    you have to keep in mind with Ersson that most of the moments that he looked bad were after Hart got charged, especially late February - early March and on, when he played something like 18 or 19 out of 21 games. you also have to consider that he was a rookie, and if he gets something like 60% of the starts instead of 95%, he will most likely look better. he looked absolutely fantastic in a 1A 1B tandem with Hart. through december and january, the Flyers were getting some of the best goaltending in the league, and Ersson was a huge part of that.

    • @jimbo7300
      @jimbo7300 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      Sean Walker was undoubtedly an important player for the Flyers, but this comment just ignores a ton of other factors.
      As pointed out, Seeler got hurt at the same time. Risto was hurt earlier, but was also out. Jamie Drysdale was hurt around this same time period as well. In short, the Flyers defense was decimated and Walker was simply a part of this.
      This was also a month or 2 after the whole Hart situation right about when Ersson playing every game started to wear on him and the flyers goaltending took a major dive.
      I don’t want to underestimate Walker - he played very well for the Flyers and I was happy to have him. Having said that, him not being there was responsible for 10, 20% at most of their downfall.

    Shannon have you been to a game here in Philly? As it happens, the Flyers are playing the Canucks in the home opener.
    We've done that a few times in last few seasons. If you get a chance, attend a game here! The arena was recently renovated significantly, and I'd say Flyers fans are noticeably friendlier to opposing fans today than they had been in the past.

    Couts played hurt at end of year and being a Flyers fan I enjoyed how they played w scoring on transition and an exciting PK w short handed goals . Our PP sucked. Hoping Michkov helps that and Frost finally has someone who can play make with and reach his ceiling. Also a healthy Drysdale on PP w getting better on D w Shaw

  • @Poldylox
    @Poldylox หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    I get some of the reasons why people think there will be a drop off, but there’s also some positives imo. Brad shaw gets another off-season to work with the D, specifically Drysdale. I believe the players still want to play for Torts. You’ve got Michkov, a potential Franchise talent. Plenty of top 6 talent, granted not much game breaking talent, but the potential for a good season is there. The picks at the next draft is a huge bonus tho,l. I expect a lot to happen next year, I understand why we didn’t make many moves this year. The TK situation should be very interesting. Plenty of players that could be traded. Hopefully, this can be a very entertaining season no matter what.

  • @SonofShortMan

    Interesting to hear a grounded outside perspective. I have only a few thoughts from the homer side...
    I think it's unfair to say the Flyers weren't fun last year. In fact, I'd go so far as to say the talking heads in hockey just decided that they can't possibly be fun because of Torts. But this past year, the Flyers scored a ton of their goals on the rush (I'm told this is fun when teams like the Avs or Oilers do it), and spent way more time in the Ozone than in the past 4-5 seasons. How is this not fun? The past season was the first time I actually believed they could win games when they were up or down 1 entering the third period since March 2020.
    The Couts stuff is also kind of asinine to me - I know you didn't get too into it here but still. He wasn't playing to his own or the coach's standard due to missing almost 2 full years and needed time to rest. The media lost their minds because he was just given a tiny piece of fabric to add to his sweater a month earlier. I love the idea of team captains until the media comes in and ruins it for everyone. Let it go, guys. Couts will have a better season this year unless he gets hurt again.

    Next summer will be a real good indicator of where this team is going to be built like. A possible major trade with the amount of draft picks the Flyers have and Frost and Cates being RFA's again and possible Farabee in a trade scenario.
    Ristolainen needs to get dealt and if not possible buyout next summer. Flyers will have over 30m in cap space to work with. York will probably get around what Sanheim got or lower.
    The TK situation is interesting, if the Flyers are having a horrible year do you deal him at the deadline? Do you extend him and for how much? is he worth more than 8m? I don't think so and I would probably only do 4-6 years for him. I just don't want him getting 9+m that we will regret (maybe I'm wrong or get proven wrong).
    Flyers have quite a few young guys that could have potential; Barkey, Gendron, Luchanko, Andrae, Bonk, McDonald, Kolosov, Bjarnason. Some maybes that are still young like; Rizzo, Tuomaala, Desnoyers, Avon, Bump, Knuble, Berglund, Powell, Kaplan, Ruohonen, Pautov, Grans, Gill. And they will keep adding to it Next summer.
    What I'm curious about is if Torts (going into his 3rd year of his 4 year contract) will he be around much longer and who will be the next coach? Would Laperriere make that jump? as he has coached or will have coached a lot these younger guys.
    As for staying in a playoff hunt, yeah would be exciting. Hopefully more offense and better powerplay. But if bad I know the future can be promising, especially with a supposedly deep draft next year and having 6 picks in the first 2 rounds.

    Philly has a deeper offense than people realize, adding mitchkov and having a full season of a healthy drysdale will help the power play. If the flyers even had a middle of the road power play they would have been a secure playoff team. The defense is solid and can improve with internal growth from York, zamula and drysdale. The only question mark I have with Philly is the goaltending and I still feel pretty good about it. I think fedotov will improve he had a small sample size after coming over but I think he’ll show growth. And errson was at times very good for Philly last year the end of season hurt his numbers but he had moments of being awesome. Michkov can play and gives them a Svechnikov 20 goal 40 point first season, that would be good. They have to play him on one of the first two lines.
    I think Ersson isn't the guy, yet anyway.
    I think there are guys here who could improve the offense.
    I like them better still than washington and the Islanders but both of those teams have better, in the case of the Islanders, much better goaltending.
    They are better than Montreal. I think they fall back a little bit. Maybe still stay ahead of Buffalo, and fall behind Ottawa, New Jersey. Maybe finish ahead of Pittsburgh, Washington.
    They have LTIR room with Ryan Ellis $6.25 million and the $5 million for Peterson in the minors for one more year.
    They cleaned up a lot of things defensively last year.
    Poor Couturier seems to be approaching the end early.
    They gave up the second fewest shots against last year 27,1 SAPG just behind Carolina.

    Hard to say but at this stage, I would have to say Philly is not getting in. RIght now, the "givens" to make it are the following (keep in mind some of the "givens" last year fell out): FLA, BOS, NYR, CAROLINA, DEVILS. Those 5 are in. Tampa and Toronto are good bets to get it in..too much talent and good goal tending to not make it. That leaves one spot for Philly, Islanders, Red Wings, Caps, Pittsburg and also assumes that teams like Montreal, Ottawa, Columbus and Buffalo are still rebuilding. For Philly, it's an uphill battel this coming year.

    Flyers fan here. They will have a MAJOR drop off. Torts had them playing well over their heads. There are weaknesses everywhere in the lineup. Chuckles the incompetent Clown Fletcher destroyed the team and it'll likely take another 2-3 years to improve. At this point, their salary structure is hosed and they can't afford to do much. The team has Frost and Coots as one and two C. That is expansion-like centers.

    Hi this is Gord in Hamilton.
    To properly assess an NHL General Manager I like to ignore the top paid players on the team. All GM’s enter the business with an intuitive ability to spot and overpay star players. This does not separate any one particular GM as better or worse than his peers. I mean I could choose and sign Conner McDavid. I’d deserve no kudos for that. I strongly believe that to asses a GM we should look at the bottom 50% of the team as sorted by their pay. This would be, by my definition, one half of the team’s players.
    As an exercise do this sorting for every team in the league. Now we find ways to compare the quality of the “bums and duds team” for all 32 cities. The GM that can reliably select the best low paid players will be rated high in my books. An organization that has a process to continually monitor and compare these bums and duds will also get a high rating from me. They will reliably snag and sign the best of the lower pay echelon. The rest of the league may not know how to do this.
    Alternately, instead of the bottom half players perhaps we could draw the line at say, 4.25 million per year. I’m saying that the best GM has the best team when you consider only those players that make 4.25 million or less.

    Realistically, this is one of the worst rosters in the league. Terrible top 6, terrible bottom 6, terrible defence, terrible goaltending. I've no idea how they got that many points last year, but I expect them to drop drastically.
