I’ve caught several bass over 5lbs on flys with my fly rod. Very small flys. If they are eating … and you get it in front of them…. They 100% will snack it right up. They eat small stuff all the time.
I have cought dozens of trout on size 22 midge flys. They're basically a tiny black fuzz. I use them as a follower fly under a grasshopper or other top water fly, and I get many more hits on the tiny midge. I can barely feed a 7x tippet through the eye.
They go smaller than size 22. Tanago hooks are the same size as a size 26 hook, but the hook shank is much shorter, so they are made to catch fish that are literally less than 1 inch

One of my go toos for catching baby sunfish for use as live bait is a small gold salmon egg hook, with a half a single leg from a gitzit style tube bait threaded on to it. 1.5" sunfish for days. Largemouth bass LOVE them.
As someone who produce lures i can say that im making vobler from balsa wood thats 16mm long,4mm ticknes and have 2 three-pronged hooks size 22 (smallest i could find),with strong full vibration and fast water is not an problem at all,it works perfectlly...With one hook the smallest one that i can made is 10mm,tickness 2mm....Smaller ones will not be able to stand really fast water so for me,if cant stand fastest curent its not working lure...
The crickhopper is a SLAYER. Twitch on top like a jerk bait. Or Slow crank it. Throw a live grasshopper in the water - watch how he swims. They float on the surface. He'll kick a few times and move a few inches. Pause, kick again. If there are fish around... he won't live long enough to get to shore. 😅 Crickhopper That little lure CATCHES EVERYTHING! 5 pound trout? Check. 8 pound bass? More 3 pound smallies i can count. Crappie, bluegills, big green sunnies, if it swims it'll eat a crickhopper. I've even caught things in the salt down in baja, and here in hawaii where i live now
If you want to go small, look at fly fishing midge hooks. They have been sold down to size 32. Which makes your size 22 hook look big, but appearntly they are not selling them that small anymore and the smallest might be size 26 now.
I use a fixed line Japanese tanago rod all the time. Some 2 pound line and tiny hooks. When I upsize to a 12 hook on it I’ve caught decent regular sized fish.
The rebel crickhopper is my favorite bait. I’ve never had such consistent butes on anything else. Posting this before I watch him use it. Hopefully he does well. The action on it is great
Small lures or flies use a bubble float in order to cast them out. That will help to get a little more distance than trying with only the lure or a split shot.
Most of what fish eat are small animals until they become the top tier predator. Biggest fish I ever caught was a hog of a brown trout on a size 20 micro caddis, but I've caught plenty on smaller midges and nymphs, especially in tail waters. Spinners throw the weight of the lure but fly fishing casts the weight of the line, so you can cast an empty line if you wanted to and it opens up what you can fish. I love fishing spin rods but for that reason alone I always catch more fish on the fly.
I used to catch shiners on hair hooks. Even smaller than your 22 hook. And that pan fish with the big mouth is what we call in Florida a stump knocker, warmouth perch, or rock bass
I used to use size 22 hooks with 12oz leaders and 2lb main line. Last time I was in the tackleshop I was looking at size 26 hooks , great for micro fishing with a single maggot
The sabiki rig should be used by cutting off the branches from the main line in the middle the larger ones I used to use on fly rods to catch striped bass
wait until he hears about size 30 flies for micro brook trout and creek chubs, its gonna be hell. if you want to fish anything below size 20 for small fish, I recommend a 1wt or 2wt fly rod. For bass and standard trout 4-7wt is generally good, tight lines!
Those green sunfish are the most aggressive fish I've ever seen there were quite a few on a tiny lake I grew up on and if you find a bed I'm guessing they will hit anything in the area I'd catch them on anything from big bass baits to bare hooks. They are great if you have some smaller kids fishing since they are aggressive and easy to hook with those big mouths
You should check out mormo culture (russian: мормышинг) that is quite widespread on the Eurasian continent. It is all about rods and lures like 0.1-0.8g, mostly 0.1-0.4 and lines about 0.008 mm wide
Try the strike king bitsy minnow. Its a tiny shallow diver in fire tiger color and i SLAY big bluegill, specs, bass, small snook, cat fish, gar etc. with them. Ive caught a 5 pound large mouth on them with 6 lb. test too!

When I was a young'n I caught a 4 pound bass on a little inch rubber minnow and a 4 and a half pound bass on a small rubber crappie jig fishing a bunch of sticks by a crappie dock. I was up on a bridge over the water and the pole I was using couldn't even reel it up so I had to pull it up by hand. That's probably the biggest fish on the smallest lure I've caught.

(All you southerners shush… yall catch 10lb largemouth all day and that’s decent, we catch one up here in the north and it’s a state record… most of our bass are around a pound… it’s why we don’t go for bass, we go for pike, musky, salmon, and trout instead.)

Its called sabiki rig it costs like 4$ here in Australia. We use it to catch live bait and its also known to catch multiple species in saltwater. You can find them in amazon and anywhere. I will give you tips it works best under the jetty and wharfs or any structure like bride or where there is school of fish or anything. Use small sinker at the end drop straight to the ocean floor then spin your reel 5 times super fast then you will have heaps of fish on the rig if it doesn’t work that way use small piece of chicken or shardines on every hooks you will catch heaps 🎉
I caught a 11-12 pound bass on a #10 joes spinner fly in rainbow trout color. It destroyed the hooks on it because it broke all but one last barb which broke when un-hooking.
As a fly fisherman, I've caught 18 to 20 inch thought on size 20 or smaller flies. I've caught a 3lb bass on a size 18 scud. I've seen size 26 dry fly hooks. Which are so small it's ridiculous.

You should have gone to sportsmans or Cabela’s and get a trout midge. They smaller than that hook and have bead and tie on it.

Get you a small bubble rig, add 5' of leader, and drift flies behind the bubble rig. Ive caught monster trout on size 24-22 flies this way
