wonderful episode👏🌟I got a great tip from a grower of trichocereus pachanoi. He grows his seeds the same, but once seedlings are getting bigger they can start a cycle of slow growth, so he carefully lifts the seedlings out with the soil intact and adds more growing medium and places them back in undisturbed. I took that advice and my echinopsis hybrids have resumed growing again and with vigor🙏

I have found that leaving them in the bags for 3-5 months, if disinfected properly *clean trays, microwave soil, use distilled h2o etc) before both accelerates growth and makes care much easier until they are a bit bigger. the barrel cacti i grew were 1/2 inch in diameter after 4 ish months at which time i removed them and watering schedules were less crucial. Give it a shot or maybe you have and have experienced differently?

Hi, thanks for sharing!.. i want to askx what is the best place condition for melocactus? Some people said, it would be best in full sun (direct sunlight) to thrive, but some people said it in shade light (indirect sun). I know dessert cacti need strong light

Why make holes at all? I mix powdered cinnamon into the top half inch of soil, then sprinkle some more on the soil after I've levelled it. Depending on the seed viability, all of mine that germinate grow happily in their enclosed system until I gradually remove the tops of my containers.

Why dont you make your own channel then, and show us all exactly how you do it this better way…..im guessing once he opens the bags the holes allow air flow and prevent damping off.

Hi Brian thank you! I make and sell seed starting mix and it’s mostly organic with 30-40% pumice. I use rain water because it rains a lot here in south Florida. I also sell a lot which includes drainage, soil, Seed Pods (containers for germination) and even rainwater 🤓 They’re on my website www.eastcoastcamanchaca.com

Can you please describe of what your seeding soil mixture consists? Or better yet, if you have the time, maybe make a video one day on your cactus seedling mixture and/or your general cactus soil mixture.
Out of the 25 Ferocactus Stainesii I planted, only 7 seeds sprouted. Was kinda hoping for more but it’s my first time ever planting any cactus seeds at all.
Out of the 12 Melocactus Broadwayi I planted, only 2 spouted. Kinda sad about that cus that’s my favorite genus.
I planted the Fero on 7/15/2020 and the Melo on 7/16/2020. I keep them on a heating mat still and still keep them under 100% humidity (or covered at all times). When should I start opening them? When they’re 3-4 months old or should I start acclimating them now by opening the lids just barely?
    Sorry for all the questions.

in wintertime, my house never gets above 67F. for my veggies, I use a heating mat with a thermostat. I can set the temp anywhere between 55 and 95F. so, I'm wondering what optimal germination temps are for cactus seeds. its the only way I can jump start the growing season.

You should look into pasteurizing your soil instead of sterilizing. Pasteurizing kills the molds spores and unhealthy stuff while leaving the beneficial bacteria and food. It’s used in mushroom cultivation. You can easy do this if you have a rice cooker. The digital ones are nice just set your temp between 140-165. The older rice cookers normally have two settings warm or hot. Most warm options will keep it at 164-165. Just fill with a little bit of water and put your soil in a bag and pasteurize for two hours!

I’ve used Mason jars in the past. A Turkey bag would work, or a myco bag. I’ve found pasteurization or sterilization isn’t necessary though over the past year. Captan50w fungicide you can use if you have any bad molds. Normally they come from the seed shell
