    Despite the 5 place penalty, can't forget the Monaco 2012 pole position he grabbed when he was 43 years old
    On the track where the driver matters the most, he was still there, at the top

      With all due respect for the team, the 2012 Mercedes was pretty crap compared to the various Redbull, Ferrari, Mclaren.
      To put into perspective, the silver arrows won in 2012 the same number of races as Pastor Maldonado did in that year

      Safety car goes in only for the public, it's still a safety car lap. That's why they changed the rule to "overtake only happens after the start/finish line". Back then the rules were "you can't overtake in a safety car lap". So it was clearly illegal. But FIA judged it was open to misinterpretation so they changed it to make it clearer.

    • @zmalik8593
      @zmalik8593 4 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      @@DimitriMoreira it depends on where the pitlane entry is. If the entry is before the last corner, the last corner is fair game. If it is after the last corner, it is after you cross the start finish line. Schumacher did a cheeky move over here cause in Monaco the pitlane entry is before the last corner so technically it was legal. After the race, the stewards clarified that if the race ends under a safety car, no overtaking is permitted full stop. This is why Schumacher got a penalty. It was a grey area in the rules that was clarified later.

      @pizzanjoyer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@DimitriMoreira You're contradicting yourself. Something clearly illegal can't be open for another interpretation. Either the rules state an action or behavior as 100% punishable or the rules are too nebulous at this situation and a grey zone appears. Changing the rules afterwards is fine, but as long as the old, flawed rules are active, no grey zone behavior should be penalized.

      Benetton was cheating throughout the 1994 season, with both their refuelling which gave them a fuel flow advantage and traction control (they had the software to activate it anytime during a race, which was stated by the FIA, plus many drivers were raising suspicion on the constant). The FIA didn't take any action against benetton for the traction control software or use of it, even though the evidence was laid out for them.
      Schumacher also blatantly rammed Hill off in Adelaide to win the championship, with no repercussions for it. You can't say that Hill was gifted a championship on the basis of a two race ban for schumi, both he and benetton had cheated to win their races and championship with the FIA doing nothing

      It was illegal. The rules had been designed to avoid the embarrassment of the safety car leading the field past the chequered flag. Regardless of the flags shown by the martials, because it was the last lap the race was still neutralised, and no overtaking was allowed up to the finish line, at which point the race ends.
      It didn't matter who was in the stewards room, and there were three other people in there, Schumacher broke a specific rule. The punishment would also have been limited to those available in the rules. Just swapping the places back wasn't an available option.
      There was no option to turn a blind-eye to it and accept that the green flags were confusing. He'd broken a written down rule that they drivers are meant to know.

      The wording was clarified because after the Mercedes protest it was found that the teams had different interpretations of the text: "If the race ends while the safety car is deployed it will enter the pit lane at the end of the last lap and the cars will take the chequered flag as normal without overtaking."
      Mercedes argued that the race had not ended, because the cars had not crossed the finish line. Which, without going back and looking through the entire 2010 rule book for the definitions of when the race ends, is literally correct, but goes against the intent of the rule which had been discussed at length by the teams. The safety car returned to the pits because the race was ending, not because the track was clear.
      Mercedes dropped its appeal. That doesn't mean they necessarily wouldn't have won it. However, the move was immediately protested by other teams and a panel of 4-stewards handed him a penalty based on a plain text reading of the article 40.13.

    Still bitter about this. Earlier on in the lap a message had come up saying "SC in this lap" and towards the end there were green flags. Obviously nobody had thought through all the implications of allowing cars to overtake at the SC line. Even though the SC would always pull into the pits at the end of the last lap, you could draw a distinction between the race ending "behind the SC" and the SC pulling into the pits before the end of the race (even if it was just one corner).
    By the second interpretation, the move would've been legal as the SC period had ended before the race was over. But since the rules were so ambiguous, it's bonkers to penalise someone without clarifying them.

See doctorvee.co.uk/2010/05/17/when-is-a-green-flag-not-a-green-flag/ for example. I'm not sure when exactly it was introduced, but it looks like 2009. So thats not the question or the point here. You can not imagine how angry I was because of the decision of the stewards.
      The 2 problems here are:
      1. the safety car went in
      2. THERE WAS A GREEN FLAG (the main problem in combination with point 1)
      Even if Mercedes / Schumacher was wrong, a 20 sec penalty because of a fucked up rule book (the article says they needed 2h 30m for their decision, of course I dont know these details anymore) is just plain wrong.
      They did a mistake, but instead of living with it and corrected the rules, they acted like 5 year old children and pointed in the direction of Schumacher.

    Completely legal. He overtook Fernando when Safety Car was already out of the track and after Safety Car Line. Legal.

    That 20 second penalty was Hill's way of taking revenge for getting his ass whooped by Michael during his whole racing career.

    I bet he could've won the 2012 Monaco Grand Prix if he didn't have that grid penalty

    I think we can all agree that the move was in fact legal and should not have been penalised.

    • @hyort3613

      no, its clearly illegal. Racing only starts the next lap after a safety car came in

    When the SC goes out, all cars can fight for position AFTER the SC line (Wich is at the entrance of pitlane); the marshall shows green flag and the race can continue even is the final lap is closing. You can see that Schumi overtakes Alonso AFTER that line, so the overtake was completely legal. But they decide to put him a stupid penalty

    You can argue whatever rule you want. There are green lights and flags. In reality the stewards were incredibly biased and wanted to see Schumacher fail.

    He used a loophole in the regulations. Safetycar was in and racingspeed was enabled again. It was not illegal. Hill just wanted revenge thats all.
