They probably got him because he was the cutest fluffiest baby dog but had no idea what he would grow into. Not a one of them has the right energy because they all seemed timid and scared. Glad they knew enough and cared enough to find a better situation for him.

I've always admired the size and power of the Caucasian Shepherd and how devoted they can be to there families BUT I ALDO acknowledge how much training, I myself will need around them to fully understand how to raise them. These dogs ate not friendly to outsiders NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU WORK WITH THEM. They are devoted to the one they know within the home and that is it.
My grandfather had one of these. Very very loyale but HIGHLY territorial and suspicios to strangers....thats being nice. The dog did not like anybody but my grandparents. But that’s how my grandfather wanted it to be. Mind you he lived on the country side. Nobody is tresspassing on his property I promise you that.
This dog is literally got another chance at life that many others probably do not, and with an experienced handler at that. Super excited to see where this goes!
Thouse DOgs need that they owner os Alpha model , a master, not a friend. They repecy authority and powe and are most happy on thouse condisions. If owner is insecure then they might decide they are the alpha. Owner needs to be strict but not abusive.
Put this dog outside your house at all cost this dog with another dog if the same species are meent to protect sheeps from bears and wolves not to be a housepet

What I immediately notice was JAMES becoming relaxed in your hands! He desperately needed direction and leadership..poor puppy..he will be fine..I'm 💯 positive
People need to do their homework before just getting a dog bc it looks cool etc. Glad he's with someone who can properly train him etc and live a good life. He's a beautiful dog, look forward to seeing him be trained and mature.

@@lavonnealexander6936 no definitely not a good breed for first time dog owners & not for someone that doesn't have land & livestock for it to do what they were bred for originally. There are exceptions with all things, dogs included but livestock guardian breeds aren't recommended for "house pets", first time dog owners etc. There are a lot of great breeds that are better suited for that situation etc. Just my opinion, but I think most experienced dog owners & responsible breeders would agree on. If you had the land & livestock etc then got the dog as a puppy & had the thousands of dollars & around 18-24 months of free time to get a responsible professional trainer to work with daily showing you what/how to raise it properly then maybe that's the exception but even then probably not a great idea to be fair for you or the dog.
He doesn't even seem too bad - he almost had that puppy-hop thing going when you had him on the catch pole. Very beautiful dog! I can't wait to see his progress! .... and I vote for Kyle 😂
To be fair ... he is just a pup, but a pup with a bad past sadly. Usually livestock guardian breeds are really into biting and attacking any stranger (human or animal) straight from 3 months of age or so, independently speaking (not with their siblings) and he was just fearful and reactive due to that. So can't wait to see the progress of his training and becoming something that he should be from the start.
Thank you so much for saving this dog's life, because that is EXACTLY what you've done. So many people have absolutely no idea about dog breeds, what they're bred for. They purchase a pup because it's the trend (like my neighbors and their goldendoodle that nearly takes the wife off her feet), the neighbors or friends advised them, etc. Then, when the dog is too much to handle and doesn't work out, it gets rehomed if lucky, or worse, goes to a shelter. And if there's a bite history, then it's rescue organizations only that can take the dog, or the dog's at the top of the euth list.
Before the internet my friend went to Russia as an exchange engineer to share knowledge on power stations, whilst there he stayed with a family for just over a year who kept these beautiful dogs, he’d brought back photos of them, I fell in love with the breed, I had a farm in those days and tried desperately to try and get a pair to bring over but the cost and paperwork was crazy. This was before the internet and learning of foreign breeds was done in a library. I’d never seen such a dog before, these days though they can be found, the breed watered down and roaming about a small backyard, no longer protecting livestock and fulfilling their potential. I don’t live on a farm anymore so I will never own such a majestic beast. Instead I have two Shepherds who protect and play with the family, I adore them both but I will always wish I could of owned these dogs when I had the farm. Glad to see this dog in the hands of someone with knowledge and not tied up in some crappy yard, hats off to you sir! 👍🏻
So excited about this! I have 8 LGDs and breed my own line. They’re definitely just babies for the first 2 years then at 3 years it finally clicks and they mature into their roll but you definitely need to set the foundation and they need a job to do. Sure you can raise one to cuddle but if there’s no balance of working/guarding they will become a mess and or depressed

I live in a small city in Scotland and my walk to work involves walking past an ovcharkas house. Work on golf course and met the dog couple times with the owner of course haha. Wasn't interested in me really but didn't show any concern. I said hello and went bout my day. Met again and same thing not much interest. One day walking home I noticed he was out with owner but they had a friend and 2 kids with her. I crossed the rd and thought il just wave hello on way past. I own a Tibetan mastiff x rottie so used to big breeds, anyway walking down other side of rd it noticed me. I kept walking then all of a sudden it came charging towards me barking . I stood still and it got to me and circled me with small growls. The owner came over and it settled and he accepted me although when I petted him he growled a little. But his owner has shown him I'm no threat but he still was unsure and made sure I knew that. The owner did say thank god it was you haha so even with good control if this animal perceived threat it is capable of deciding on its own what to do. It's in the DNA of these animals.

Oh my God Haz, you didn't!! I'm gonna sound like a softy, but these dogs can be soo darling. Years ago I found one in one of the neighborhoods I used to ride in. Didn't know the breed back then, we later found out he was getting out from a large property he was guarding and was likely looking to breed. I walked up to him and put a horse's lead rope on his collar, super mellow guy. We scanned him for a microchip and got his owner's info. In the time it took the owner to come get him a bunch of us sat around on the porch with him - just enjoying his company and presence. We did not want to give him back :) The owner told us what breed he was and gave us a little bit of a history on the pup. I have a feeling James is going to become a staff favorite. Definitely look forward to seeing his progress.
Glad you made this video! I think it's so important to talk about breed specific behaviour and livestock guarding breeds in particular. There's always this notion that it's all on the owners and that any dog can be a lovely, social golden retriever if it's been properly socialised and trained. Which is just ridiculous and implies that humans did a terrible, pointless job breeding dogs for a specific pupose in the first place. The difficulty with livestock guarding dogs, apart from them being bred for thousands of years to be suspicious of strangers and to guard, it that they've been bred to think independently. They've not been bred to work with and alongside people, but they work alone. They grow up with their flock and instinctively know to protect their flock - no training required, it's just what they are naturally wired to do. We have a rescue that turned out to be mostly Kuvasz. Living in the UK and certainly not in the middle of nowhere, it has been quite difficult at times. Also because I was under the assumption, as a terribly uninformed first time dog owner (he was a puppy when we rescued him) that with love, training and socialisation he'd be your average, off-lead, run of the mill pooch. He isn't, but learning about his breed made us appreciate the dog we have and as scary as he is to strangers, especially those that come close to the house, he's a soft goofball with us and our child 💞 I've become so used to feeling super safe with him in our house I can honestly say I wouldn't change him for the world.

Such a beautiful boy. Glad you were able to take him in. I hate seeing people adopt a dog because they like they way the dog looks. I tell my friends to decide what they want the dog for, and then adopt an appropriate breed. They usually don't listen.
Wow, how on earth did those girls manage to get themselves a dog like that? What a disaster. When I got my Cane Corso, I understood that if I didn't level up my training considerably and failed the dog, she would have to be confined to the property. It turned out fine, we both love training, she listens really well and is a breeze to take to the beach or dog park. She's terrifying at the border and I don't expect her to be the life of the party, she's bred to be a bodyguard, but I do expect her to behave and she does. I put loads of work in, I learnt so much from her, it's been a great experience. I'm not sure I could do this with your amazing baby monster - limitations!
You would be surprised, I know a family that can't handle a labrador (yes, a labrador), and they (well, the husband) had the idea of getting a cane corso. I told her honestly that that if they do that, she can start to write her and her 10yo daughters will, because that is pretty much a death sentence considering their inability to even properly raise one of the easier dog breeds. For now it seems like they gave up on the idea, but this is not an isolated case, I see people with out of control dogs everywhere, usually with pitbulls or dobermans, because getting a golden retriever is just not cool enough.
Yes out of control dogs/humans are everywhere. AS an owner you have to prove yourself with dogs before levelling up. I'd like a Boerboel but I'll probably never get there. Should have started earlier !
He’s wonderful. He doing what is natural to him. I would never blame the pup for doing what he’s been breed to do. Glad they knew it was too much for them and rehomed him to someone who could really take care of him.
I’m no expert but from the 1st second you can see the dog is actually scared. He keep backing down and trying to shield once he sees him coming back. You can see immediately he is a puppy with puppy behavior (albeit a fucking strong one).
Thank you for adopting your cane Corso I know that they are not a dog for just any one they require so much training and socializing them,I love my cane Corso and my Presa canerio I couldn't imagine my dog's acting that aggressive, I got my puppies from great breeders and I have them in protection work and doggy daycare twice a week and I have a gym membership I take my dog's to a dog friendly gym with me so they can get more socialized and desensitized around other dogs and people I even put on the iPad for them with sounds of thunder Storms and war videos so they could hear the sounds of gun fire and bombs going off and I put on fire cracker videos and videos with different sirens from police and ambulance and fire trucks, I know it couldn't be easy to get a cane Corso turned around but I believe it can be done with the right understanding of the dog and alot of training and socializing it ,it would not be a over night fix but with alot of denication it can be done if I can ever adopt a mastiff I want to do it and I don't care how much money it will cost me for a great trainer to help me I believe dogs can get turned around they just need the right owners to help them
A friend has a large farm and uses Kengals, Great Pyrenees and Kuvasz as guardians of his flocks. Has for about 20 yrs. He and his wife have no problems working with them. But strangers-totally different story!! He has yet to loose one of his livestock to a predator animal or human.
I had a Tibetan mastiff that I raised from a pup when I was 11. I took him to town and around people to socialize him so that he would be adjusted to meeting people. My mom and I couldn’t wrestle the same because he’d be concerned. When he was somewhere around 7-9months old I caught him with paws on the kitchen counter eating and gave him an aggressive “no”. He didn’t know I was there and was surprised and wanted to eat what he wanted do he turned around and growled at me so I quickly pinned him to the ground to let him know I was alpha and that his behavior was not acceptable. Neither of us hurt. I had to do this one other time during his juvenile age and after that he was only the best dog. It is so important to raise large guard breed properly; be in charge and caring and make fire what is expected of them is communicated to the clearly. My TMs name was Granite (a lot better than James 😉) At age 6 or about he went blind. I don’t know when exactly because he didn’t change or run into anything or have any trouble with stairs. You couldn’t tell by looking at him and nobody else ever knew unless we told them. I miss him so much! He was the best dog! I’m considering another Tibetan Mastiff or a Caucasian Shepherd. I love TMs but will also be getting herd animals that need guarding. Hmmm. I also had a Great Pyrenees that I rescued as an adult dog when my TM was a year. He was an awesome dog and had lived rather wild but all he wanted to do was guard the territory at night. He was such a natural. And the 2 got along well. I’m trying to figure out which breed will be best suited for the life and if I will get more than one dog and if they will be the same or different breeds.
“It was my dad’s fault”. This type of people are looking for a baby; not a “real dog breed”. Don’t play love story with a pit or Caucasian. Do that with a golden, lady!
Funny you say that, I own shepherds and head and shoulders above the rest the golden retrievers are without question the most aggressive towards them 🤷♂️
We have an ovcharka and a tibetan mastiff. Many many many hours of work to get both of them polite in public. Granted, my ovcharka is also still a puppy but it takes a lot of hours during the first years so he understands he doesn't need to be obnoxious in public. Granted, both dogs are completely different animals on my property doing their job, and they are excellent at property protection. Id be curious to know his breeder- theres 2 lines of caucasian out there these days. Livestock and more property protection/man stopper lines
They did the right thing, knowing James needed a better fit. Breeders should be more responsible when selecting/screening buyers. Wonder how the litter mates are doing🤔
I have one, 2nd owner she’s Caucasian/yellow lab. Beauty She’s had issues, but she’s a big baby. Very protective, but will give a chance to friends. I love her.
I love this breed, you have to be a type of person to own them though they are a massive handful you can’t be a pushover you have to be a calm confident and assertive leader. They require lifelong training and a very firm hand, you cannot discipline them you have to use positive reinforcement, remember you’re a human being you are smarter than them. Get them to learn an area that is theirs to patrol and guard and teach them proper etiquette around strangers! This breed absolutely lives and dies to please their owner.
He is rather sweet and easy, not agressive at all. At 11 months they test boundaries and stop being puppies. And he was not able to learn from elder dogs. So an owners issue, lgd should not be alone.
I agree. Working together within their pack with elder dogs on the range guarding livestock is what fulfills their potential. They live outside and may be gone birthing a litter and return when instinct tells them.
@mary-ue4ir They are not very good LGDs. If you are using them as such. There are any number of breeds that are far superior in this role. Also, why would you allow expectant mothers to live feral. If they are birting a litter and caring for pups, they are not concerned with tasks. In fact will at that point view ANY animal, including livestock as a potential threat to the pups and kill the other animal. Not very smart. My assumption is you do not have much expertise working flocks and dogs. If you did you would know that these dogs were not bred for this purpose and were not meant for such tasks. Original intent and breeding program out of the Soviet state kennel was for military and police work. Get Pyrenees, a Kuvasz, Maremma, Komondor. And treat yourself to an animal purposely developed and bred for centuries for such work.or if you like the looks of the Ovcharka give a Sarplaninac or two a whirl. If you can get one. Not an easy breed to get. Unfortunately. Or take time and speak with the herdsmen of your country. Most real shepherds here in the US, that I know, work herds in the central mountain states and use almost exclusively Pyrenees in packs with Boarder Collies as herders. Not telling you your choice is wrong, simply that there a breeds which are very well developed and honed for such work.

On another note, in a video from a few years ago, you said that the American Pitbull Terrier has not the right temperament for a personal protection dog (PPD). I do not doubt your assertion. However, if he had the right temperament, would his weight (around 50 lbs) be enough for a PPD? More generally, what, do you think, is the minimum weight of a PPD? Thank you for your explantion, he is a beautiful dog, he wants to have a job, i use guardian breeds for my herds of sheep and goats. 3 are dogs I gad to rescue from navice owners who did not know how to handle tge breed. They thought they would make a "fun" pet! These dogs are wonderful with their herds, my grqndchildren can handle these dogs while they are with tge herds. Youngest grand child is 5 oldest 18. Enjoy your new dog.

yes, he will bite you. This dog is not a labrador. Please, understand that this dog loves only his own family. If you have this one, nobody can come to your home. This dog belongs to mountains and not a small yard or apartment. Do not get it if you can't take care of him.

Give him to Caesar Milan. He has a ton of room for James the giant puppy to run and play. Plus... he'll have a forever home. It's sad that he's been handed off so many times at a young age, and I'd hate to think this could be a trend for poor James. Please keep us updated on how James is doing. Glad you made this video! I think it's so important to talk about breed specific behaviour and livestock guarding breeds in particular. There's always this notion that it's all on the owners and that any dog can be a lovely, social golden retriever if it's been properly socialised and trained. Which is just ridiculous and implies that humans did a terrible, pointless job breeding dogs for a specific pupose in the first place. The difficulty with livestock guarding dogs, apart from them being bred for thousands of years to be suspicious of strangers and to guard, it that they've been bred to think independently. They've not been bred to work with and alongside people, but they work alone. They grow up with their flock and instinctively know to protect their flock - no training required, it's just what they are naturally wired to do. We have a rescue that turned out to be mostly Kuvasz. Living in the UK and certainly not in the middle of nowhere, it has been quite difficult at times. Also because I was under the assumption, as a terribly uninformed first time dog owner (he was a puppy when we rescued him) that with love, training and socialisation he'd be your average, off-lead, run of the mill pooch. He isn't, but learning about his breed made us appreciate the dog we have and as scary as he is to strangers, especially those that come close to the house, he's a soft goofball with us and our child 💞 I've become so used to feeling super safe with him in our house I can honestly say I wouldn't change him for the world.

Such a beautiful boy. Glad you were able to take him in. I hate seeing people adopt a dog because they like they way the dog looks. I tell my friends to decide what they want the dog for, and then adopt an appropriate breed. They usually don't listen.

When I got my Cane Corso, I understood that if I didn't level up my training considerably and failed the dog, she would have to be confined to the property. It turned out fine, we both love training, she listens really well and is a breeze to take to the beach or dog park. She's terrifying at the border and I don't expect her to be the life of the party, she's bred to be a bodyguard, but I do expect her to behave and she does. I put loads of work in, I learnt so much from her, it's been a great experience. I'm not sure I could do this with your amazing baby monster - limitations!
You would be surprised, I know a family that can't handle a labrador (yes, a labrador), and they (well, the husband) had the idea of getting a cane corso. I told her honestly that that if they do that, she can start to write her and her 10yo daughters will, because that is pretty much a death sentence considering their inability to even properly raise one of the easier dog breeds. For now it seems like they gave up on the idea, but this is not an isolated case, I see people with out of control dogs everywhere, usually with pitbulls or dobermans, because getting a golden retriever is just not cool enough.
Yes out of control dogs/humans are everywhere. AS an owner you have to prove yourself with dogs before levelling up. I'd like a Boerboel but I'll probably never get there. Should have started earlier !
He’s wonderful. He doing what is natural to him. I would never blame the pup for doing what he’s been breed to do. Glad they knew it was too much for them and rehomed him to someone who could really take care of him.

I’m no expert but from the 1st second you can see the dog is actually scared. He keep backing down and trying to shield once he sees him coming back. You can see immediately he is a puppy with puppy behavior (albeit a fucking strong one).

Thank you for adopting your cane Corso I know that they are not a dog for just any one they require so much training and socializing them,I love my cane Corso and my Presa canerio I couldn't imagine my dog's acting that aggressive, I got my puppies from great breeders and I have them in protection work and doggy daycare twice a week and I have a gym membership I take my dog's to a dog friendly gym with me so they can get more socialized and desensitized around other dogs and people I even put on the iPad for them with sounds of thunder Storms and war videos so they could hear the sounds of gun fire and bombs going off and I put on fire cracker videos and videos with different sirens from police and ambulance and fire trucks, I know it couldn't be easy to get a cane Corso turned around but I believe it can be done with the right understanding of the dog and alot of training and socializing it ,it would not be a over night fix but with alot of denication it can be done if I can ever adopt a mastiff I want to do it and I don't care how much money it will cost me for a great trainer to help me I believe dogs can get turned around they just need the right owners to help them

A friend has a large farm and uses Kengals, Great Pyrenees and Kuvasz as guardians of his flocks. Has for about 20 yrs. He and his wife have no problems working with them.
But strangers-totally different story!!
He has yet to loose one of his livestock to a predator animal or human.

Wow, this guy really knows (and loves) dogs! I would say, a very honest review with respect to the breed.
I've unfortunately only had the pleasure of meeting one of these dogs. Their sheer size, and temperament is both impressive and somewhat intimidating.
I had a Tibetan mastiff that I raised from a pup when I was 11. I took him to town and around people to socialize him so that he would be adjusted to meeting people. My mom and I couldn’t wrestle the same because he’d be concerned. When he was somewhere around 7-9months old I caught him with paws on the kitchen counter eating and gave him an aggressive “no”. He didn’t know I was there and was surprised and wanted to eat what he wanted do he turned around and growled at me so I quickly pinned him to the ground to let him know I was alpha and that his behavior was not acceptable. Neither of us hurt. I had to do this one other time during his juvenile age and after that he was only the best dog. It is so important to raise large guard breed properly; be in charge and caring and make fire what is expected of them is communicated to the clearly. My TMs name was Granite (a lot better than James 😉)
At age 6 or about he went blind. I don’t know when exactly because he didn’t change or run into anything or have any trouble with stairs. You couldn’t tell by looking at him and nobody else ever knew unless we told them. I miss him so much! He was the best dog! I’m considering another Tibetan Mastiff or a Caucasian Shepherd. I love TMs but will also be getting herd animals that need guarding. Hmmm.
I also had a Great Pyrenees that I rescued as an adult dog when my TM was a year. He was an awesome dog and had lived rather wild but all he wanted to do was guard the territory at night. He was such a natural. And the 2 got along well. I’m trying to figure out which breed will be best suited for the life and if I will get more than one dog and if they will be the same or different breeds.
“It was my dad’s fault”. This type of people are looking for a baby; not a “real dog breed”. Don’t play love story with a pit or Caucasian. Do that with a golden, lady!

Funny you say that, I own shepherds and head and shoulders above the rest the golden retrievers are without question the most aggressive towards them 🤷♂️

We have an ovcharka and a tibetan mastiff. Many many many hours of work to get both of them polite in public. Granted, my ovcharka is also still a puppy but it takes a lot of hours during the first years so he understands he doesn't need to be obnoxious in public.
Granted, both dogs are completely different animals on my property doing their job, and they are excellent at property protection.
Id be curious to know his breeder- theres 2 lines of caucasian out there these days. Livestock and more property protection/man stopper lines

They did the right thing, knowing James needed a better fit. Breeders should be more responsible when selecting/screening buyers. Wonder how the litter mates are doing🤔
The buyer also needs to research the dog they plan to spend thousands on.

I love this breed, you have to be a type of person to own them though they are a massive handful you can’t be a pushover you have to be a calm confident and assertive leader.
They require lifelong training and a very firm hand, you cannot discipline them you have to use positive reinforcement, remember you’re a human being you are smarter than them. Get them to learn an area that is theirs to patrol and guard and teach them proper etiquette around strangers!
This breed absolutely lives and dies to please their owner.

He is rather sweet and easy, not agressive at all. At 11 months they test boundaries and stop being puppies. And he was not able to learn from elder dogs. So an owners issue, lgd should not be alone.
I agree. Working together within their pack with elder dogs on the range guarding livestock is what fulfills their potential. They live outside and may be gone birthing a litter and return when instinct tells them.

They are not very good LGDs. If you are using them as such. There are any number of breeds that are far superior in this role. Also, why would you allow expectant mothers to live feral. If they are birting a litter and caring for pups, they are not concerned with tasks. In fact will at that point view ANY animal, including livestock as a potential threat to the pups and kill the other animal. Not very smart. My assumption is you do not have much expertise working flocks and dogs. If you did you would know that these dogs were not bred for this purpose and were not meant for such tasks. Original intent and breeding program out of the Soviet state kennel was for military and police work. Get Pyrenees, a Kuvasz, Maremma, Komondor. And treat yourself to an animal purposely developed and bred for centuries for such work.or if you like the looks of the Ovcharka give a Sarplaninac or two a whirl. If you can get one. Not an easy breed to get. Unfortunately. Or take time and speak with the herdsmen of your country. Most real shepherds here in the US, that I know, work herds in the central mountain states and use almost exclusively Pyrenees in packs with Boarder Collies as herders. Not telling you your choice is wrong, simply that there a breeds which are very well developed and honed for such work.

On another note, in a video from a few years ago, you said that the American Pitbull Terrier has not the right temperament for a personal protection dog (PPD).
I do not doubt your assertion. However, if he had the right temperament, would his weight (around 50 lbs) be enough for a PPD? More generally, what, do you think, is the minimum weight of a PPD?

Thank you for your explantion, he is a beautiful dog, he wants to have a job, i use guardian breeds for my herds of sheep and goats. 3 are dogs I gad to rescue from navice owners who did not know how to handle tge breed. They thought they would make a "fun" pet! These dogs are wonderful with their herds, my grqndchildren can handle these dogs while they are with tge herds. Youngest grand child is 5 oldest 18. Enjoy your new dog.

yes, he will bite you. This dog is not a labrador. Please, understand that this dog loves only his own family. If you have this one, nobody can come to your home. This dog belongs to mountains and not a small yard or apartment. Do not get it if you can't take care of him.

Give him to Caesar Milan. He has a ton of room for James the giant puppy to run and play. Plus... he'll have a forever home. It's sad that he's been handed off so many times at a young age, and I'd hate to think this could be a trend for poor James. Please keep us updated on how James is doing.
