In this film I am back at Dunwich Wood in Suffolk looking for subjects to photograph during the autumn season. The film starts off as a bit of a wildlife and nature walk as I discuss and find some useful things to look for when out with the camera. After a little while I find my first subject, which is then swiftly followed by a second and then a third and on reflection, I am very pleased with the resulting photographs. All of them are beautiful intimate scenes and each to me would be worthy of a place on my wall! All in all, it was a very enjoyable morning with lots to see and do and not a minute was wasted enjoying what nature has to offer.

Simon - I admire Him. I love photography, but I can't satisfy my love of photography like you. Thank you for inspiring me to be creative. I am 57 years old.
So glad you found the pine cone arrangement I left for you. Joking.
It the wildlife narrative you add from your vast experience that keeps me coming back. Well done.
Many thanks Mike. Glad you enjoyed the film and continue to support the channel! The next one might take a while to fit into my schedule!
Just had to stop the film, as you call it, to comment on your use of your macro lens. I have never used my tripod for macro photography, but this is so inspirational. Mostly, I use my macro lens for flowers and butterflies and bees and spiders.... who would have thought that a little dip in the forest floor could have the potential for magic? So beautiful, Simon. Thank you.
Hi Jann...never used a tripod for macro!! I think I'm the opposite and never used a macro without a tripod! I'm pretty sure I would miss focus that critical spot if I were to risk it! Thank you Jann for commenting on here!
I really like those compositions. Nice to see how the photos were taken.
Thank you very much!
Really enjoyed your vlog Simon, lovely to see your enthusiasm and hear your calming dialogue whilst portraying often missed gems of nature. Thank you.
That's very nice of you to say Jim. I got one or two good ones on that session.
Love the 2nd shot and the 3rd even better
Really enjoying making my way through your back catalogue and picking up lots of 'hints & tips' along the way...👍 Thank you.
Be sure to bring them along to the workshop John.
Hi Simon, I am very impressed about that you don't use a flash in your photos. Nice!
Fantastic vlog. Your passion for nature and photography shines through. Thanks for the tips you share.
Many thanks Dave. I do appreciate what is around me.
Loved the pine cones
I am drawn in to your narratives, Simon, and enjoy your videos tremendously. I think sometimes 'natural' photographers are not as appreciated as those who shoot iconic landscapes but they certainly do understand that the sum of little things are what create wonderful landscapes. Looking forward to your next one.
Thank you Al. The small scenes are accessible to all too.
Woo what a video…. Your eye for detail effortless narration and ability to find images all makes your videos very natural and appealing. I think of me, you are the best reader of the forest and I was feeling as if I am there and assimilating the environment. Love all the images.
Thank you Krishna, that's so kind of you to say.
I’m having a wonderful time going back to watch earlier episodes which I have not seen. It is encouraging to see how you can get such beautiful images from such simple subject matter. The pine cone shot is brilliant.
Yes, it's similar to the recent one I did but it just goes to show how one subject can provide so many different opportunities!
Dear Simon
I for one enjoy it most when you do this type of vlog, with detailed narrative. It shows the knowledge you have and willing to share with us, so we learn from you. They also show some of your excitement and passion for the environment which I find rewarding.
The images were fantastic and just wish you would do more of these. This I have added to my favourites. Look forward to the next.
See you out there!
Hello Euge Thank you for this! It was one of those days where I seemed to find lots of exciting things when I was least expecting them and each one was another cherry on the cake!
I guess im asking randomly but does anyone know of a method to log back into an Instagram account??
I somehow forgot my login password. I love any tricks you can offer me.
@Alexzander Tate Instablaster :)
@Javion John thanks for your reply. I found the site on google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Javion John It did the trick and I now got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thanks so much, you saved my ass!
Thank you for the video. Loved all the shots but my favourite was the nest of fir cones.
Mine too Karen. They were so beautifully arranged...and all by nature herself!
Three very nice shot Simon, thanks for sharing.👍
All the best...........Peter.
Thank for being a regular here and engaging Peter!
Simon what a great video with 3 stunning images 👍
Thank you Chris
Nice job Simon. Great image of the pines
Thank you Glyn
Thanks so much for this video Simon. It really captured all the best things about being out and about in the countryside for me. The excitement I still get finding a badger sett or owl pellets under a tree makes me feel like I'm a kid again, walking home with an owl pellet in my hand. I really like it when you give us interesting tips like the one about the sycamore trees and the fungi (could that be anything to do with sycamores inhibiting the growth of mycellium?). Sometimes it is so easy to get caught up in the everyday cares of work etc. and forget to enjoy what's around you. Thanks for reminding me what's important. Elaine
Hello Elaine. Thanks for writing again! I can tell that you too have a life long passion for nature! Did you know that barn owls have a very low gastric PH value and this is why there are so many bones in thier pellets. I actually think you are correct in the mycellium theory! I'm sure I have read this somewhere!
@@SimonBoothPhotography I'd never thought of the gastric pH. Makes sense otherwise the bones would be dissolved. I will never look at the bones in a barn owl pellet without thinking of that now. My Dad's foot had much the same effect when I was a kid when he stood in a tray full of bones that I had carefully disected out of an owl pellet I had found. I was so upset.
@@elaineturpin1064 Oh dear! I fear my dad would have thought it was his tea!
@@SimonBoothPhotography Don't think my Dad really understood my obsession with all things nature related either. Please keep this type of video coming as it's so interesting and unusual.
Wonderful images as usual.
Thanks Michael
hi Simon. I love all of your videos, but this is certainly one of my favourites. loved the simplicity of the macro shots.
Thank you for writing. It was nice to bring something new to the table!
Great images... Nice to hear how you composed them...keep up the good work...
Thanks Robert, will do!
Simon - all three images are print-worthy and quite nice. I like the pine cones, quite a bit - they are something I look for while out and about. I think the star of this day has to be the green leaves on the black background - far and away the best images, IMHO.
Thanks Joe for your thoughts. It was the pine cones for me...by a whisker!
Simple but amazing images. Love your channel. Greetings from British Columbia, Canada
Thanks for checking in Rasesh. It's good to have you here!
I think the one that stands out the best for me is the one with small green pant leaves over the dark water, very nice!
Thanks Rick, it was a nice little find!
as always stunning work !!!!!!!!!!
Many thanks again Juan!
Simon once again your presentation are nicely done. Each image has a unique quality that are beautiful to view.
Thank you Jeffrey! It's good to have your comment on here.
Simon, you are truly an inspiration. You’ve helped my photography immeasurably, thanks for all you do.
Wow, thank you Jeff, that's very kind of you to say.
Congrats for nice photos.
Many many thanks for watching
What a great set of photos and lots of knowledge in this one
Thanks Paul. Conveying natures messages is always a pleasure!
I do find your films really inspiring Simon. Your knowledge and indeed your enthusiasm for the natural environment that you are in is infectious. Loved all those images, but for me that green pine cone snuggled in amongst the others is an excellent shot and my favourite
Thanks Jamie. The pine cones were the firm favourite for me too, but I did like the starwort very much until I found the cones! Interestingly, no one has commented on the green one being a little brown on top and why I hadn't twisted it around. Very surprised! I rather like this as it shows the transition from freshly fallen to old and decaying.
Delightful video again Simon. My personal favourite is the "puddle" shot which also provides a lesson for us all. Namely to look, even where it seems unlikely that you will find a shot.
Thanks Martin. I do love coming across these scenes. I learned how to see things like this from an 'old-school' Scottish wildlife photographer called Laurie Campbell. he was very much an inspiration to me in my early years.
Love your video and gave me new inspiration, thanks!
That's really good to hear, thank you!
Another fantastic video Simon 👍
Cheers Andy
Superb work Simon keep them coming 👍.Rodders.
Thanks, will do!
Really interesting. Thanks
Thanks Mike!
Another fantastic informative film Simon. I have total respect for people like yourself who very unselfishly share their vast knowledge whit us to try to point us in the right direction. Thank you.
Thank you for your comment. It's good to share!
Great images Simon
Thanks James
very nice....I'm feeling like a walk in the woods.....
Go for it!
It is clear to see, by the images you decided to make, that it was a peaceful calming walk through the woodland. I know, and love, that feeling of peace. Nicely done, Simon.
Yes Frank, my mind was very clear and focused on nature that morning. I wasn't going to let the pressure of the film get to me!
I just recently found your channel, but I really like your work. Those pine cones were amazing! You’re making me long for autumn :)
Well it won't be long now Robert. Thanks watching and I hope you enjoy catching up on some of the older films too.
I see a Simon Booth video premiere, i click like before I even watch it :)
That's impressive Ross. Many thanks that!
Your content is brilliant, love your macro work also. I mean your camera equipment is insane compared to mine but you dont go on about the gear much which I like :)
@@Brock_in_the_North It's not about the gear Ross and I know that's rich coming from me, but I do have customers who occasionally require very large versions of my images.
Really a great video, Simon! The photo with the lilies is my favourite, but all are great really awesome!
Thank you Christian
Wonderful video, Simon! The three images you came away with are probably my favorite types of photos. I call them "details of nature". Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise!
Many thanks! Terry...details of nature has a nice ring to it!
Great vlog Simon. I think the puddle shot is my favourite, closely followed by the pine cones. Both are very very nice images.
The pine cones for me Phil I think! Thank you!
Brilliant video, Simon. Some really useful information. What a difference it is to see someone who mixes excellent fieldcraft with great photographic advice. Thank you. P.S. Loved all three images, especially the cones.
That's really nice to hear Andrew. Thanks for your kind words of encouragement!
Defened photo’s for hanging on the wall. Great work Simon. Thnx
Thanks Paul
You have tickled my thoughts and given me some ideas. Thanks for sharing
That's good Tony. Time to get out there!
The pine cone shot was my favorite. Really nice.
It was mine too Philip! Thank you!
First video of yours I have seen. Some great tips and lovely images, I’ll definitely be coming back!
Many thanks for your view Peter. It's always great to hear from a first timer to the channel!
Excellent as always Simon, I’ve spent today in the woods, nice cold and wet, but a delight on Red Squirrels. Keep em coming, love the Pine cone shot
Thanks Andy. The pine cones is my favourite from the day too! It's been a while since I shot red squirrels!
Brilliant vlog, it just goes to show what is around us if we only look for it ( or we change the way we look at thing's )
Very true, just slow down, forget about the need to get something and let the images come to you.
I love your highly educational nature videos.. 3 great results as well!
Thanks Ian. Sorry it takes me a while to get back to my comments. I was really pleased with the starwort and the cones. The fern shot I have done many times and felt a bit predictable!
Beautiful work. Again. Great stuff
Thank you again.
Lovely intimate shots. I especially liked the pine cones.
Thanks Larry. they are my favourite from this session too!
Wow Simon, all 3 images are absolutely delightful! I so enjoyed pausing the video and taking in the beautiful simplicity of each! Fantastic attention to detail and stunning! 😊
Thanks David. Your comment is one that I remember well when it came on. It is such a nice thing to read!
I really enjoyed the video, the photographs are very beautiful, specially the one at 14:28 in my opinion.
It was a great morning for photography. A clear mind really helps me to see!
Love all the images enjoyed the vlog thanks for making it.
Great to have you comment Stephen
Great images, particularly liked the water starwort
The starwort was a nice surprise, even more so with with where it was growing! Thank you!
Really enjoyed the detailed explanations of your adventure! Loved the shot last week side by side with the different light and atmosphere. my favorite from the trilogy was the fern, the symmetry was intriguing.
Thank you Robert. It's interesting how we all have different favourites. The fern was not mine, as I prefer the cones. Probably because I have done similar shots with ferns before, whereas the pine cones were a first for me!
Simon Booth I live in Maine in the USA where our state flower is the pine cone and tassels, they are everywhere, likely why I wasn't drawn to them. Funny how we become so familiar with things around us that we can loose sight of how wonderful they really are.
Hi Simon. I'm always amazed at your depth of knowledge in both photography and all things nature related. I've always got my macro lens packed when I'm shooting in woodland and it's been a Godsend many times ! Your images are, as always, outstanding, especially the water starwort composition. Thanks for sharing this really enjoyable video.
Thank you once again Tim. You may or may not know, but professionally I work as a senior ecological consultant and have had a life long interest in nature. I have learned a lot and seen even more along the way.
I have just found your channel thanks to Jamie Overland , amazing, wonderful and inspiring images. At last I have found direction after months of losing my mojo. Big thank you and am looking forward to watching all of your videos 😃😃😃
Thanks Allison, I'm very happy to have you along. Do you know Jamie?
@@SimonBoothPhotography I don't know him personally he mentioned your you tube channel on one of his videos😃
@@allisonshelton4994 I wondered if that might be the case. I should probably track the film down to thank him. :-)

Love that "puddle" shot Simon
Thanks Peter!
Cool video
Outstanding images as always Simon. Great channel.
Cheers Paul for your comment and encouragement.
I enjoyed tis a lot Simon, you got yourself a new subscriber!
Brilliant Michal Thanks for watching!
Lovely Images , Particularly the Pine cones .
Yep, I completely agree with your favourite. Thanks Gary
Reminder "On"! Ill watch it on my way to Work Simon! = ) (NZ time and all that)!
I hope your'e not driving :-)
It’s one of my favourite things to take detail in nature...the images are really nice 👍
Thanks again Gary. It helps to slow right down and really look!
thankyou sir so inspiration
Thank you Abu for looking at the older stuff

Great vlog mate, 3 beautiful shots! Just goes to show what you can get if you have an eye like yours lol 👍🏻 stunning quality!
A walk with a stress free mind and keen eye! That's all we need!
Very interesting Simon, I Love the detail in the smaller things that are often overlooked. Nice Video. As a Wildlife & Nature Photographer and Vlogger it's given me some inspiration. Thanks.
Great to hear Richard. The small details like this are so rewarding when they come together!
Hey Simon, Love these three images. They would. actually make a lovely set of three, printed and hung on a prchaser's wall somewhere prominent. NIce film buddy, and thanks for the endorsement too!
Hey Ewan. If only I could find a purchaser to buy them :-D

Love the pine cones 😍
Beautiful images Simon!!!
Thanks again.
The end results were very good, the fern shot makes me want to get a macro lens
Oooh...get one Tim. I wouldn't be without mine!
Love the last image simon .. really nice throughout :)
It was a great morning's outing!
Simon, As a suggestion. Could you have a simple list of what you describe in your videos and the basic minute mark? This might be more work than is worth doing be it really would be nice to look at and learn what the item really is.
You shouting very nice nature scene
Too true Roman!
The badger digs a relatively deep hole for his faces. The dung attracts dung beetles which do not succeed to get out of the hole. In the evening the badger returns and eats the beetles. Sometimes you see their blueish wings left over glue in those holes.
I have actually seen what you describe Walter, though how much of this falls down to coincidence is a mystery! Badger pitfall traps...I like the sounds of that!
Simon Booth I habe My Information from a Ranger at Müritz National Park
Lovely stuff Simon, great shots and fantastic field guidance, I wish you would do more like this and wildlife, as opposed to landscape work.
Thanks Dave. I recently sold my 1Dx so the wildlife stuff is on hold at the moment. I do love the close up detail type of photography but my passion for feathers and fur is not as great as it once was sadly. I have my reasons, but I won't voice them on here!
@@SimonBoothPhotography Not another one switching to Sony are you, I would do it at the drop of a hat, if only I had the money.
@@davegellatly8974 Oh god no, I'm not a fan of mirrorless yet! I shoot with my Pentax 645z at the moment. I couldn't catch a slug in full sprint with it though!
I really like the starwort and the pine cones Simon. I'm not as fond of the fern image, I like the lighting on it but the balance of the comp doesn't appeal to me as much as the other two.
I agree with you Robert. Ordinarily I would have angled the fern across the frame diagonally, but I have done a shot like that on an earlier film!
I’m watching
You should have joined the chat! x
I love the fact that finding the dung pit of a badger made your day. I sometimes come downstairs in the morning to find on the carpet what we call "thunder buttons" from our cat, and I have to say I'm just not as thrilled about these things as you seem to be. Does that camera only have one card slot (it looks like it on the back)? Great images! Your ability to "see" is extraordinary (most of us would just walk past all that stuff). BTW, I haven't moved a pine cone or leaf or twig in 35 years...well, maybe once.... ;-)
Hi Peter, I think the ecology work makes you obsessed with poo as it's often all we find to base our assessments on! As for thunder buttons (great name)! Our dog manages to keep them stuck to her fur until such time we notice and pick them off...great fun! The Pentax only has a small card slot door, but it takes two SD cards!
The black spots on the sycamore leaves are fungi
You're right peter, did I say lichen?
Ahh, I watched it back. I mentioned fungi here petering out because I was referring to the typical toadstool type, which tend not to be so abundant in our sycamore woodlands! It just goes to show that you are paying attention though Peter!
@@SimonBoothPhotography i have just discovered your. Channel Simon and a delight. Macro and close up photography is what i delight in. But i love all forms. I suppose i am a deep nature lover and out doors man .
Like the boots Simon, they look pretty weatherproof, what make are they?
Made me laugh when I saw your comment pop up Neil. This week I noticed that my boots had sprung a leak :-). Joking aside, I am going to buy another pair because I love them. The make is Grubs and I usually get the Snowline but still wear them year round. They're a tad on the heavy side but they literally go anywhere in any weather. I have considered walking boots so many times, but I am forever crossing streams and standing in water or boggy ground.
Just note that the Grubs Treeline has all the warmth and comfort but has a sole developed more for snow, which has been great for even general use for me. The Treeline has a slightly different sole (still Vibram) and has a ripstop material around the soft upper part. I'm considering these because I think a snag may have caused the leak. The only downside is that they are camouflaged, which I don't really car for.
Great film, it’s really inspirational for someone like myself who’s just starting out in macro/wildlife photography. Just a quick question what tripod do you use. It’s time to upgrade mine and yours looks like the kind of thing I’m after. Cheers, Sean
Hi Sean, my main tripod is a Gitzo, which is the one on this film. Benro do good one's too! For macro recently I have been using my old Uniloc 1600 Major, but they are a bit on the heavy side.
Wonderful video Simon, superb images, did you use any filters when using the Macro lens ? regards,Colin.
Hello Colin! Where you a bit naughty and skip watched? :-) I used the Kase circular polariser on the water starwort.
