Half Life 2 is a first person shooter by Vavle that takes place a few years after the first Half Life game. The world has been taken over by Combine and Gordon is awakened by the G-Man to help stop it. It was praised during its relese for its advanced graphics, animation, physics, AI, and storytelling. Now it may not look like games today, but HL2 still has a very compelling story and runs well. So let's take a look at what it will take to COMPLETE Half Life 2.

Interesting how Half-Life 2 has better facial animation than most games who came out around that time, even games that came out 5-6 years later. It's amazing.

half-life 2, TF2, the Witcher 3, and RDR2 are the best games of all time, in my opinion.

Let's be honest, it's details and physics rival most modern day games, even modern warfare 2019.
I actually even think that's true for the first Half-Life too. The only thing in which it can't rival with modern games, is it's graphics. It's not as smooth as the newest CoD, but the rest still feels like it could've been released today

He was playing hard mode. The enemies take a few level in badass when you play that mode.
Hard Mode is always gonna chalk up a lot of deaths, you're supposed to play Easy or at least Normal to get used to playing the game, then unleash your gaming skills in Hard to test your merits.
He played on hard mode on his first playthrough. One is bound to die a lot...
Especially if one doesn't abuse the quick save feature.

@@Fools_Requiem I only found out that quick save was a thing in my second playthrough of the first HL. And I only found out that sprinting is a thing during HL2:episode1. I'm an idiot

Physics are still a ridiculously under-used mechanic in games. Most interactions are scripted which really takes out the discovery,
I get it, physics are kind of unreliable but it just felt weirdly relieving to play through HL2 and Dark Messiah. It's a feeling of figuring something out without getting a pat on the back immediately afterwards.

I've noticed that whenever you announce the result for a game you really enjoy, there's a bit of a metaphorical glint in your eye that shows just how much you loved the journey of the game. That in itself is what makes this channel so much fun, and it's awesome to see that happiness whenever it's a game that I (or anyone else) really enjoys.
I think I saw that in Superman 64 too, but I think it was just a tear of utter despair.
I just watched your Half Life review from 2015 yesterday night and was thinking to myself "Gee, I wonder if he'll review the sequel as well someday." And tonight I'm watching the follow up episode. I love it when things like this happen!
Half life 2 is known for its creative approach to the fps formula, it was innovation at it's finest. It gave birth to many other games and changed the way developers approach level design, characterization and physics entirely. Games like Team Fortress two and CSGO were born because of the half life series and it's source engine. So in a way, we already have Half Life 3 in the form of many other games inspired by it.
"Half Life: Alyx," just got announced, and hell didn't freeze over! It's going to be all VR gameplay but hopefully they will release something with a traditional First Person Shooter interface.

Actually, you can install a mod for Alyx and play it on PC. But I can imagine its more immersive in VR
What's the point of playing it without vr? Just buy a cheap VR headset and enjoy the experience
Massimo I agree. But sometimes thats not always an option as some people dont have the money to drop for a headset or it doesn’t deliver to their country.
But yes, a used VR headset is definitely the best option if you have the resources
Half Life 2 is my favorite game of all time, and I'm so happy you got around to doing a review of it! It's absolutely astonishing the level of detail and polish that went into the game, and how it evolved throughout the years, which makes the lack of a true conclusion that much more depressing. Awesome video Jirard!

I highly recommend people to play HL2 again now in 2018. It has held up remarkably well both in terms of visuals and gameplay. A truly trancedent game

@@zynel413 you know honestly, as much as I get the importance of this game I just couldn't get into it. Like I really tried, I played about 3 quarters of the game and quit after that. Idk what it is either, I think I just never really got into the atmosphere of the game and i really just didnt enjoy the gunplay with the only weapons I liked being the magnum and shotgun, and only level I really liked being ravenholm

The thing with Half Life 2... Modern shooters took so much from it you sort of know the game without ever playing it. But there's still more than enough unique stuff around to have a blast with it.

You know, I've heard time and time again that I need to play Half Life 2. Back when it came out, I didn't own a computer that could actually play it... but I've spent far too long finally owning a computer that can play this classic but never actually PLAYING it myself. That needs to change.

Great video! Sorry if someone has said this already but the tearing on your screen is happening because V sync is off. Turn it on and no more tearing! Only reason to turn it off is for benchmarking purposes, to see how many frames your machine can actually render. Otherwise, no reason to render more frames than your monitor can effectively display, 60fps or 120fps depending on your refresh rate. You won't see the extra frames, also you'll get screen tearing. ANYWAY, loved this trip down memory lane. Great production values on your channel, the motion graphics + music + your timing are all excellent!

Technically, it is cancelled. One of the writers released the whole script online with no repercussions.

If they gave it to Machine Games or Id I would lose my mind. As long as they can restrain themselves when it comes to over-the-top action, I would be fully satisfied with HL3 made by either of them.

Still has the best physics in any fps game. The way the enemies drop and flail about from weapon and explosive impact remains unmatched.

Even though I only bought the Half-Life games about a year ago. I still put them as some of the best single player games i've ever played.
Um, if you don't want screen tearing, you turn on vsync. That's like a pretty basic PC setting.
I am pretty sure turning off VSync is a better option.
Asylum117 well turning off vysnc will increase FPS but will increase tearing of the screen while keeping it on will decrease FPS by a small amount but will decrease , get rid of , screen tearing
Vsync may affect gunplay though as it can delay inputs at times

Tomb Raider on the PlayStation hooked in 1996 and this game when I got a pc really really hooked me big time and this game is the ducks guts and pinnacle of awesomeness.And the striders are just amazing very scary if they were real, oh and great video on one of the top games ever.

Were it 144Hz, it would cap at 144 fps.

there's one game that i pretty much completed, aside from having access to an F-Zero AX Arcade Cabinet for the remaining Racers and Custom Zero Parts.
I'm pretty sure you can get all the racers and parts from the main game without connecting to AX, just by winning all the cups with all the racers on all the difficulties. It's an insane challenge. I've been begging 'Rard Man to complete that game for years.

Have you tried using vsync in a Source game? It absolutely destroys the mouse movement.

@@MadmanEpic vsync always heavily increases input lag; other games are just better at hiding it (usually because they have tons of input lag in the first place lol)
gsync and freesync on some monitors can avoid this; but they still reduce frametimes so they can be suboptimal if you only care about the input lag. simple brute force high fps is the best solution to minimize frame tearing without compromise.

The absolute worst thing about Half Life is that it lays down a map of how to make the perfect game and not a single company ever picked up that map and ran with it. Not one! Sure you got people copying the idea of bringing more story into games and physics. It did move the art of gaming forward. But not one company has managed to emulate what makes it so great.
The most obvious and glaring issue is the idea that you are playing a game where you are in control. Every other game developer forgot this and made cut scenes which are little movies that go between the gameplay to make it seem more cinematic...because they added cinematics. But Valve knew that what makes that really work is when you're in that scene watching it play out. You're not frozen on the spot or forced to only be able to look 50 degrees left or right so you don't miss the cut scene. Valve allowed you to completely miss huge events if you were looking the other way and that really is the secret sauce that lifted Half life and all its spin offs into awesomeness. I still remember the first time I was watching people have a conversation and able to walk around them. Them occasionally looking at me and then talking and going back to talking to someone else. I was in the game. For the first time ever I was actually in a living breathing movie!
I do believe Cyberpunk 2077 may be the next game that works like this but I can't be sure. I hope so. That's what some people describe from the demo. Any developer can pick this idea up and run with it but none of them do because it is incredibly hard. You can just go to a mocap studio and knock out all the beats and then assemble them in 3D software and bolt that onto the game. You have to have everyone working on the game all within the story creation and how that plays out. Such a difficult way to work and I guess a reason why we've never seen it since.
Can anyone think of a single game after Half LIfe that left you in full control through all the cinematic parts we'd today call cut scenes?

i hope with 2018 that the formula for the videos changes.
my friends and I used to look forward each week to a new episode coming out but now they all gave up and now out of all my gaming friends, I am the only one left.
these videos used to be more informative, gave tips and the comedy was fresh.
now it just feels like the guy in the break room going on about a game and you kinda listen because you're both on break. all it is now is 20 minute blurb i'd expect to see on the back of the box and maybe a few notes about the developers.
I just hope that with a new year now here that we might see more amazing completionist and less annoying guy at the office break room
Yeah. I think it started when the spoiler section was removed. Before that everything followed a clear path. 1. What game is it? And basic information, 2. Playing the game, 3. The story of the game and the climax, 4. What do you get for completing it?
But you just can't really do any of that without spoiling anything, so now it's just 20 minutes of vagueness that are more concerned with not letting out a single detail of story than they are actually telling us about the game. So now it really is just that guy from the break room going on "Oh my god i love this game. The controls are awesome, the graphics are awesome, the quests are awesome, it's just awesome trust me!".

This will FOREVER be in my top 5 to top 10 favorite games of all time to me, as well as in my top 5 to top 10 for best video game of all time list for myself. Just brilliant stuff that tackles puzzles, deep science fiction, characters you grow to care about an love, this was back when Valve made great video games for you young fans...... before Steam....... back when valve MADE games :).
