I am from England and this has the American South all over it. Ronnie's vocals, the lyrics, the guitar licks. And Ty is right, Billy Powell's piano stands out even when competing with 3 guitarists, haha!

The solo really is a very good solo. The entire song is special. I was 14 years old when it came out. Took the country, if not most of the world, by storm. A cherished memory is hearing this song on the school bus. Cool bus driver.
I went through periods of burnout on this song when I was listening to the radio a lot. Classic rock stations tend to overplay this one. But it wouldn't take more than a few months between listens to get a hunger pang for
    Sweet Home Alabama.

Rossington- King- Van Zant are the writing credits. Gary Rossington had the original idea for the song, Ed King starts off the song "do do do do do do do, do do, do do do do do do. Rossington and King duel back and forth on guitar. Ed King was the only non- southerner on the band; from L.A.

Great southern rock band from the 60's-80's. It is very sad what happened to this band in losing so many members in a plane crash. My favorite songs are "Simple Man", "Free Bird" & "Sweet Home Alabama". They had lots of great songs such as "Tuesday's Gone", "Call Me The Breeze", "I Know A Little", "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew", "What's Your Name", "That Smell", "Gimme Three Steps" etc.

Jennifer, I did not realize Neil Young had indicated he liked the Sweet Home Alabama. I did see an interview in which someone indicated that Ronnie Van Zant had indicated he had a great respect for Neil Young and the Southern Man song. I think creating a response song to Southern man is one of the things that endured LS to southerners. I personally hated NY solo. I had to sit through him one time to see John Cougar at a fair. He droned on forever. I did like CSNY and Buffalo Springfield, but I can always find a reason to turn the station when Neil Young comes on, and it has little to do with Southern Man. Funny thing, my wife can never remember which is which: Neil Young or Neil Diamond. I tell her that Neil Dimond is the sharp looking Jewish Jazz singer we like, who looked like his name (Diamond), and Neil Young was the heavy slob we saw at the fair, who could not find the end of the song, and was the opposite of his name (Young).

Interestingly none of the three songwriters were from Alabama, being born in Florida and California. It was Ronnie Van Zant's reaction to Neil's song Alabama, which was pretty brutal in its depiction of the state as a symbol of slavery and oppression. Whatever the history it definitely is one of the great rock songs of all time no doubt.

The rift with Neil Young wasn't a real thing. They were actually friendly, mutually admired each other. Picture from 1977 on the web of Ronnie wearing a NY t-shirt if you search.
    From the archive:
Thanks to Neil Young, Lynyrd Skynyrd was inspired to write the song "Sweet Home Alabama".
Without Young's songs that were so critical of the South's segregationist and racist attitudes for inspiration, it is doubtful that the band would have produced a song with such a long lasting duration that continues to sell well 30 years after its release.
But the ultimate irony of "Sweet Home Alabama" is that for so many, the song's implied put down of Neil Young was NOT meant as criticism but as support of Young's anti-racism. Thus, for those who think it's so clever to put down Neil Young using the phrase "Hope Neil Young will remember, a southern man don't need him around anyhow" little do they realize that they have the meaning backwards. Every day, someone blogs or tweets the "Neil Young putdown" without comprehending that they've actually praised him. Similarly, with the State of Alabama using the phrase "Sweet Home Alabama" as an official slogan on license plates, one truly has to wonder what they were thinking the song was about.
Somewhere, Ronnie is still having a good laugh at Alabama officials and Neil Young bashers. Such is the duality of the southern thing.

There's such a broad spectrum of music out there, so many smaller artists that you can find on all kinds of platforms - saying there's no talent and that it's terrible is very superficial. Broaden your horizon. Don't get stuck in the old days.

In the 90's, rap and hip hop took over and the rest died, I can't stand rap and don't consider it music. If I heard good music, I would acknowledge it and have no reason not to, so it comes down to personal choice. The fact is, the industry has ruined music because they've lowered the standards, you don't necessarily have to have talent like before and computers do most of the work nowadays and can make a bad singer sound good, that's not talent.
