Hullo Emma, I have found paint is one of the more expensive options for covering up a page or even just a part of a painting that I feel has gone “off the rails” or messed up! I step back and coat the section or page with watercolor ground! I have enjoyed real success with QoR’s watercolor ground, I have even found recipes for watercolor grounds right here on TH-cam! Liz Chaderton’s channel has a couple of amazing ideas/recipes for watercolor ground. I have coated boards to allow me to use my watercolor paints there too! Yes, I have used ground for covering up pages in watercolor journals. You might find commercial ground to expensive, this is why I mentioned the DIY recipes! I have found paint is still the MOST EXPENSIVE solution for covering up a mistake in watercolor or even gouache!
I hope you give this a try and let your viewers know if you can recommend this option as well. I have used gesso for acrylic painting goofs, I have never found a good permanent solution for oil paints. For oils you just need to start over with a new canvas or board. You can save your stretcher bars and get new canvas, just another reason oils are truly the most expensive medium to paint with!

I agree that it is expensive, but her final painting was lovely. My go-to for sketchbook errors is to simply glue new art over the unsatisfactory page, lol. Another idea is to write a page of journaling about all the art in that book, then glue that over. Sometimes you can even leave part of the art showing for a nice border.

You said you didn’t care to paint with gouache. Yet you just painted that piece like an acrylic/ gouache/ oil stroke work expert!!

Yes....I worked with oils for 15 years, and the last thing done in a painting was highlights which just popped things out. Then I went to Decorative painting with acrylics and did that for a year. Now I am jumping into watercolor, and, as we know, we do what is necessary to save the white. I have used white gouache to pop things out.

@@user-tt6vx6gr9udo you use the Donna Dewberry style? I started out with "floating" to get the blend. I did this beautiful painting on a hexagon two-piece wood (had a lid) container where one can put jewelry in. It was 7 inches in diameter at the bottom, bellowed out in the middle all the way around, then curved in. It took a good while to paint it from preparing the wood, to painting basecoat, to tracing design onto container, painting, then spraying several coats of a semi-gloss finishing. My daughter loved it so I gave it to her. If I sold it, I had no idea what to charge, due to all the time in just painting in the decorative style.

@@ladyhecate9450 ….. I started painting in oil in 1977, it was called Tole Painting back then. Our teacher started learning how to paint in acrylics at a Jackie Shaw seminar and then we all gradually switched to acrylics. What you said is what I was taught too, I’m just starting to learn watercolors by watching TH-cam. It’s not easy for me!

Emma, mission accomplished, page saved and is gorgeous! I have been wondering how white goache would work mixed with watercolor for black paper, you illustrated (literally) it perfectly! Thank so much! I teach beginning watercolor workshops and have always relied on white gel pens for highlights, but they are often unreliable and disappointing. I am going to add white goache to the pallets going forward. You are one of the best teachers out there, I suggest your channel to my classes to keep on learning, just as I did🥰

Ta da! Super cute save. I use gouache the same way you do. It's worth noting that gouache is also considered watercolor. I concur, it really is a great medium that is so useful! I got a chuckle with the failed painting in the sketchbook. My OCD could never lol. I sometimes use a mat black acrylic to paint over the ones I don't like and do collage, or I paint over with whatever acrylic necessary to cover it and just use acrylic to paint save the page with.
