Do you have to help them calve. I'm not sure what to expect exactly later in May. I don't think my cow will have a problem because she is bigger than my bull but I'm still not sure what to expect.
I have never had to help a Dexter calf. And my bull is bigger than all the cows. Anything is possible but my bet is it will happen with no problems. Even my first time heifers have been fine on their own. Thanks for watching.
@@dexterranch In ten years I pulled one calf from a heifer. It was two hours in and I should have pulled sooner but I did watch her to make sure she wasn't distressed. and confirmed position early. She did fine on her own the next year. Heifers are at a bit more risk as described by Heather Smith Thomas in her book Essential Guide to Calving.
My vote would be for grass, but I will be making a taste test video with my family when I can get my hands on some grain finished. I’ve never tasted them side by side on the same day.
Hi Shaun. I am currently going through 6 bales a month. It does waste less hay, but it makes it difficult for them to feed, and it hold a lot of moisture in the bottom ring because it’s completely closed. The hay that is at the bottom is composting, and I don’t like that. The cows all got diarrhea at the beginning of winter and I’m pretty sure it was because that feeder allows the hay at the bottom to go bad. Overall I am not sold on the design. Specially for the money.
Hi Cathrine. This feeder 100% without a doubt reduced the amount of hay that falls outside of the feeder. That beings said it has a lot of other down falls that in my opinion make it not worth the price. I still need to do a follow up video but the reason I don’t make them eat the hay left in the bottom is because the bottom hold so much moisture that the hay in the bottom is bad. It’s composting down there. The overall design also makes it difficult for them to reach down to get that hay anyhow. Long story short not impressed. Hope all is well with you.

Get a ballast or counter weight for when you are moving the bales.

Any final thoughts on which is better, grass or grain finished Dexter meat?

What would be the differences in time and costs to finish off the cattle?
Dose that feeder work good do they wast less hay? How many bales do you go through In a month?

@@dexterranch I doubt there is a great deal of savings if you don't make the cows eat more of the hay at the bottom before putting out another bale.

That’s the case with any front loader I’ve had. It’s a small farm. I know my way around lol.
