It's odd but it seems in just about every hoof trimming video that I've watched, the widest part of the foot is drawn about 1/4" too far back. I'm looking at the sole and not the hoof wall.
The measurements are for an "average" size foot (roughly 4.75" to 5.25" in width). As the foot gets smaller or larger, the measurement lengths decrease or increase respectively. There is a summary of the Widest Part of the Foot research paper on the ELPO website (www.lamenessprevention.org) under the "Information > ELPO Research" tab that includes a general range. You can contact us from that website as well for details on mini's or draft horses if you need more guidance.
You have not optimized this horse at the hoof. This horse has a problem loading the heels correctly that should be addressed by a physical therapist. (23:41) Look at the imbalance in the heel bulbs, the hoof is twisted. The medial heel bulb is less developed and looks to be more forward (underrun). The nail holes are causing lamina failure, seen by a wall flare that is at the medial toe pillar. Once the flare reaches the toe pillar the horse begins a cycle that is difficult to reverse. You know this...yet choose to do nothing. This horse should be offered the opportunity to go barefoot and work with a team that understands...there is a better way.

I love watching them scrape or nipper the chalky stuff out of the hoof for some reason. It's just really satisfying to watch.

what is the name of the measuring tool you are using?
J.H. Forge Hoof Evaluator (Wing Divider) Aluminum and is made in the USA! They are nice for measuring will last a lifetime if you buy one.
