I also go to UMass I love it here I just finished my Junior year as a Accounting and sport management major my mean older sister Emily is a alumni from Marist College she studied Biomedical Science with a minor in Spanish and my younger sister Kristyn just finished her Freshman year at Lynn University as a Marketing major

How would you rate the campus/surrounding area in terms of things to do?
Im considering UMass Amherst and I want to know what to expect before going there for 4 years
What stores are available (I love bookstores), what do students often do with their free time, etc.?

Not currently attending but I live in the area and plan on transferring, so I feel that I can provide some insight.
Amherst as a city has a lot to do, especially in the down town. Many stores and parks exist in it. In addition, you can take the B43 Bus from UMass to Northampton; which is another cutesy western MA small town that is similar to Amherst but with a lot more museums and a bit more non academic things to do.
The Hampshire Mall (strip mall) is on this same bus route and usually more than half of the bus exits there. It has familiar nationwide chains mostly.
The bus network can connect you to many surrounding cities; and you can usually take a Coach (long distance bus) to Boston in about two hours, making it a possible daytrip to try a couple times per year.
In addition, New York isn't far and you can theoretically daytrip but would better going on a weekend I feel.
Since you mentioned Bookstores, Amherst has Amherst books which looks to me to be a cutsy bookstore. Lots of resturants exist in the downtown of Amherst and you can walk around and have a fun time there easily.
All of this being said since I have never actually attended UMass Amherst yet, I cannot speak on what students typically do.
