Important Note: If you're wondering what happened to yesterday's video, I was forced to removed it because a few people started to abuse the amount of information it revealed. It turned out to contain too many spoilers. The original intent of the video was to show you my commonplace book but without people copying & sharing it word for word. That was a miscalculation on my part. This video is almost the same but with some spoilers taken out. Sorry, and thanks for understanding.
If you liked the old video, please click the like button again here, as the old video lost nearly 11,00 views and 1,000 likes :(

I find that after writing all my thoughts and feelings into a notebook before I go to bed, it helps calm my mind because it like this assurance that yes great these thoughts these feelings I am having are important/valued. That they are not going to be forgotten they are noted down here for tomorrow and decades to come and that really helps me in calming my mind.

It puts you into a state where the ultimate journal matters in a good way. You truly don't give a shit about anything and you're just happy as fuck as a result, because nothing matters. Nothing matters, nothing means anything, there's nothing to do, there's no point, there's no goal but there's also no boredom, there's no negative meanings attached to the meaninglessness, it's just perfectly meaningless and it's awesome. You're basically just like sitting like a cat on a windowsill enjoying whatever experience is before it, just being and it feels amazing.

I've been doing this since I was a child - I am currently keeping mine using the evernote app (which lets you insert graphics and attachments). I am still putting things together and will be doing so for the rest of my life.

Hey Leo! I started journaling two days ago, like a diary and I thought this episode was going to be about that type of journaling. I felt very intimidated because I lack the confidence and always believed I wasn't smart enough to do this kind of work. I felt like I should stop watching but I pushed myself to with the mentality of "just listen and observe, treat it like mental seeds for the future, you don't have to do anything but just listen." I'm so glad I did and I felt like I really got to know you in a different light, we have so much more in common than I previously thought over the past year from reading your bullet notes. I think I will invest in this when this Covid subsides. I'm not very business-oriented and I'm not sure where my life is going, I'm currently in this cocoon phase of my development where I haven't really found people who resonate with me yet, I've been kind of a lone wolf for the time being. But I really feel that I can do a journal similar to this but probably more student-oriented, but that's open to change down the road. I think I'm going to start with your life purpose course after I read this book A Course in Miracles. Anyways, so happy I find you last year!! This video was really a huge surprise to me and I feel like it sparked some passion in me. Thank you! 🌈💚🐢😇

Thank you so much Leo! I have so many video summary's, school notes, aspirational quotes, goals etc that I have all stored randomly on my macbook's 'Notepad'. You literally have saved my life from spiralling out of control. I have onenote on my macbook this whole time which I just haven't utilized. Everything is falling in to place now and becoming organised and I don't need to stress about something I may have forgotton, as I am currently in the process of making my Commonplace book. I absolutely love the videos you make, watching this while I had breakfast this morning. I'm in the middle of my exams and this is helping my out so much with organising absolutely everything! So thank you so much for the time and effort you spent in making this video!

Woooow, this just changed my life. I already started to write down every insight and info I find and think of, started my commonplace book years ago. The only problem is that I simply made a l library of simple folders with in folders with in folders by categories, and have a lott of random notepads for everything. And then a lot of information down each notepad, and when it goes too long I start a new notepad for the same topic at times and continue. And It grew huge, and veery hard to articulate my self around it. Wish I had this program when I started!
My life's information is a stack of about a thousand notepads scattered at all places.

I strongly recommend Notion for note-taking. I've tried everything from Notes app on Mac, Evernote, Wikis my company has used, etc, but Notion has come out far ahead of the pack. You get instant search for anything with "cmd + k" and it's a pleasure to edit/move things around. It feels like the app has been made to get out of your way and let you write.

Hey Leo, I started the same exact kind of note book in 2012 on my own, just because I was having so many different creative ideas. During that time I've written over 380k words, or about 900 pages of purely creative and new ideas. But, its not very organized and thats something I want to do one day, but now since its so massive it will be quite time consuming. I also find that I don't have time do do anything with all of this accumulated knowledge because I think of new ideas constantly all day long, and then I have to write those down. So, I'm too buys thinking of new ideas and incites to go back and organize or do anything with it. Your right, it never ends and just speeds up overtime.

    • @shitmandood
      @shitmandood 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Maybe you need to turn off the idea generator for a couple of weeks so you can organize all of that shit? Otherwise, well how will you find anything? What good would it be for you or anyone without organization?? The whole point of One Note would be to prevent rambling & losing track of it. I can already do rambling with Sublime text. Write a bunch of shit down, never find it. Although I can use findstr from CMD prompt to search all my notes, but I would then need to know what it is I'm searching for. Perhaps OneNote has some searching mechanism.
It might be best to export all your existing notes out of OneNote, start with a clean slate & start setting up the books & tabs. Then start pulling in data from your exported notebooks to copy into the right places.

ok man, I'm running a full commonplace book now, in onenote just like you. It has allowed me to integrate my journal and all my projects and notes in one place. The links you can make between documents are amazing, and it gives you the chance to really get a solid life overview because of the tiers of organisation. Thanks!

  • @tricap96

I am finally beginning to use this, though not exactly as recommended, but close. If anyone was thinking they’d be ok with keeping their CB in the cloud, it doesn’t seem like a terrible idea. I just realized Google Drive has interlinking, continuous saving, and multiple document types. Although it’s missing the multi-tool aspect of each sheet, I think it might work for me. I am trying this with my iPad but listened to Leo’s advice about a real keyboard, which is right on. Being able to type accurately and fast is key. The brand Zagg makes a bluetooth keyboard case that I’m finding really great, and with iPad mini, I can carry this thing in a cargo pocket or of course backpack anywhere I go. I am loving this idea in general and I’m already finding that the act of putting things in and of interlinking does something akin to handwriting in helping me make mental connections that parallel the links. Many thanks Leo!!!

hi Mr Leo. awesome channel you've got here. my experience with trying to make a commonplace book is whenever I start my mind never stops. I can't sleep because my mind races off into creativity. I have even resorted to put it under my pillow and wake up at odd hours to write. I had to put an end to it. but overall it was an enjoyable experience.

I'm still using it since them and it helps me to keep things much more organized and then I'm able to reach the information that I want much faster and also work on then when I have some insights. Using it in my personal and work life.

Thank you for this! I had never even heard of a commonplace book until someone (briefly and indirectly) mentioned it in another video. When I went to seek out more information, your video came up.
I don't know that this is something I'd have the energy/inclination to do. But I found it all fascinating. What I'd really like to do is find some of these types of books that people have kept in years past! When you mentioned that at the start of the video, my mind went wild. I'm way too lazy to do this for myself. But I would love to see what others have done with it!
Again, thank you. This has been a revelation. I can't believe I had never heard of this concept or even the term.

I feel like Leo did this video more like a Blog. I would focus more on the topics of writing the notes than on showing my personal way of doing it. But again this maybe is helpful for people who dont have any idea from where to start. Alot of people probably will try to replicate his Commonplace book ,starting from buying a laptop like his. I think using OneNote is the main advice in first place. I am using it on my phone , and since im carrying it everywhere , i can always add something emmediately.

Last night I was laying down thinking about trying to start writing in a journal again, so this video really came in clutch. Wouldn't recommend using it JUST locally. What if you accidentally lose your laptop on a train or the hard drive goes haywire? your entire life's work is gone down the shitter. I have one note with cloud. Even if I lose my primary source of input, all of my data is still backed up and can be restored when I buy a new PC/laptop.

Problem is that there's no such thing as 'the cloud'. There's only a bunch of hard drives you don't own, maintained by people you don't know. Ideally, you'd have a copy locally AND somewhere in the cloud. But whatever you use, make sure you can use it locally, even if you use it in the cloud most of the time. Cuz you never know when they're gonna kill a cloud app, and then you're shit out of luck.
Oh, and unless it's encrypted, don't store ANYTHING in the cloud that you wouldn't want in tomorrow morning's headlines.

15:32 I literally almost spit out my drink when he was going on about how you need a good old fashioned keyboard. A lot of people these days can tap out on a touchscreen keyboard as fast as, or faster than, I can type on a real one (and I'm quite fluent in QWERTY touch typing). I share Leo's personal preference, but times change.

I highly recommend the latest version, which is for free by Microsoft. First, I thought that it is not so cool because the tabs are all on the side, but I love the cloud solution and that you can access it from anywhere. That's a major plus, I used to do the BulletJournal, but now I can always have access to my thoughts. Plus you can easily import evernote into ON :)

If this helps anyone, Microsoft have recently ended security support for OneNote 2010. I personally find this version of Onenote superior to the newer versions (2016, 2019, 365). Due to the lack of security updates, I run Microsoft OneNote 2010 inside a virtual machine (you can run this inside VirtualBox, VMWare Workstation etc), disconnect the virtual network adapter and the end result is an secure, offline version of your Commonplace book. This one virtual machine is then backed-up daily and runs inside RAID 1 on a primary machine, there is redundency here. One could take this further with an off-site back-up of the virtual machine, in the event of a fire or disaster like backing-up your own Library of Alexandra.
With the advancement of technology and operating systems, virtualizing the OS with OneNote 2010 you can easily transfer the virtual machine to a new device if needed. This may come in handy in 10 years time.
I was recently on the quest to find a Linux alternative to Microsoft OneNote 2010, I hope there is a software product with the exact same functionality as OneNote 2010. If there is, I will be jumping off the springboard to the gold mine!

I am currently forced to use the Mac OSX because of programs like Logic Pro and QLab (which is used a lot in my school work). I found a decent alternative to OneNote. I have been using GrowlyNotes. It works very similar and cost only $5. You can get OneNote for free on a mac but you can only store your notes on Microsoft's cloud platform OneDrive. I like the idea of keeping everything local. The internet is always changing. You could link a video that get's taken down or a whole website might go down.
    Thanks again Leo!

Really good advice to try and avoid the cloud based solutions for storage and also avoid subscription based software.
The last thing you want is to lose access to your work because a company shuts down or discontinues the software you are using and have no way to migrate the data out of it easily, if you can even still access it. It would be like someone removing a chunk of your memory.
If people go down the cloud route I'd say only use something that lets you take a local backup copy that you can also use locally if needed. I believe OneNote will let you do this.
I'd also say with anything like this it would be a good idea to make regular multiple backups in case something goes wrong. It would be easy to end up with a large dataset and with lots of regular saving a problem is much more likely to happen, plus laptops can easily be lost/stolen.
I wasn't aware of the term Commonplace Book. I've been trying to figure out something to do this but not been happy with the software I've tried. Most of the software is either task management based, journal based or more of a scrap book. A structured repository of information is what's needed. I'll have to give OneNote another look.
    Thanks for the ideas :-)

Great Video Leo! I've been following you for about 2 years and you have had an huge impact on my personal development. So thanks for your massive work and keep on doing because you do extremely well. So taking notes is an important step in developing and I underestimated it quite long. But since I stared it, I always feel like it should be stored in one common place but never found the right application for it. OneNote looks extremely powerful but for some reason it's not as good as it used to be years ago. Even it's free, you cannot store your files on your Mac and running Windows for that would be an option but, since it's just a note takin app, I don't see any point in that. So for all Mac users I did some research and tried a couple of programs such as Outline, Evernote and even OneNote for Mac. What bothers me a lot is that none of them can handle complex tables which are my bread and butter in note taking. But I found sth. which suits me and it's even greater than I thought. all Mac users should check out Scrivener 3, which is actually an app for writers but it has extremely powerful organizing skills. It just costs around 45$ but I think it's worth spending it because at the end it will save you a lot of time. There is a 30 days trail version available. So I hope I could help some desperate Mac users, like me. I don't get any money from them so it's just my personal opinion since there is no better alternative when your structure gets a bit complex.

You went nicely into the history of it, but there's an aspect that you missed. The actual origin of the term commonplace. Commonplace books eventually became the source of index multi-dimensional scrapbook / journals. But the word commonplace actually comes from the tradition of classical rhetoric, a common place is a turn of phrase that's commonly on the tongues of people around you one of the aspects of good rhetoric is making use of pathos, and emotional appeal to audiences, and there are certain rhetorical techniques that evolve essentially using commonplace turns or phrase, things that people are commonly referring to. Because they're sort of shortcuts to influence. so a commonplace book would be a place that a thinker, an author, in order would jot down common places, so to speak, that he heard on the tongues of people in taverns are in markets, or else he was about as well as things collected from books, hence the copy work of taking extracts, excerpts from books and speeches, later newspapers and journals. This eventually evolved into a much larger sort of self-cycle PDF project. And it wasn't only done by enlightenment era thinkers and thinkers in the west. Aspects of commonplace bookkeeping, they'll call by other names, also existed in the middle east. And in the west of practice actually goes to the Middle ages. At least the late middle ages.the deeper one digs into their history, the deeper one goes into the history of Eurasian intellectual thought
