Climbing To Abune Yemata Guh: Ethiopia's Dangerous Church in The Sky

  • This Ethiopian vlog required a short flight 1 hour flight from the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, to Mekele, Tigray. The Tigray region has been the most volatile and dangerous area in Ethiopia due to the civil war that has taken place over the last 3 or so years. Nevertheless, the people of Tigray were the most warm, loving and hospitable people. We were supported, given safe passage and were able to complete the trip with no problem.
From Mekele we took a 2 hour drive to Hawzen, a small town located in the Misraqawi (Eastern) Zone of the Tigray Region. After a day of rest in Hawzen we drove 10 minutes over to the main event, Gheralta Mountains.
Gheralta is home to Abune Yemata Guh, also known as The church in the sky. Abune Yemata Guh sits 8,460 feet (2,580 meters) above ground. This approximately 1,500 year old church can only be reached by scaling the mountain with bare hands and feet (with no ropes or additional support). This is the definition of a real church in the sky! This rock hewn church is one of the major attractions of the entire country as it is tucked into a cliff that requires a climb that will question and threaten your very existence.
Needless to say the trip was worth every second.

My love Tigrai. You are a very respectful person and you really showed love. Thanks fir coming. By the way, he didn't get you but you could have just said bless me Aba or pray for me and he would have. I didn't climb yet but i will definitely do that. And another thing, in Tigrai kids are thought and raised to be priests. Monks dont have children but priests do. That's why he said ti baptize you should learn and understand first but you could ask for blessing in Tigrai not only from priests but from ealderly too. They are always in prayer annd remember God. The whole meditation thing comes from reading very huge spiritual books and understanding them, what our creator wanted us to understand and undestanding nature. They have wealth of ideas to meditate over and go deep into them. I loved your experience and I will go do the same. Thanks again

It's as though every move counts. One mistake and it's over. Climbing with bare hands and feet with no rope is highly stressful! The only safety net are the individuals guiding you (and of course the most high). But there's a point where you have to tip toe a few ledges with absolutely nothing to hold onto. You can't imagine the trepidation that can overtake you when you look down and see just how far of a drop it is if you fall. Thanks for watching.

So much history! Tigray overcame so much pain! Saved by God from Genocider PM and shitopia otherwise they would had exterminated Tigray and take the land/history. Just for your information though, when Tigray’s army backstabbed their brothers and killed over 50% of the Northern Command and also fired missiles to Eritrea, there was a full scale war that took place in between 2020 to 2022 . Knowing that they were losing the war their leaders including generals were hiding in places like this if not specifically this place that you’re at. Some of them were capture ( was live streaming on news),while others were killed in the caves where they were hiding. Just adding some facts to the knowledge you have about this place. However, I love the place it’s breathtaking ❤

Brother now you know why we always win colonial battles we are called the mountains fighters for a reason. The reasons why our ancient churchs are in high mountains is because we keep our ancient artifacts through our church When the colonial invaders, ottaman empier invasions our ancestres took all our religious artifacts hid them in the mountains. England stolen the original Book of Henock, German stolen our herbal medicine books. Many other artifacts. The book of Henock tells us about the people of the earth who is who it tells us about Angeles. Big reason why I Can not say why here but they always attacked the church first burned destroyed it.

Ethiopians accepted christianity through the Ethiopian Eunock who was baptized by Philip according to the bible. The name of the Enock was bacos and he was a right hand man and missionery of Ethiopian Queen. He was there in Israel for a mission; he was travelling to somewhere in Israel on his chariot and he was reading the prophesy of Isiah on his way when God ordered to Philip to go and get the Ethiopian Enock.......thus christianity is introduced to Ethiopia before any other country outside of Ethiopia. Before christianity Ethiopians believe in the God of Ibrahim, Isaac and Jacob and the law of moses and the old testament as a whole. Do you rememmber the father inlaw of Moses whose name is Jethro he was a priest who tought moses how to lead, and manage and he also teached moses to decentralize and deligate some of his power to persons below him so that he could be able to manage and lead the people without frustration. Source bible. Ethiopia is the first country to officially embraced and accrideted Christianity first and Islam second as religion right before Israel and saudi Arabia respectively.

@@Damienmcswinetravel Certainly, The term Tigray originally emerged in the 10th century, referring to one of the diverse ethnic groups within the larger Axumite Empire. This empire encompassed various peoples, including the Amhara, Agaw, Gurage, and others. Following the decline of the Axumite Empire, these groups dispersed throughout the region, forming separate kingdoms with their own distinct power structures. Therefore, Tigray is not the sole owner of the Axumite heritage; rather, it is one of the many constituent peoples who contributed to its rich history. The monestaries were built by Abune Aregawi who was a 6th century Syrian Monk not Tigrayan. I recommend reading Abyssinia of today by Rober P skinner and Kebre Negast to name a few.
