Homage to Wilco! Bravo! I got my sister into them before I got into them 20 year ago now and she brought me tickets to go see them so I took sis and she realised at the concert that she knew all the songs and I was just a hanger-rounder. Alas after that faithful night at a Tivoli Down Under I'm a true debutee! Thanks for the music 🎶
This was the first Wilco song I'd ever heard. I liked it and added them on Myspace. I had no clue what the song was about at that time. Then, I pretty much forgot about Tweedy and the boys. It wasn't until years later upon the release of Sky Blue Sky and running into a hip friend at Karma that, I slowly became a steady fan. This song and most of their songs offer more and more each time. Thank you, Jeff and Co.! 💛
My first and favorite Wilco download. I was drawn by the title because I recognize the subject so well. The bassline made me want to hear more of their music. They've got quite a few keepers, for sure. Good, honest rock n roll. Go Wilco! death before disco
I know Im asking the wrong place but does anybody know a trick to log back into an instagram account?? I was stupid forgot the password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me!
hahaha, you know, I use to hate the ending too, but now I love it! Can't really explain it, it just works for me, and clearly it worked for Wilco too. Try giving the song another honest full listening to sometime, you might learn to dig it.
I remember the first time I heard "Handshake Drugs" by Wilco, they construct this flawless complex musical landscape and then descend it into an abyss of anarchy, nihilism and chaos. What a choice to make, are they trying to tell us something?
It's probably Jeff trying to depict his anxiety, panic attacks, and migraines through music. I know that he tried to depict them musically with the noisy guitar solo in "At Least That's What You Said" and the 13 minute drone in "Less Than You Think".
I used to watch it on a regular basis and "poof" - gone. The solo's Nels Cline was throwing down on that Letterman show version were absolutely mind blowing.
I was chewin' gum for something to do The blinds were being pulled down on the dew Inside out of love, what a laugh I was looking for you Saxophones started blowing me down I was buried in sound, taxicabs were driving me around To the handshake drugs I bought downtown To the handshake drugs I bought downtown They were translating poorly, I felt like a clown I looked like someone I used to know, I felt alright Even if I ever was myself, I wasn't that night But it's okay for you to say what you want from me I believe that's the only way for me to be Exactly what you want me to be Oh, it's okay for you to say what you want from me I believe that's the only way for me to be Exactly what you want me to be Oh, I was chewin' gum for something to do The blinds were being pulled down on the dew Inside out of love, what a laugh I was looking for you The saxophones started blowin' me down I was buried in sound, the taxicabs were driving me around To the handshake drugs I bought downtown To the handshake drugs I bought downtown But it's okay for you to say what you want from me I believe that's the only way for me to be Exactly what you want me to be Exactly what you want me to be
I've engaged in many a handshack drug exchanges and it never involved addictions......... I can only afford one addiction at a time. Cigarettes. Only wish it was crack or heroin.
I don't think your post translates well comparing buying cigs to illegal drugs. The handshake conceals the very illegal substance and doesn't draw attention, as the handshake is a common greeting. Seeing as cigarettes are a very legal purchase, there's no handshake needed. Also, no need to go downtown! Your convienence store 30 seconds away will do the trick
So, I've got this girlfriend, Rebecca. Hot, sexy and young and blond. Prettiest thing I've ever seen. Love her from beyond time and space. Loved her before I knew her. Will love her after time ends. Space and condition will never keep up apart. Love you, Beck!
I never got into Wilco. My friend Tom sent me a link to this, while listening I was scrolling through the comments, guess I better get ready to hear some chaotic noise at the end? And then that's it? Man if you want some crazy cacophony noises listen to the end of QOTSA You Can't Quit Me Baby
Can someone explain this to me? Why ruin the end of a really great groove with a bunch of cringe-inducing reverb? Great tune, but they could have ended it in a much more clever fashion.
I think the obvious explanation would be that the song talks about drugs. If I know Chicago...I know there are PLENTY of HARD drugs downtown. It seems fitting that the song would end in such disarray...it's perfect, actually.
The song is perfect in structure, dunno how anyone could critique such an honest and intimate song...its like watching the movie titanic and complaining that the ship sinks at the end.lol
This song brings me back to the one summer when I would walk around my hometown everyday after work. I was trying to beat my own bad habits that year.
How are you doing today?
@@MagnumMH2561 I am doing much better, thanks for asking. 👍🏻
We all have a memory that brings us back

@Zayd Kohen instablaster :)
No beauty in this world can tarnish this poetry. Touches my soul
This song makes me tearful. Beautiful.
You know a story that starts with "I was chewing gum for something to do" is leading up to some depraved activity.
hahaha, you know, I use to hate the ending too, but now I love it! Can't really explain it, it just works for me, and clearly it worked for Wilco too. Try giving the song another honest full listening to sometime, you might learn to dig it.
i SWEAR the beat to this song reminds me of Heroes by Bowie
They're exactly the same chords :P
No they're not
Kinda sounds like Night Moves by Bob Seger too.
Reminds me of With Our Without You.
MEE TOO
This is a fun song to jam along with. Sounds like D G F.
Wow you can even tell the key just by hearing..i could tell the chord progression but not the key
Funny how this is an "Oldie" now. Time flies.
I think the contrast between the two are perfect, I think mostly because the song is peppered with reverby solos...yes reverby lol
I remember the first time I heard "Handshake Drugs" by Wilco, they construct this flawless complex musical landscape and then descend it into an abyss of anarchy, nihilism and chaos. What a choice to make, are they trying to tell us something?
just the drugs kickin in....no biggie
+gurlsingerfan Who was never there when they were young and foolish?
gurlsingerfan it’s left to our discretion

reminds me of being a junkie with my ex junkie gf. the good ol days.
They have many great songs. This is by far their best. I see it as movie. I always see him in a taxi going to Washington Square Park.
That good old handshake in public
this song makes me smile. i love the ending 😌
This is such a good song.
Splendid album in my collection, thanks for vid.
This song ends perfectly. Tweedy knows what he is doing...
I love this song. However, I'm very frustrated that I can't find the version of it them playin' it live on the David Letterman Show.
I used to watch it on a regular basis and "poof" - gone. The solo's Nels Cline was throwing down on that Letterman show version were absolutely mind blowing.
Their live version on "Kicking Television: Live in Chicago" is stellar
I was chewin' gum for something to do

Inside out of love, what a laugh
I was looking for you
Saxophones started blowing me down
I was buried in sound, taxicabs were driving me around
To the handshake drugs I bought downtown
To the handshake drugs I bought downtown
They were translating poorly, I felt like a clown
I looked like someone I used to know, I felt alright
Even if I ever was myself, I wasn't that night
But it's okay for you to say what you want from me
I believe that's the only way for me to be
Exactly what you want me to be
Oh, it's okay for you to say what you want from me
I believe that's the only way for me to be
Exactly what you want me to be
Oh, I was chewin' gum for something to do
The blinds were being pulled down on the dew
Inside out of love, what a laugh

45 people chose the wrong handshake.
It’s a deceptively difficult thing for a band to create a controlled explosion of noise like that.
Exactly what you want me to be
Exactly what DO you want me to be
Ooh Look Out!!❤️
if you dont know about the handshake you dont know about life
huh
awesome song but it brings back old memories
JEB covered this and led me here.

Taxi cabs were driving me around....
we have all been there! is this the same bass line from 'Heroes' by David Bowie?
Absolutely it’s the same bass line
Similar syncopation

Man if you want some crazy cacophony noises listen to the end of QOTSA You Can't Quit Me Baby
Definitely not just you
Yes
someone doesn't enjoy this song?
Sounds like Fleetwood Mac. The song Christine McVie never wrote
Tu as raison, I stumbled into this again after starting a youtube surfing session with 'DREAMS" remixes.
And it's less than one minute of ''noise'', you whiners. It's not like it's Metal Machine Music...
Eh. I love this song, but I still edited it out for the mp3 I put on my phone. It just unnecessary. And it's a full 2 minutes, actually.
The promise of some noise is what's keeping me here tbh
Is that it? Don't get the complaints
@@wreckgar23 haha, same here!
I honestly dont want to fucking ever associate with anyone who hasn't done the handshake once or twice. Who the FUCK are these people?
Can someone explain this to me? Why ruin the end of a really great groove with a bunch of cringe-inducing reverb? Great tune, but they could have ended it in a much more clever fashion.

This is such a great song.
Love your handle! And, I agree hole hartedlee with your expressed sentiment regarding this great song.
i really appreciate that!
