Bruce didn't get a back injury from a fight. It was from lifting weights. In the real fight, which his wife Linda did witness, Bruce beat the crap out of the guy, and that was the end of it.

There were some great elements to this movie. It's too bad it's so historically inaccurate. Hollywood squanders talent so mercilessly. Could have been a brilliant biopic.

@R S There are a number of books about Lee detailing his life. There's also a 20 year old documentary about him. And some of the people alive today--including his widow & daughter--who offer details countering this movie's narrative.

"During a gathering between the Black Force fighters from all multiverse the young man self styling as Black Guardian was heard bad mouthing Kaioh (Hokuto no Ken 2 one) and the first Rasho challenged him to a fight, confident he would have thrashed him in seconds. Instead, the Rasho underestimated the black force fighter 1317 and the Black Guardian managed to lock him into a submission hold and force him to tap out!
Black Guardian: "so you think to be the first hitter of Black Force? You are just all brawn no brain"
Kaioh was enraged and needless to say punched him at the back, but the Black Guardian body exploded in... Glass shards! The real Black Guardian reappeared in front of Kaioh in six copies and said:
"And you are a coward backstriker too" then disappeared leaving Kaioh enraged "I will crush you next time... Crush all of your bones and your organs... Crush all the ones that care for you... And crush your reality and any living being dwells in it!!!"
Yeah, Black Guardian had seen Dragon 200 times and knew tricks to deceive his opponent"

4:09 I loved how movies in the 90s had loud, exaggerated sound effects for the fighting.
It may have sounded fake but it added a lot of power to the kicks and punches.
Fighting sound effects these days make a lite tapping sound.
Makes the fight scene less exciting.

There is a more attractive Asian actor, you're looking right at him! It's Jason Scott Lee. Also see Brandon Lee (Bruce's son) and Jet Li (no relation). Jason Scott did a perfect job imitating Bruce, as he was trained by a real JKD instructor, SIFU (with an "I") Jerry Poteet. The fights were exaggerated, and the gymnastics extra, but that was a tribute to Bruce's directing style. This movie was based on his wife Linda's book, "Bruce Lee: The Man Only I Knew." I think it was very well done.

You really don't know much of Bruce Lee I see. "Johnny Sun" was supposed to be a "Wong Jack Man"..ALLEGEDLY..don't know why they called him Johnny Sun. Tells me this fight for the right to teach who he wanted never happened. Thats why there is not a shred of evidence this happened (e.g. no photos, film footage or newspaper articles). Surly the local papers and TV stations would have heard bout this fight...would have covered it either before, during or afterwards. The police would have been there..again before, during or afterwards.
Bruce Lee's fighting ability? No proof there either. He didn't "believe in competing"...thus, his actual fighting ability is undocumented. Unproven. No evidence at all!!
Bruce was never put in the hospital. That never happened either. Nor the fight with "tiny-Sun".
Many said Bruce was from a wealthy family...yet he came to America in this film in the cargo area of a ship and then worked as a dishwasher at Ruby Chow's. Doesn't make sense.
In this film he fought and hurt the police inspector's son? Some one that mattered. Why wasn't Bruce put in jail? Sued?? Why didn't the police stop the fight or een show up at the end?? Never happened.
Johnny Sun appearing again at the Ed Parker tournament for revenge...didn't happen...Wong Jack Man (who he was supposed to be) didn't return to fight Bruce at the tournament. Nor was there a boxing ring. :) Bruce's hair style was different as well. He didn't get this cut till around the time they filmed Enter The Dragon.

Great scene from a great movie but such fight never took place in Bruce Lee's life. He injured the very end of his back warming up with weights before a training session and had to undergo Physiotherapy for a very long time because of that. Linda Lee stated that the fight with Wong Jack Man ended up with this guy running away from Bruce therefore if Johnny Sun was sort of representing Wong Jack Man in the movie this was very much misleading. As a Bruce Lee fan, lets inject Logic into the conversation, if Bruce beat Wong Jack Man why change your style? Also Wong called into a Hong Kong station ready to do round 2, both masters I believe became better after their contest, I surmise it was a draw. Bruce is a brand, and lastly, movies are entertainment so stop complaining.

Here is the truth behind this scene:
Johnny Sun or his sibling never existed, but Johnny Sun is based off of a guy name Wong Jack Man to a match. The match was over disapproval of Bruce teaching Americans kung fu. Bruce won the fight but Wong Jack Man didn't break his back. As you said, he broke his back from excessive weightlifting. Also Johnny Sun's brother is based off of people who would randomly challenge Bruce on the sets of his films.

Luke Sun in reality was a Thai boxe dude physically similar to Tang Po that challenged Bruce Lee for "patriotic" reasons. And started falling back after being hit just like Wong Jack Man.

Would have been nice to see more wing chun and less JKD/gung fu, considering in most interviews with family and witness this was the fight where bruce lee found out his current martial art wasnt practical enough. But i understand this was a hollywood movie and they needed to make it entertaining.

Ihated how this movie was so unaccurate like this movie is like 20% true first of all Linda was there watching him fight, Bruce did not back his back in this fight, and this fight lasted only 90 seconds. this movie was ok but they fucked his story really bad like alot of it if they kept it true 2 Bruce's story they're would have been more fight scenes cuz Bruce kept getting challanged by other Kung fu masters and he would fight them right then and there so yea they fucked up

@Mrjustinqqq You could be right about him not just using only Wing Chun. I only suspect it was the case because he trained in WC the most before coming to the U.S. and I'm sure he was drilled into keeping solid contact with the ground. Therefore, he wouldn't have used jump kicks or high kicks in real fights, especially because at the time, he had weak leg strength. It's why he opted for boxing/fencing footwork over grounded stances in the future, since it worked for him well.

Congratulations, dtpark! You are the first one to spot that! Jason Scott Lee is NOT related. He is actually half Hawaiian, and was raised in Hawaii since the age of 2. Many people think having the same last name limited his movie career before it ever began. His most well known role was as Mowgli in The Jungle Book. He was offered to play Liu Kang in the movie Mortal Kombat, and turned it down. His career really never rose above that point. You win a free copy of The Jungle Book on DVD!

Thing I hate about this scene is most can’t distinguish what actually happened vs the film. They didn’t fight in a disclosed location. Jack came to Bruce’s school and ran for 3 minutes until Bruce finally threw him on the floor and made him give up. Bruce got injured lifting weights not getting kicked in the back. I love the movie though.

Old reply but you are right! I saw this movie when I was a kid and was in awe of that tiger crane stuff - Hung Gar is one of the few fully combat oriented styles of kung fu. Several years later I found a hung gar sifu and watched a class, he said I should shop around, I said "I think I found what I am looking for." Ofc the REAL fight was nothing like this and Bruce's opponent was a northern style practitioner.

The elders were pissed at Bruce Lee, this is true. Because he was teaching Kung Fu for dollars to non-Asians. That was considered taboo. Wong Jack Man was the real life victim of the beatdown. Wong would go on to teach Kung Fu for the money too, although he stayed humble after his loss to Bruce Lee. Wong Jack Man died in 2018 at age 77. As for Bruce Lee's back injury, he tried to lift weights and did not lift properly.

Except this didn't happen in real life. The fight did. But Bruce's back wasn't injured in it. What really happened was that Bruce badly strained his back one morning after an improper warm up while lifting weights.
