Just a minor correction: The order doesn't define major and minor premises; i.e., the first premise might not necessarily be the major premise, nor the second premise the minor premise. Instead, they're named so based on whether they contain the major or minor terms respectively. The major term is the conclusion's predicate, and the minor term is the conclusion's subject. In this syllogism: Socrates is a man. Every man is mortal. Therefore, Socrates is mortal. The major premise is "Every man is mortal" because it contains the major term "mortal" the conclusion's predicate. Meanwhile, "Socrates is a man" serves as the minor premise, containing the minor term "Socrates," the subject of the conclusion.
Thank you. Yes, I inverted the order for pedagogical reasons…technically the ordering of the propositions in a figure is immaterial. But, it is important to be clear about these issues. I’ll post an edit and some quotes on this issue for those who would like to read more.
I believe you misspoke at 10:54. When stating the major premise you said “no man is a plant” which was followed by the minor premise “every man is an animal” and the conclusion “no man is a plant.” You reread the syllogism correctly at 11:55 with the major premise “no animal is a plant.” Otherwise very good video, just thought I should mention it in case someone else, like me, replayed 10:54 trying to understand before realizing it was a mistake.
Thank you for that amazing video, i learned a lot ! I have a serious question : do you have materials and resources to help me understand the concept of the inspiration of scripture, is every single verse inspired in scripture? What about verses that seem so hard to reconcile with a loving God ? Or do you have resources or materials that cover violence and atrocious things in the Old Testament ? Because when people bring that up i have a trouble answering them. Thanks!
A Systematic Study of the Catholic Religion by Charles Coppens, deals with this in the first part. It was written upper high school boys, so relatively easy to read. Christian publishes it, so you can buy from him, or the digital copies are free.
Hey! I know this might be a really general question, but who do you think has the better theology between Lutherans and Reformed? You had mentioned your complaints with Dutch Reformed texts and also mentioned that some used Gerhards texts to refute Lutheranism in the 19th century. However, you also said there were individual Protestant Scholastics that you felt did do good work. Which tradition do you think has the better theology, not by volume but by quality?
I’m an orthodox catechumen who’s inquiring into Catholicism, your channel has helped so much especially with the filioque
