how many turns did you do?
Firebrand55 i didn't find access an issue at all, but i haven't had to adjust it before this was the first time in 16 years so i would think that makes it quite a reliable model, as for how many turns to be honest i didn't count its more a case of as many as it take to get the do to perform as you want it to
Joe Duncan Hi Joe sorry mate I don't actually deal with them ive just fit a few in my course of duty I've never bought parts but I would guess a good dealer should stock them or know where to get them, sorry couldn't be of more help
David Gladden ... thanks David, I've spoke to a company & sent photos to them (only based in Ormskirk so local to me in Atherton) just waiting on them getting back to me... thanks again Joe... P.S. How many videos have you done?
Joe Duncan sounds good there's a lot of types out there but let's hope your lucky and they will find you one, I have so far done 222 video's but with the new drone this number is likely to increase very quickly
222, thats pretty amazing, i watch youtube videos for everything from rotisserie chicken to garaged doors, lofts and even fencing have learned so much was thinking of doing some videos myself (giving a bit back to the community) wasn't sure where to start, camera etc? have you got any tips?
Joe Duncan I started when doing the campervan I just wanted to make a video record of what I had done, but then wanted to show family which is why I posted on TH-cam then I found people were interested so I carried on
Hi Andrew that one is beyond me I do make it clear in the video not to let this happen as as far as I know nothing can be done but maybe if you contact a garage door centre they may shed some light on a easy fix if there is one
No I didn't do a video of removing but the process is the same as adjusting, you just need to lock the spring on both sides then you can undo every thing, if you watch my fitting a garage door video and reverse it
@@peterryan7827 best release all the tension in the spring first, referencing David's procedure but wind the spanners downwards. Then unscrew the top brackets so the swinging arms are loose. Get a second person to support the door whilst you are doing this. Then unscrew the sections at each side of the door so the door's side pivots are no longer held. Hold the door with someone on the inside and someone on the outside. Turn it sideways and walk the door away from the garage door frame. Measure, take photos and put it on Ebay.

@@dmgladden thanks for the reply David ended up having to get garage repair man in tomoro seems hes gunna drill thru tension nut and bar then put pin thru it but cant see how he guna variable the tension ..we shall see
@@stephenwarren6539 hi thanks for the info please let me know if the pin idea works, would be useful to know
@@dmgladden yep they came round and done as above but i dunno how they knew wen tension was correct i guess just thru experience
If you loose tension can you just re tension the spring again ?
Great wee video, appreciate you taking the time, helped a lot.Thx
Alan Seaton your very welcome I'm glad to be of some help
Do you need to take techno off to replace cables
Hi Robert first thanks for the kind words, as for the tension to be honest don't know, i did just out of caution but it might be possible without
Hi I am tensioning mine but only the left side is tensioning the right is not spooling any ideas?
My door look similar but is a Chamberlain- about thirty years old. Broken cable on right side. I don't see Chamberlain available on eBay or Amazon. Will similar cones and cables be ok?
Hi David sorry but i don't have a clue
Discovered it’s a Henderson. Just £9.25 for cones and cables. garagedoorpartsuk
@@davidk3729 hi David well done, you do as i do search and research it works in the end
When replacing the cones and cables after IV had a cable snap do I do this process with the spring first before I fit the new cones or after
Yes that's correct
@@dmgladden thank you bud my cable snapped today ,,IV just ordered the parts so I will be using both of your videos as a guid , top videos bud 👍
@@roostaraver your welcome, glad I could help
my garage door opens half way and then gets really heavy and you have to really push it up.......is this what i need to do? thanks for youe helpful video!
Gavin Prosser I've had the same issue, you need to carry on tensioning it.
kotm3 I couldn't hold the pressure any more...
Hi Gavin sorry for slow reply but Kotm3 is correct you just need to keep adding more tension than it will get lighter as you go
David Gladden thanks. It's a lot better than it was but my nut is so slim it's hard to get two spanners on it
maybe you could use a couple of bike spanners they are very slim
Hi nice video. I was wondering what is the best way to remove this door in order to preserve it for someone else? I am replacing with a roller door. Concerned about the spring. Thanks.
Rusty Bee i would lock the springs in place so you can disconect the door from the top and it will be ready to just connect at the other location
David Gladden thanks for the reply. So to do that, all I need to do is put an Allen key or similar into the hole to the right of the top bar? And then I can disassemble everything?
Rusty Bee yes what ever fits even a big nail but be sure its got the pressure before you begin to dismantle
David Gladden thanks, appreciate the help. Good videos btw 👍
garage doors should not go to the fully open position on its own accord ¾ of the way with a gentle push also try oiling the thing !
Hi David, do you have a video showing replacement of the rollers on this door. Mine have flattened and slide rather than roll.
No sorry not had that problem "yet"
Hi David on the tenoning side you have three grub screws. Two on the ends and one in the middle. Do we just loosen the ones on the side and tighten.
yes just the two on the ends and make sure you keep control of it as you loosen them it is very powerful and if it goes you will need to replace it possibly the whole door
So when I'm replacing both cones and cables how much tension should I remove and do I then remove both cones when everything is locked in place
Don't remove the tension just lock it and I would do one side at a time
How long would this whole job take from start to finish including dismantling door new timber frame and re fit door ?
riptarn within one day
David Gladden thank you pal, got just the job to do myself 👍🏻
Hi David. Had a disaster on a caredale ,spring has unwound my mistake. Is there a way to retension?
Hi wolf I have never tried but the book says no, all I can say is if it happened to me I would try find away but I can imagine it would be dangerous. Not much I can say maybe take the complete bar to a door centre and ask if they can do it
Thanks for your really helpful guide. All sorted now.
I have the same garage door but it opens too fast so I think I should do the opposite loosening rather than tightening. I am wondering how the previous owner has done that?
Hi yes it is set to tight so just reverse the operation
Great easy to understand video many thanks
Your welcome Chris
Thanks David. This was really useful.
Very welcome
Does this work for one that’s completely out of tension??
yes you just have to turn more times
Very helpful. Thanks
Paul Yates Your welcome
Firebrand55 i didn't find access an issue at all, but i haven't had to adjust it before this was the first time in 16 years so i would think that makes it quite a reliable model, as for how many turns to be honest i didn't count its more a case of as many as it take to get the do to perform as you want it to
Hi David, great video, can you advise where to get a bar / spring kit, my bar that goes through the spring snapped at the weekend? Thanks... joe...
Joe Duncan I started when doing the campervan I just wanted to make a video record of what I had done, but then wanted to show family which is why I posted on TH-cam then I found people were interested so I carried on
Ah ok, thanks for getting back to me David I’ll let him know what you said😊
Great video. Well explained. Cheers David
Super video...really intelligently produced and to the point. Just the ticket! Thank you very much.

Thank you Noacks for a great comment
Thanks for this, worked a treat’
I have lost all the tension on the main spring what can I do?
Hi Andrew that one is beyond me I do make it clear in the video not to let this happen as as far as I know nothing can be done but maybe if you contact a garage door centre they may shed some light on a easy fix if there is one
Keep winding it until there's enough tension back on it? I read somewhere around 26 turns.
@@dmgladden i no im an idiot
@@andrewhobson3465 not an idiot just on a learning curve we've all been there
Super video - just what I need as my garage door needs lifting to open and comes down by itself in wind
Glad to help
I need to see how to remove this garage door , safely have you a video on this, as we are going to convert the garage into a pool room.
No I didn't do a video of removing but the process is the same as adjusting, you just need to lock the spring on both sides then you can undo every thing, if you watch my fitting a garage door video and reverse it
@@dmgladden Many thanks i will watch it over again being careful cheers pete
@@peterryan7827 best release all the tension in the spring first, referencing David's procedure but wind the spanners downwards. Then unscrew the top brackets so the swinging arms are loose. Get a second person to support the door whilst you are doing this. Then unscrew the sections at each side of the door so the door's side pivots are no longer held. Hold the door with someone on the inside and someone on the outside. Turn it sideways and walk the door away from the garage door frame. Measure, take photos and put it on Ebay.
@@chrissilk341 Thanks so much for this i will read this and re-read,it cheers Pete from Newark Notts
You made that look easy. This will be a nightmare in reality for me.
Have faith, take your time and you will see it is as easy as it looks, getting the pin in is the hardest part
@@dmgladden Jesus Christ you weren't kidding. I thought getting it out was hard, but getting a new one in is twice as hard 💀
excellent clear instructions. Many thanks for posting.

Excellent vid, thank you
Where can I order the empty Garage? Mines so full I can't get inside the closed door!
Just have some one build you another
Used this video to fix mine, so cheers for that👍only thing I did wrong was I used a crappy old shifter instead of a proper spanner, bloody thing slipped amd the spring unwound, jesus it was like a feckin bomb going off😱😂
Looks like my door does not have a wide enough "nut" to put 2 spanners on it unfortunately. Nice video though.
can still do it with one spanner? just be a bit longer...
I have done mine before but it was a long time ago so it was nice to see a video of how it's done just to refresh my memory! ☺️
Very good explanation
Brilliant, very useful, thanks 👍
Great video thanks, also a good spin after the testing !
