I knew Mike Starr bass player from Alice. Went to HS with him. My uncles best friend. I can tell you , he was an avid listener to Scorps, Black Sabbath, early Rush, and other metal music. I spent a few nights hanging out with him in his room jamming to older Scorps, Sabbath etc...and getting...well you know.
This whole album was such a stoney ride. The Zoo will zone you out if you partake in the devils lettuce 🤘🤘🤘This was one of the cassettes\cd that I bought many times. I wore out like 4 cassettes.
The song sure sounds like proto-grunge. But Neil Young's Rust Never Sleeps was 1979. It led to him becoming called the Godfather of Grunge. Some say grunge is a mix of Heavy Metal and Punk. So this song sure counts as a source.
I've seen Scorpions play this song on several occasions, and it always hits hard... It's hypnotic, even when playing it on guitar (which I did in a couple of bands)...
Killer stuff I haven't heard in AGES, thx for that. "The Sails Of Charon" is one of their best rockers. Every time I play it for others they're almost always like, "How the hell did I ever miss this metal masterpiece"? The 70's rocked harder than most people think. The reason WHY? Because testosterone levels in boys and men were MUCH higher than today, but I digress ;)
All these years, it's still hilarious. You two, with two scraps of a story, try to make a novel. If I'm hearing you right, you think this a. came out in the 90s and b. ergo, they must be trying to sound like The Deftones. Well, this came out in 1979 or thereabouts .(I always mix up this album with the Lovedrive album. One came out after the other and they were very close together.) Both records are stellar, like most Scorpions records, but if you truly want your mind blown, go back, if you dare, to their first album, a Pink Floyd ally called "Lonesome Crow". Hear the musical madness that was 17-year-old Michael Schenker. Or if not, stay on this record and check out "The Zoo". FM radio staple. Stay off the radio hits. You'll love 'em!
Their entire first album, "Lonesome Crow" from 1972 is just like this. I listen to it start to finish ... WITH headphones. You'll absolutely love it. Or your money back ;) Think Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd all rolled into one.
Great reaction guys!! I know it's incredible to think, released in March 1980 - but such a progressive, grungy sound - these guys knew how to rock!! The song prior to this on the album is The Zoo, and is another absolute MUST!! These two songs finished the album - what a one-two punch! If you think this album cover is suggestive, check out Lovedrive or the 'original' of Virgin Killer! This is tame in comparison. Scorpions, especially mid-80's and before, were absolutely on FIRE!!! Cheers from Canada, eh!
Scorpions were SO influential to Many different musicians! They were not only brilliant at keeping up w the times, they continuously set the bar higher for everyone around them! And I agree w the many people saying to check out The Zoo!! But if u want a truly exceptional experience, their ENTIRE 2000 album Moment of Glory, recorded w the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra is worth Every minute!! 🤘😝🤘
Can't go wrong with The Scorpions - any era, any stage of their loooong career, always something interesting, always about the music - 'Another Piece of Meat' is a stand-out track. If you google the reverse of the Album sleeve the artwork will make sense.
I think those grunge bands may have taken some inspiration from the Scorpions. Most of those guys probably grew up listening to a lot of those bands. You guys really should check out some 70’s Scorpions next. Check out the song We’ll Burn The Sky. It was cowritten by Uli Jon Roth and Monika Dannemann, who was a girlfriend of Jimi Hendrix. I think the song may have been loosely written about him also.
If you want a treat, check out '70s Scorpions with Uli Roth on lead guitar! Nothing against Matthias Jabs, but Uli had a vibe, and he did some lead vocals occasionally too.
No they did not invent grunge. Just because a song is slow; doesn't make it grunge. This whole album is amazing. This is the album that got me into hard rock and metal when it came out.
I think spinal tap got their concept from this album Cover smell the glove about a woman on all fours naked with A leash and A dog collar around her neck sniffing a glove. The record company made it a black album cover instead. But believe me the original album cover it was not a glove.😅.. This looks like smell the dog and the beer
You can NEVER go wrong with scorpions. They are on the level of iron maiden to me.
The scorpions over their lifetime has had so many hits that cross many genres, but they almost all kick ass.
Thanks Guys!
The Zoo, from the same album is another slow, heavy groove.
1980 scorpion's were ahead of their time back then.
China White is another great 80's track that's got a great riff.
They stand the test of time honestly, some timeless melodies
Definitely great song
China White was the 2nd choice I requested 😊
Great Band.....some timeless tunes with great guitar work.
Scorpions were one of the greatest bands out there. The album World Wide Live it one of the best.
In trance is my favorite but they have so many magical songs
Mine too!

Me too back in the day.
this is 1979 HardRock era
Wow can’t believe y’all reacted to this! Bad ass song bad ass. 🍺🍺
🔥🔥🔥😁
The beginning reminds me of Black Sabbath before he starts singing.
Scorpions play everything from psychedelic to reggae. Classic metal, hard rock you name it. Their 70s and early 80s catalog is very diverse.
The song sure sounds like proto-grunge. But Neil Young's Rust Never Sleeps was 1979. It led to him becoming called the Godfather of Grunge. Some say grunge is a mix of Heavy Metal and Punk. So this song sure counts as a source.
Memories of hot-boxing my car in high school days of the early '80s..lol. Thanks gentlemen!
This band deserves more credit. Testament does an excellent cover of this on Dark Roots of Earth.
I still have the 1rst two Testament albums🤘🤘
Great to see you guys reacting to this song! So many reactors missing out on this banger!!
Coast to Coast is such a favorite for me. I just met Uli Roth and his daughter recently and had him sign my Tokyo Tapes album! Best dude ever!
The ZOO is a must do Scorpion song.. Hairwigs for this song lol.
Thanks again for reacting to one of my favs fm back in the day! My other Choice(s) China White & The Zoo are right up there too. 😊🖤
I've seen Scorpions play this song on several occasions, and it always hits hard... It's hypnotic, even when playing it on guitar (which I did in a couple of bands)...
Great band, brilliant albums and even better live.....their early stuff was just as cool, try The Sails of Charon....with Uli Jon Roth on guitar 🎸.
Entire album smokes!!!!

such a killer, underrated Scorps tune
Listen to Don't make no Promises (YOUR body can't keep) Scorps same album....
My favorite from this album.

I was 18 years Young when this album was released man as soon as I heard it the whole album was fire and yes I fired one up before I put it on
Need to listen the scorpions " the zoo"
My personal "Wake n Bake" Masterpiece!!!
Should check out their hit "The Zoo"

Morning guys! Such a smooth but heavy sound! Good song!! Love scorpions!❤

You should listen to something off In Trance. Amazing early Scorpions.
Liked for the “hair” 😂😂
Scorpions - China White, if you watched ECW in the 90's, it sounds like Sabu's entrance Theme
I first heard this song in the movie The Wrestler. Marisa Tomei was dancing to it
Guys,.........the opening riff of "The Zoo" is fucking awesome! You have to do it. And Smokey, do a line of meth and fucking open your eyes lol!
70s Scorpions Rules!!
The Zoo - same album. Has a beat like a blacksmith hammering on an anvil. Oh, and check out the cover of Love Drive, ;)
I always call that beat a strutting tempo.
Smoky looks even more smoky than usual! 😂
what I feel is the best jam on the album ,"don't make no promises "!
If you want a treat, check out '70s Scorpions with Uli Roth on lead guitar! Nothing against Matthias Jabs, but Uli had a vibe, and he did some lead vocals occasionally too.
Listen to "The Zoo." Or "Don't believe her."
No they did not invent grunge. Just because a song is slow; doesn't make it grunge. This whole album is amazing. This is the album that got me into hard rock and metal when it came out.
Killer song
Definitely an Alice in Chains vibe. My first listen too. Cool song. I was into prog rock and playing pop rock in a band at that time. 🤘
