Oh My God Howard! How we've both aged since Manchester (1982-1983) days! I met you in the Sydney Building, (Newly Renamed, "The Nelson Mandella Building" opposite the Manchester Polytechnic. It was apparently the last brand new student union building to be built before the Thatcher cuts... I was at the Polytechnic studying BSc Elect/Electron Engineering (with a particular interest in electronic music and digital processing of sound) {I went on to design a practical word recognition system around a BBC-B computer capable of recognizing the spoken numbers from 0 to 9 and the word, "dial" to dial a strouger telephone. As my final year project} I recall that you were a mature student enrolled at the Royal Northern College of Music just up next to the Pheonix Centre where I used to catch my 253 bus to Urmston, 7 miles out of town. I remember you going on about a new song you had written and you were talking about what to call it. You hummed out a few notes but it sounded to us a bit vague but I was amazed to discover years later that it was a hit just a year later when I heard it on the radio during my year out in industry at Bonar Instruments in Cheadale. I didn't make the connection until years later M8 when I discovered that you actually named it, "New Song!" How the hell are you ???.
In the 80s, I worked in a large music store and sold lots of Jupiter 6 & 8s. This product evokes sonic memories of the same period. My other "all time favorites" are Oberheim's Matrix-12 and Sequential Circuits' Prophet 5. The eighties was a true blending of digital and analog. On on hand, digitally controlled (MIDI & patch memory) but still analog oscillators and generation. Of course, any disputes over how close the Jupiter 80 captures the era is like arguing CD merits vs. vinyl, or religion.
I agree, I think this new synth actually sounds really awesome. People have come to expect WAY TOO MUCH from a keyboard. I think this synth will actually deliver the goods quite well.
Who cares how it creates the sounds, or whether they're anything like a Jupiter 8, or whether they're good/bad/indifferent - it's what you do with them that counts. Even with the best equipment around you can still make a song sound s*** (you only have to listen to what's in the charts now).
Mr. Jones states several times in response to the interviewers' question that he is not interested in SuperNATURAL acoustic sounds, he prefers synths. That's the case with each and every keyboardist who can afford a JP-80 because a person who has the bucks for this will also have the bucks for hiring a real world trumpeter. The great mistake in my opinion is Roland placing the emphasis on SuperNATURAL which is simply not needed in mainstream music.
Read carefully what I wrote. I am not against Howard Jones. I love his music and the way he was using analog synths. I was trying to say that in this interview Howard doesn't really look like he is into new Jupiter 80. I am freak of analog synths.
Howard Jones is an absolute legend... the 43 people who downvoted need to be restrained and gently tickled for at least an hour..... I can't play a keyboard for toffee, but I've just bought a Roland A-500Pro Midi Controller and a subscription to Roland Cloud, so I will die trying ;)
Ive been dying to buy my first Synth and like many people over 30 I crave the retro stuff but realise its 2012 so the JP80 looks and sounds ideal, another geat job done by Roland by the sound of it, a JP80 and a SH-201 and I would be very happy!
If I had to give it any positive feedback, it would be that you can split this into different sections and play 3-4 different sounds at one given time. And, the synth sounds extremely lush. I'd have to actually sit down at one and test drive it.....
I was one of the first to comment on this video. It wasn't positive, but that was before I played it. I now have bought one. It's an unbelievable synth.
Oops..was not suppose to add comment. Sorry, but its good o see howard jones again an i was going to search up his old and new music. Itunes here i come : o)
@SchranzyAnn As a Fantom X owner, I have to disagree on the filters. The Fantom filters are pretty cruddy. These sound much juicier, sort of like the JP-8000, which I also own.
nah this sounds very good actually. I just acquired a juno 6(eventually will find a 60 and get rid of the 6) but about to get a jupiter 8 as well. this sounds quite amazing in my opinion. will eventually want to get this as well
I agree with Roland's philosophy 'we design the future', so they don't want to go back to old analog technology completely, but it would have helped everyone's needs if roland combined SuperNatural with real analog to make this...I am sure then it would have turned a lot more heads. (I played a Juno 60 at the guitar center...its effects were very limited and crap but i loved the analog osc and filters). Glad Dave Smith still sells real polyphonic analog synths.
I'm sorry, but I think you are totally missing the point. The Jupiter-8 is an amazing synth even in 2013. It's so good that still today a 2nd hand Jupiter-8 will cost you 2-3 times more than a new Jupiter-80, and there's a good reason for that.
Gordon Reid (SOS) - "I placed my Jupiter 8 next to the Jupiter 80 and compared them directly. Of course there were differences, but in a blind test of some brass and string patches, I couldn’t tell which synth was generating which. This was not what I had expected!"
Gordon Reid (SOS) - "Nonetheless, there is in my view one significant shortcoming in Supernatural Synth; while you can affect the loudness and brightness of a sound using aftertouch, you can’t introduce vibrato, tremolo or growl. For a synth that prides itself on its performance capabilities, this seems a lamentable oversight"
@MtbSkl The earliest demos weren't very good, but better ones like this one are appearing slowly. Search here and you will find the other good new videos. I am definitely buying this synth!
Ok this is like, OMG gotta have this NOW! Howard is such a calm, non-marketing guy; I feel like I'm hearing from a fellow musician on the instrument with his presentation, no hard sell here. Seems to me the distinct interest of this keyboard is in the huge tonal palette that you can mix and control in realtime while playing. What remains a question is: how deep can you go with the touch screen on editing tones and partials? Do you have complete control, like with say MC-909, over selecting f
This blows away a Jupiter 8 on pads and layering. He would have to add a ton of effects to a JP8 or layer with other synths to get the big sounds he needs on stage.
WOW!! I was disappointed after I saw a few videos about this synth and reading the comments.. I just heard a very good synth!! I don't care about the acoustic sounds, I have a fantom for these, but the synth sounds are great! Don't you agree? Nice review!
I have the Jupiter 80 and i can say it is the best synth i have owned i started playing 1979 and have tried them all. kronos is annoying, amount of time on startup and horrible fan. sound quality on the p80 is first class, there is no sound on the jp80 i cannot find it has it all, the operating system takes time to understand, after that the possibilities are limitless. honestly, built like a brick , great keys, great screen roland dependability . 3 year warranty too. awesome
@devmiles I believe that you might possibly have a bias in your commentary. While I agree that the Jupiter 80 is not an analogue synth, that is not in dispute, it is a piece of equipment which represents the era in which it was made. Which means to say, it is a MODERN SYNTH, quite frankly, if they had simply rebuilt the Jupiter would anyone buy it?
I kinda felt like he was pumping Howard to 'sell' this keyboard, like he wanted him to extol the virtues of piano sounds etc. I feel Howard wanted to say "If I wanted a piano sound, I'd use a piano". This all felt a bit forced, but it's great to see Howard doing his thing, exploring SYNTH sounds!
It's a lovely piece of kit, but in today's current climate, with all the other alternatives available at the price ( inc complete "on a budget" setups, too!) it's too pricey. Ive seen a fair few used ones ebay already, which was a bit surprising considering i thought that at that price, it would be out of the reach of many.
@jebeq2007 I have NO rompler, rehashed or otherwise, which does such amazing acoustic and synthetic articulations. Buy a JP-80 and a Kronos, and you won't need anything but a real analog for perhaps a decade. I think your post is much more a doorstop.
It boggels my mind that some of you cant find this synth attractive. The Jupiter 80 is a great synth. and it does exactly what its supposed to. we live in 2011 not 1980 anymore. so stop comparing it to the jupiter 8. Lovely Howard 😊Are you still playing the fantastic Jupiter 80 along with the new Phantom awesome workstation, that's the 1 I want to buy because it does everything but make ☕️😜😆💕😎🇬🇧
What is the Jupiter 80? Does it have analog or physical modeling? (Like the Korg Kronos, Z-1, Yamaha AN1x, Alesis Fusion, etc) Or is it purely sample based, like the Integra 7, XV-5080, etc?
Primarily a analogue and acoustic modeller although it differs quite a lot from older Roland modellers and has samples as well, but it has more than one modelling engine so you can layer acoustic models with a analogue synth model etc. But the main "trick" it that it changes behaviour of some of the models according to how it is played, this is similar to some of the Italian workstations (Ketron etc) that change the phrasing from what you play on the keyboard to something that sounds more like the instrument that is modelled, so an arpeggio played on a guitar model comes out more like it would like a guitar player would arpeggiate rather than a keyboard player would and so on.
reiknir Interesting. So it's definitely an analog & acoustic/physical modeling synth, with a ROMpler as well, (like the Alesis Fusion HD & Korg Kronos) & not analog "emulation". (like the SH-01 Gaia) Thanks for the information. I already have a lot of synths, but I'm thinking of getting another. (can never have too many IMO :-) My choices are Jupiter 80, Yamaha Motif XF, DSI Prophet 12, or maybe a combination (whatever = around $2,500 or so) of Korg KingKorg, R3, Microkorg/XL, Novation Ultranova. It's a hard choice. The Motif XF is nice, but I already have top of the line "workstations". (Kronos X, Fusion HD & Kurzweil PC3K) I really love analog modeling synths, (& have a Z-1, EXB-MOSS in my Triton, Fusion HD, PLG150-AN in my Motif 6 & EX5) so I am leaning more towards modeling synths. Anyway, thanks again.
This is a digital synth? Why cant I find the sample rate anywhere? Plus, is it modeling or ROMpler? It sounds huge through YT no doubt, but why cant I find the mechanix anywhere? anyway AWESOME DEMO thanks Mr Jones.
They say you should never meet your heroes, but.... Howard just seems like the nicest guy.
A music legend and a real lovely guy. Howard, we are your fans.
EatTheScroII then shouldn't be here saying you don't like him....you just don't appreciate how mega talented Howard is you muppet
i realize it is quite off topic but does anybody know a good site to stream new tv shows online?
I watched this video and I love the sounds this synth gives off, I saw Howard Jones in early 90s in concert, he is an amazing musician. Love him!
What an all round nice guy! Really nice to see Howard still pumping out those 80s synth vibes.
th-cam.com/video/UpNGi6Qtq54/w-d-xo.html 👍
I can here his vibe in his little demos, fits whith his hits Howard Jones essence
I know this video is old but Howard I love your collection of electric keyboards 🎹🎹🎹😎👍 Awesome.
THANKS HOWARD & INTERVIEWER!!! I am so sold on it!!! Hoping/planning to pick up one tomorrow.

Howard Jones, just fan ! th-cam.com/video/UpNGi6Qtq54/w-d-xo.html
Funny that Howard let slip the Jupiter 8 was STILL his favourite synth of all time

Still sounds good in lockdown 2020 👍
Howard Jones..Legend...
th-cam.com/video/UpNGi6Qtq54/w-d-xo.html😉
He was convinced and the only time I’ve seen him use one ! I think Roland dumped it on his doorstep 😂😂😂
I still think this is one of the best JP80 demos, and really shows that it's not just a lame "rompler" when in good/creative hands.
Who cares how it creates the sounds, or whether they're anything like a Jupiter 8, or whether they're good/bad/indifferent - it's what you do with them that counts. Even with the best equipment around you can still make a song sound s*** (you only have to listen to what's in the charts now).
A legend, Howard, you rock!
thanks for the review! it really helped me pick out my first synthesizer.
The 80's Legend.....love his music
I love it when he gets bored shitless and just starts playing the Dr Who theme.

Márton Marczell agreed

Incredible, always wanted a Roland juno 60 but ended up buying a JV80, i believe vince Clark is a huge fan of the Jupiter.
a legend in his own lifetime
th-cam.com/video/UpNGi6Qtq54/w-d-xo.html 👏
Love those paintings behind him!
Love Howard Jones. He done some good stuff on the Jupiter 8. Think he a nice man seems very down to earth.
th-cam.com/video/UpNGi6Qtq54/w-d-xo.html
WONDERFUL. HOWARD SHOULD MAKE SOME PATCHES FOR THE JP80.
Hojo AND Roland ...... massive fan of both!
Love Howard too 💕

A classic case of hearing what you want to hear and believing what you want to believe.
But you can’t beat the Jupiter 8 still. It’s original. Howard is a lovely man. Down to earth.
Ive been dying to buy my first Synth and like many people over 30 I crave the retro stuff but realise its 2012 so the JP80 looks and sounds ideal, another geat job done by Roland by the sound of it, a JP80 and a SH-201 and I would be very happy!
Mr. Jones !! ... the best !!
robertotamez i
It has the Supernatural Engine which is a synthesis engine not sample based.
If I had to give it any positive feedback, it would be that you can split this into different sections and play 3-4 different sounds at one given time. And, the synth sounds extremely lush. I'd have to actually sit down at one and test drive it.....

Rehashed $3500 Rompler, Does any one honestly need another Rompler?
Jones is being PAID. This thing will end up as a door stopper for him

Please, just pan the camera to the left and begin talking about the synth beside the JP80.
Ok this is like, OMG gotta have this NOW!

This blows away a Jupiter 8 on pads and layering. He would have to add a ton of effects to a JP8 or layer with other synths to get the big sounds he needs on stage.
@realtrance You can, this new synth really has a level of depth all of its own...

Nice review!
It sounds great. I reckon its just that some of the presents are a bit cliche but if you're prepared to program
More interesting now.....:-) Back to my 80's
He's a very cool guy"

no mate it has semi weighted synth keys and they feel great it is my master keyboard for that reason. cheers
George Lynch no thanks.

Great demo Howard, the piece you played at 5.26 was superb BUT not enough of it!
Thanks, I am sure you would make a great keyboard tutor!
I'm Big fan too 💕

OMG howard jones & nick batt from sonicstate 8D
polyphony is 256
My jupter80 thank God
@mattsynth Indeed it was, such a talent at the keys...
Hey Howard Jones fans! Check out this exclusive interview from 1998: th-cam.com/video/4Xbmoa6OpvE/w-d-xo.html
What is your favorite Howard Jones song?
1:22 sounds likethe lifeforms preset from the sunrizer app
It's a lovely piece of kit, but in today's current climate, with all the other alternatives available at the price ( inc complete "on a budget" setups, too!) it's too pricey. Now if it were about 20% or more cheaper RRP, then it WOULD sell more units.
@bunker8digitallabs He's kinda right, though. Jupiter 8's don't sell for 5k for no reason...
Great video. Nice machine. Thanks for sharing this.
No blue screen of death on the 80! You want the X for that! XP? Ha
Nick this is you doing the interview! Know your voice anywhere buddy!
@coreystuart
AMEN!!!! The Jupiter-8 is a real synth, with a personality, whereas this j-80 is just a box full of features nobody will ever use. (like the korg oasys)
Hahaha! You idiot
Jay Keel it’s true.
This is super rad! Thank you!!!
these synth Gods dont live long enough then we have only garbage to listen to
@vegunited06 You are dead wrong, Howard is a very genuine, honest artist. It was Roland's choice to name it the Jupiter 80, but it is a worthy synth in its own right. It really is capable of some tremendously cool stuff.
If Roland were to repackage the jupiter 8, it wouldn't be cost effective, it wouldn't sound the same and no one would like it because their ears would expect nostalgia to ring true.
Get a grip, the 80's are over for Howard, they should be for you too.
Wooo!!! The Great HoJo. Under his hands. I dam near flashed all the way back right there at 5:40-5:50. Great stuff.
th-cam.com/video/UpNGi6Qtq54/w-d-xo.html 😉
@devmiles A Sound on Sound reviewer tested the JP-80 and the JP-8 side by side and he couldn't tell the difference in sounds.
I sure miss the 80's hojo music. those were the days.
th-cam.com/video/UpNGi6Qtq54/w-d-xo.html 😉
@alphasxsignal 4 splits, up to 10 sounds + effects (lots of them)

Lovely Howard 😊Are you still playing the fantastic Jupiter 80 along with the new Phantom awesome workstation, that's the 1 I want to buy because it does everything but make ☕️😜😆💕😎🇬🇧
He painted the V keyboard stands white.

it's nice enough but I just think they shouldn't use the Jupiter or Juno name for a digital synth, it just isn't the same beasty
@krysthalas Great, fair and balanced comment.
@MethodicBR Cool. Looks like it can do many things.
This is a digital synth? Why cant I find the sample rate anywhere? Plus, is it modeling or ROMpler? It sounds huge through YT no doubt, but why cant I find the mechanix anywhere? anyway AWESOME DEMO thanks Mr Jones.
At 5:27 that's nice layering.
Cool vid...thanks for uploading! Gotta get those!
Right?
Howard! Jupiter 80 guys forgot to include dual d-beam & time trip pad as v synth gt has!!!
Nick Batt on the interview?
how cool would that be to turn up at Howards house and have a jamming session.. awesome!
does he say was or wasn't excited ???
