8 Weirdest Bosses in Side-Scrolling Beat-’Em-Ups We Still Can’t Explain

- Side scrolling beat-’em-ups need to have loads of enemies in them, otherwise they’d be 10 minutes long. But you can’t just recolour everyone or make the player fight evil clones of themselves forever. That’s how we ended up with bizarre boss designs that are surely the result of a late night, a looming deadline and way, way too many cups of coffee. Consider these, our eight favourites.

If you were going to do The Simpsons, you should have done the giant bowling ball at the end of the "no we didn't create this entire level just to pad out the game" dream sequence level.
I'm fairly certain the list of "Revenge of Shinobi's" bosses was devised by an eight year old in an arcade, trying to convince us that Shinobi was "like the toughest guy EVER".
Could totally beat Spiderman who turns into Batman. Yes-huh!
I was just waiting for the next item on the list, with Spiderman, to feature something from Shinobi as a boss.
I think it might be a Kamen Rider reference. The first villain to appear in that series was Kumo Otoko, the second Komori Otoko - literally Spider Man and Bat Man.
I could hear the argument now.
"I'll bet you 5 bucks Shinobi could beat up Batman, Spiderman, Rambo and The Terminator, at the SAME TIME!"

The characters in Revenge of Shinobi are a perfect reason why arcade games used to be fun. It didn't matter if it made sense... It was awesome!
Not sure why you're surprised Mr Burns is a boss. He's quite literally Homer's boss.
Chippies And the power suit makes sense too- he runs a nuclesr power plant... So he has a nuclear powered suit. Especially considering the fact that he is an old man and probably couldn't fight himself anyways, the suit works even better to explaining how he can fight anyways plus justifies a large health bar (as you're literally trying to break a solid metal machine by punching and kicking it).
His evil plan doesn't really fit, though.
And only Homer punches and kicks. Lisa hits him with a jump rope.

That's because The Simpsons' game was made when the show was in its first or second season, they didn't had much characters or well stablished lore to work into the game so they had to improvise. (They were well known because of their shorts in the Tracy Ullman show).
Another reason is that the game was made by a japanese company (Konami) so they probably didn't had any knowledge about the show. (Maybe the show didn't even air in Japan at the time).
And just for a fun fact the game does portrays Mr Burns as a weakling, after you destroy his suit he's still alive and it only takes a single to beat him.
To be fair he has tried to killed the Simpsons a few times in the series, so it's not that surprising he would go the extreme with nuclear battle suit *heck he used a tank just to get to the Simpsons's house in the show*
But he is like a million years old. It's kind of weird when you really think about it.
Andy, don't judge a man for eating a rotisserie chicken off the floor of a haunted house that looks like the mouth of hell and currently houses a screaming alien monster. Maybe he's really hungry.
You forgot to mention the rotisserie chicken came out of an alien egg that quite clearly had a baby alien in it before being smashed. So is that rotisserie chicken or rotisserie baby alien?

It creates a magic shimmer going all the way from where you are up to the next marker for your quest, even if you have no clue what that would be. Sounds about reasonable for a fantasy setting, right? Noooooooo.
*HOW* can so much people be missing or secretly imprisoned when a low level mage can do the "cast, walk, wait to replenish mana" trick and prove where they are? I'm looking at you, Missing In Action quest! ANYONE can find Thorald Gray-Mane!
That's more than GPS, that's X-men levels precognition mixed with a flawless GPS.
I can't wrap my head aroung how massive that magic would need to be if magic was real, but ingame it is one of the lowest level ones.

Sticks to Snakes, then Growth of Animal. You could turn a bundle of kindling into a mess of giant vipers.
Sticks to Snakes was used by Moses in the Bible, to intimidate Pharaoh.
Then Pharaoh's court wizards also turned their staffs into snakes, which were promptly eaten by Moses' snake, proving that the God of the Israelites was more powerful than the Egyptian gods.
Mr Burns in a robot suit throwing nuclear bombs isn't weird the one word description you need for that side-scrolling boss is "Excellent", preferably said with arched fingers.

Someone hasn't been to Canberra, Australia recently.
At least Mr. Burns says 'Excellent' properly when he kills you. And he's not a bear or an evil bowling ball or a fire-breathing drunk like previous bosses.
Final Fight 2 alone could fill another list. You fight Frankenstein's monster, an acrobatic clown (again not in a circus stage, but a train stage), and a guy dressed up as an Oni with wooden clogs and a wig. Then Final Fight 3 has a pirate.
Years ago for my own enjoyment I planned out the roster and accompanying move set for a hypothetical Simpsons fighting game called "Mortal Krusty". My favourite character was Mr. Burns who never did any actual fighting, instead barking out orders and having Smithers fight for him. I'm still surprised no Simpsons game has done this.

Brah Simpsons Wrestling did EXACTLY this haha? You play as "Mr. Burns" but actually control Smithers. Burns just throws bombs into the ring. As far as I can remember they're a boss character so not fully functional in the actual fighting game side of it but still it's exactly the same idea as yours.
@@leons.kennedy2747 Mr. Burns (or Smithers) wasn't actually playable in The Simpsons Wrestling, but indeed they did do exactly this. As a side note, if you lost to them, Mr. Burns takes credit for the win.

@@fernandopenalva2680 Barney riding a pink elepehant makes more sense than hin riding a dragon, since "seeing pink elephants" is an old fasioned euphamism for being so drunk you see things that aren't there. Another example of this expression is in the movie Dumbo, when Dumbo drinks some alcohol he starts to see pink elephants

As an aussie I can vouch for how terrifying getting into a fight with a kangeroo is! It's also just as likely to occur in a city street as the bush, those things are everywhere!
I didn't know Revenge of Shinobi was a beat 'em up, but I'm glad it was mentioned. You can't talk about weird bosses in video games without mentioning that time Hulk, Terminator, Spiderman, Batman, and Godzilla all took a shot at a ninja dressed in white.
I think the dream stage in the Simpsons game had a much weirder boss. A giant morphing bowling ball... Also most of the stuff on that level was weird as hell in general.

In all fairness, calling a game “Cadillacs and Dinosaurs,” gives you leave to do basically anything that doesn’t involve car brands other than Cadillac.
Probably true, just don't show the game to an actual paleontologist otherwise he might point out a bunch of creatures that are lizards but not dinosaurs lmao.
Cadillacs and Dinosaurs was a licensed game, based off of a comic book that got a animated series the same year. (I think there was a toy line as well.) Capcom's Simpsons game was probably truer to series canon than C&D was.
Also a mad scientist turning into bizarre dinosaur hybrid is not that weird in this context. It's pulp scifi and he's mad.
@@mikkoolavijarvinen3653 Yeah, when it comes to weird bosses in Beat'em ups and 1v1 Fighter, you kinda have to grade on a curve, trained kangaroos and possibly sentient animatronic aliens, weird in a game with a comparatively normal sounding name like Streets of Rage, not so much if the title not so much if its titled something like Carnival of Horrors or Alien Fighters
Wait, the Hulk is a Terminator? That means he was sent from the future to destroy humanity...Banner probably helped Tony Stark with his AI...the army wastes tons of firepower on the Hulk, weakening them for when the machines rise...IT ALL MAKES SENSE!

Is Roo supposed to be the same Roo from Winnie the Pooh? If so Kanga did a pretty lousy job protecting and raising her child.
I think he might be Rodger from Tekken actually, and the Streets of Rage crew save him from a life of fighting in a circus so he can enjoy a life of freedom fighting in the King of Iron Fist Tournament.
I don't think the two are mutually exclusive.
There wasn't a lot she could do to protect her child from a robot clown, and the town guard of the hundred acre wood wasn't much help either, being armed with literal pop-guns.

Well you see, Kanga died of cancer in Roo's teenage years. With Owl growing senile and Rabbit being constantly hunted by a strange bald man with a speach impediment, no one was mature enough to help raise Roo. So to support himself, Roo had to turn to underground streat fighting. After winning a few fights, a robot clown manager had tricked Roo into a contract, making Roo a fighting slave.
Mr. Big from Narc is the weirdest boss in all of games. He starts as Lou Bega in a weaponized wheelchair and ends as a giant skull shooting fireballs from a hoverpad.
Yeah, but that's not a beat'em up.
I recently played Double Dragon with my 8 year old daughter. When Green Abobo came out she hollered "Hulk Smash ".
There are loads in all the Splatterhouse games, but obvious picks would be the hanging fetuses that you attack with a chainsaw, a boss called "Bellyache" and "Hell Chaos" being a weird decaying head... nice 👍🏼
I personally would have gone for the Teddy bear boss in splatterhouse 3 that starts out as a normal, if rather large, stuffed bear but transforms into this strange, squat grotesque monster who looks like it has just been skinned with massively long arms and tiny little legs.
The Splatterhouse bosses make sense for the game that they are in, though.

If I'm honest, I'd say (apart from the award winning accent he used to flaunt) that he's the far more successful weeb since he's even nailed the stereotypical fireballs, dive kick and over the top finishing move.

The first entry just puts that section of Streets of Rage in a new light. Maybe an alien fell in a bad part of town and was adopted by a bunch of fans of self-defense. The people you fight on the way were just trying to keep you from find their new friends. In the end, you kill a defenseless alien and walk out thinking you've just stopped some jerk's plot to take over the city or whatever that game's plot was.

These boss fights remind me of any coding project I work on after 3AM. I turn it on in the morning and suddenly I've created a terrible Half Life 3 instead of a simple website about cats.

Dragons Crown has the Rabbit from Monty Python and the Holy Grail as a boss. He looks a bit out of place next to bosses like a Beholder, a Chimera or the Reaper.
At least there's a reference being made there, though, so in a very specific context it makes sense. Asheron's Call also had a very high level rabbit boss.

You should have included the final boss of Joe And Mac. Depending on the version you play, it's either a giant green man who shoots leeches at you (in the arcade version), or a cartoonish red devil (on the snes). What makes it weirder is that, either way, the fight occurs inside the body of a t-rex.
I am sure there is explanation about Hulkinator and Spider-Bat. All this Multiverse staff.

This brings some wonderful memories. I loved the Streets of Rage games and the Simpsons arcade game. That Streets of Rage 2 start page is one of the all time best (so is the music).

Have you ever played Dynamite Dux? One of the first REGULAR enemies you face is a bouncing dog head and they mostly get more bizarre from there...

Ah, the Simpsons arcade game. The only arcade beat-em-up I ever completed. Took forever, wasted so much of my dad's money, but was worth it to me. Good times, good times.

About Zamza and Oehellis. I think it's safe to assume that the Oehellis head was just an animatronic (since machinery does tend to make weird sounds when you beat the shit out of it), and Zamza was an actor/performer/ gang member working at the attraction.

The streets are definitely a place you find a boxing kangaroo.
Holyshiit, how can that company that made the game shinobi not got sued? That game has Rambo, hulk who later turned into terminator(wtf?), Godzilla, Spider-Man who later turned into Batman(wtf seriously? I can't even......)
Growl. The final boss is a giant clown that throws tanks, like M1 Abrhams tanks, at you then turns in to a worm demon when you punch him enough. The premise of Growl is that you are park rangers trying to stop animal poachers BTW.
I still remember that fight against Mr. Burns in the Simpsons arcade. Still the only arcade game we officially beat.
Ugh, the Simpson game. Way back, like maybe 15 years ago, we were at a hotel that had the arcade cabinet, and me and my sister made it all the way to Mr. Burns, but when we asked for more quarters she wouldn't give them to us. I don't know how many more forms of the machine we had left, but it's still disappointing to come so close.

I had a game called Rival Turf it was a side scroll beat em up. Everytime I see any of these side scrolls I can see that they alot of the characters were reskins of the same enemies And the playable characters in every game.

The Burns and Smithers fights in The Simpsons still crack me up. Even in 1990, we knew that was glaringly off-kilter for the show's young canon.
Cadillac's & Dinosaurs, what a great cartoon that was. It had everything, Cadillac's but also dinosaurs.

I would nominate either Johnny or Dr Saturn's Car from Battle Circuit (CPS2, 1997). Johnny is an Elvis impersonator and criminal mastermind with a variety of moves, Dr Saturn is a recurring boss along with his mascot, some sort of green blob he pets like a cat and even when using his grav-car he's vulnerable to grapples (so he can be suplexed... in his car). That said that whole game is weird as all hell, with one player being a small girl on a battle ostrich and another is a carnivorous plant with a giant eyeball in his stomach. In any other side-scroller they'd be bosses, not heroes.

Revenge of Shinobi seems like one of those games where if you went into it with an ounce of magic mushrooms and an open mind you would 1; need more mushrooms, and 2; finish the game with a 400 page novel detailing how its the greatest, deepest game ever made since Jesus' birthday.
I like that Andy says "consider these our favourites", not "these are our favourites".
