I sent my husband to the computer to order a vari-dent reed before I even finished watching your video. You made my dream fabric. I wish I lived next door to you so I could teach you to sew. You will get the hang of it. They should pay you for demonstrating this! XOX
@carld9021 I'm so glad you got something out of watching the video. I'm sure you'll create many wonderful things with your reed! I really need to dedicate some time to learning to sew.
Thank you for this video. It’s exactly what I was looking for as I just purchased the vari dent reed and wanted to see some examples. You did a great job highlighting the process and describing your experience. Looking forward to more of the same from you! Beautiful fabric!
I'm so glad this was helpful for you, I have so many ideas for the varident that I want to explore and I'm going to try and record those experiments too!
Well I'm glad you got something out of watching. I think with rigid heddle looms, there's not a HUGE amount of information available. And a lot of what is available which is quite specific and requires a bit of foundational knowledge to understand. Happy weaving ❤️
Thank you so much for making this video!! I really want to make abstract weavings that are more about texture and color and of course there’s no such thing as a pattern for that sort of thing so basically I’m struggling to find makers who are branching out of the box and want to experiment and have some fun. I live far away from the fiber community and really depend of TH-cam to learn and share experiences. I hope my current project comes out half as good as yours!
@lindas5964 sounds like we're in a similar boat! There's so many different elements that you can bring to a piece but I think that maybe makes it harder to start something. I have a few ideas for other pieces that I'm wanting to start. I'll try and share them too 😀
I’m a hand spinner too and make art yarn for weaving. The vari dent is great I slightly felt when I wash my weaving with art yarn. My opinion is it helps to stabilise fabric. Pretty piece of fabric.
I just got a veri dent reed and like you, am looking for examples of using it. So Thank You! and your finised project is gorgeous! I also have art yarn I'm 'scared' to use ;) so you've given me some inspiration :D
Such beautiful fabric! Hand-sewing would work better than a machine, I think, because you would have more control such that you would be less likely to snag the fabric. The reenactment community has many weavers and sewists who are good information sources.
It's just so beautiful, the colours and the texture are awesome. I also wanted to learn to weave to use my hand spun. But so far I haven't been very brave to use the handspun for the warp. You are an inspiration, I will definitely be giving it a go. Thanks Leonie 💗
As long as it's strong enough to take a bit of tension, you should be fine! Give it the 'tug test', and if it can take a bit of pulling, you should be good to go!
Gorgeous fabric!! And yes, I am a weaver and it has given me some ideas. I need a varident reed. Thank you! (Edited to add: I also sew, and the sewing machine isn’t hard!! Just keep your fingers away from the needle and pay attention! In more than 30 years of sewing the one and only time I sewed through a finger was when I paid more attention to what was going on around me than to what I was doing, and I had my fingers too close to the needle. You need them close, but not too close.)
Just found your channel. Love that you shared the verident. I bought one and haven't used it but will now you have inspired me. Your sewing machine is a friend, and thanks again, love the core spinning in this stunning fabric. Debs from Down Under
Hi this is the first time I have watched your vlogs and I really enjoyed it. The fabric is stunning. I have only started weaving in the past 6 months and I think a variable heddle will be on my Christmas list. 🧶
This looks fab and the sections you highlighted were actually lovely as it varied the texture and created even more interest. Love this video as there’s lots of newbies out there. I need to dust off my various dent reed that I haven’t tried yet!!!! X
Bravo! That looks great Marcus. I think a wash and iron will do wonders for the overall squaring of the fabric. Possibly an interfacing for the sewing process. I love it, love it, love it!!!
Thank you so much for sharing this video, as I also bought a Vari dent for the same reasons and haven’t used mine as yet but will definitely give it a try. Your piece of fabric turned out absolutely beautiful well done.😊
Fabulous fabric in a totally luscious color combo! Enjoyed your video very much… can’t wait to see what you come up with next… def keep going… make friends with your sewing machine… you’ll be glad you did…cuz then, the sky’s the limit! Greetings from the rural countryside of New Hampshire (East Coast - New England area) USA! 🧡🧡
Thank you so much for sharing your process with us! I am a super beginner and have been looking for examples of art yarn weaving as well. Your video was very helpful :)
@jaimie.mathis ah thank you. I'm glad you got something out of the video. The options are endless with art yarn weaving but it can be kinds difficult to plan without some inspiration/examples
Absolutely love it!!! ❤ I am stringing my loom up again tonight! I have been drooling over the vari-dent system for awhile now but I may just have to get it!!
This is absolutely beautiful. Your corespun is SO lovely, and the slight variations in the blue made it mesh with the rainbow and texture of the handspun than a perfectly monochrome yarn ever would have, I think. Now I'm very tempted to get that reed, because I need to try this for a blankey T.T
So happy this video popped up on my TH-cam feed. As you mentioned, there is very little info and examples to be found on weaving with this heddle. I also bought this along with my loom for the same reasons you mentioned. I can see why you were so pleased with the results. BTW, the sewing machine really is your friend. It's just a friend you fall out with now and again :-) Thanks for sharing.
I absolutely love that fabric! So beautiful. And don't worry about the studio. I've been dragging everything out and sorting, so mine is totally trashed right now, lol.
ohhh that's awesome :D Marcus you make me want to order new accessories for my loom now :) you'll be fine with your sewing machine. Practice a bit first on something else..... A FEW MINUTES LATER....i may have ordered something..oops.. :D
Your fabric looks great. Thanks for sharing. Did you know that there is a variable reed available by schacht that allows for individual dents rather than blocks, and it fits on an ashford loom. I have just recently bought one. I wanted much more control over how many warp threads I had in what size I wanted. I have yet to try it. Unfortunately I am procrastinating because I cannot choose my project or what yarn to use. Choice can be such a pain lol Did you also know that a combination of using thicker scrap yarn and not beating in between pics can actually help to spread out your warp quicker. So passing the shuttle 3 or 4 times before beating helps sort the warp much easier and quicker. I hope this helps but feel free to ignore if it is not
I did not know any of these things! I'm still so new to weaving I am so grateful for any tips thrown my way, thank you! I'm gonna look into the schacht reed & will try the no beating tip on my next project 😁
Your selvages are really nice! You're making me wish my floor loom wasn't stuck in storage. Weird question: Could blocking it (like you do in knitting and crochet) get the chunkier sections to not pop out as much?
Immediate subscription! I have angora goats and just learned how to spin the fiber and could never find a good project for the art yarn I’ve been spinning. Love this! Do you have a recommendation for how to get into weaving ?
@gabestroh2149 well thank you so much! I totally got into weaving for a way to play around with art yarns in a way that will show all their unique features the best. I'm still definitely a novice with weaving, but I decided to go with a rigid heddle because it just seems a bit easier to jump into as a beginner. The fabrics I want to create are more about the yarn and I'm not hugely interested in weaving detailed patterns that I would need a multi-shaft loom so the rigid heddle was a better option for me.
having to watch this with my eyes shut as I cannot go down this rabbit hole. Really interesting video, thanks lovely! Can you tell me what DPI stands for? Sorry if I missed it in the vid x
This is gorgeous! Personally I really like the added interest that the uneven colour in the teal gives the project. Absolutely stunning fabric.
@traceyallen8286 thank you!

Beautiful! Your channel is horribly underrated. This is fantastic, quality, new-age fiber works. Ahhhhhh, I want a loom so bad haha. ❤❤❤
Aw thank you so much ❤️ I'm trying to learn more about creating videos so that I can better showcase my projects. I really appreciate you watching ❤️

Thank you, I've definitely noticed a difference since felting it a bit. It's more of a cohesive fabric now
I really didn't think I'd like the mix of colours, but it really has worked beautifully. I do love the core spun texture.
As skeins I don't think they look great together for some reason skeined up it looks super yellow?!
I just got a veri dent reed and like you, am looking for examples of using it. So Thank You! and your finised project is gorgeous! I also have art yarn I'm 'scared' to use ;) so you've given me some inspiration :D
And, I shouldn’t have watched your video before going to bed. Now all I’m going to think about is colors!!! and weaving!
This happens to me so often! Can't sleep because there's too many woolly ideas buzzing around
I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE those colors!

@@lapoppy4801 I was initially thinking about hand sewing. I'm a lot more confident with a needle and thread than I am a machine.

I found it worthwhile to use some long, thin, silk scarves for the starter picks. Just two rows is enough to spread the warp.
Thanks for the tip!

I held out for so long but gave in eventually haha. DPI stands for Dents Per Inch. The dents are the wee holes/slots in the heddle.
