@@franceelle3560 C'est merde. The original is better recorded and features the singing of the matchless MARNIE NIXON. Not to mention the bowdlerized shite that's been inserted.
@@MFTH-cam683 This sucks; the instruments sound weaker because there's too much reverb and the singing isn't as good. THE ORIGINAL SHITS ON THIS. It sounds gutless.
I love how you can tell what’s happening by the music. Every musical tells a story, and West Side Story is no exception. Though I do enjoy originals more than remade movies, I found myself loving this even more than the 1960s version. The musicians did so well, I hope they’re damn well proud of themselves.
Haven't seen the movie yet, but I love how the singing sounds like the singing on the original movie soundtrack. There's an effect...reverb or something that gives it a feeling of an old recording.
Based on "Romeo & Juliet" [forbidden love] this film brings that into the modern world. It was way ahead of it's time and a truly magnificent production, action and singing, I liked it so much that I saw it three times in a single week at my local cinema. The fav of mine being "America" an incredible scene. Love it.
A great film and a great soundtrack. The original film had the singing dubbed for the actors. Phony. The new film has the actors actually singing their own songs. Real. And most of the actors are also professional singers, many who have sung in Broadway musicals.
For the ultimate record version, listen to Bernstein's (double)album from 1985(recorded in '84) with José Carreras as Tony and Kiri Te Kanawa as Maria. It was released by Deutsche Gramophonen.
As a devout fan of the old, original 1961 film version of West Side Story, I listened to the soundtrack to the 2021 film version of West Side Story, and I was not impressed. On the whole, the musical score is very metallic-sounding and flat in many places, and the singing voices, including those of Ansen Elgort and Rachel Zegler were too far back, Ziegler's voice was often too far back in her throat and/or too nasal, and she frequently went flat on the higher notes. I have not seen the reboot/remake of the film version of West Side Story, but have no intention of doing so. Also the stuff that came out about Ansel Elgort (i. e. the grooming and sexually assaulting of underaged girls), has also stiffened my resolve to vote my pocketbook and not go to see it, at all.
I like the first film, but the fact that Maria and Tony were both dubbed makes it flawed. This new version has all the parts being sung by the actors. And it isn't phony. And the acting in the new film is superb. The soundtrack is great, because the music is performed by the New York Philharmonic instead of a studio orchestra. And the film is directed brilliantly by Steven Spielberg, one of the greatest directors in the world. The original film used Anglo actors wearing dark makeup in most of the Latino roles. Really fake. The new film uses Latino actors in all of the Latino roles. Really real. The new film is much better than the original film in every way. It's too bad that you have pre-judged it and not given it a chance.
O please, the 'new' WSS is rubbish, yes the singers sing well and the dancers look like they came from a dance factory the Hollywood set is pristine in its urban decay. Too bad they couldn't make a more creative movie, try having one about a Palestinian with an Israeli, a Tibetan with a Beijing lover, Russian with Ukraine or anything that makes it novel. It's just a photo-shopped remake. Don't waste your time , like they wasted the money , watch the original or read Romeo and Juliet.
I felt the same, but after watching it again I realized it was better than the first time. If you want, you can try it. My mother and some friends felt the same.
Literally one of the best looking films I've ever seen! This film better win an Oscar for Best Cinematography!
You mean, THE oscar for this year?
What about Dune
@@nathancampbell9083 sorry but I thought the cinematography here was better, it matched the story better imo with it's shots and long takes.
Went to go see this recently. 100% reccomend! Much more realistic but still the magic of the original
We’ll see. I love the original.
Mais cette version là est magnifique aussi ! Plus réaliste mais très esthétique et pleine de mouvements !
@@franceelle3560 I agree. I saw it last Thursday. It‘s perfect.

4:36 -- This has always been my favorite part of the prologue. So much danger and excitement rolled into one snappy moment.
I listened to this whole song for just that part too!

How can I forget this movie? We did a musical play of West Side Story back in High School days and i was lucky to be one of the performers

Wow sounds so good.
Go listen to the original; it's far better and hasn't been bowdlerized like this shite.
It's a great soundtrack, much better than the original with all of it's phony dubbing. The new soundtrack has the actors actually singing the songs.

does anyone know who does the whistling?

You got that right; this is shite compared to the original. NOBODY CAN MATCH THE SINGING OF MARNIE NIXON, who sang Natalie Wood's parts.

I’m sure you have a flawless, not nasally voice. I’m surprised you didn’t get the role of Maria instead!
