Happy New Year 🎉 Glad DC did those Golden Age Superman Omnibus books most stories no one has read or seen .. hope Vol 8 is out soon. Some great reads for 25 😮
This year for my comic reading I will be getting into reading Green Lantern, I will be mostly be reading Hail Jorden because I saw that animated cartoon and that made me really want to read Green Lantern
I'm a DC guy from way back. The DC's Finest and the DC Compact Comics (at 9.99 for the budget-minded reader) are both wonderful new initiatives. Crisis in and of itself was fantastic. DC editorial messed up the follow through. Perez's Wonder Woman was my gateway into DC post-Crisis. I have been inspired by your Marvel project and will be reading all of the Silver Age Green Lantern through the end of the volume (including the retitled The Green Lantern Corps run). Thanks, as always, for your inspiration and your always enjoyable videos. Happy New Year, Michael!
Here's some fun trivia for you. The "Hall of Justice" was modeled after the Cincinnati Museum Center (Union Terminal). It is still here and if you ever visit, be sure to check it out. It's a gorgeous place.
I loved the Showcase and Essentials volumes. I wish they had continued them. All the new stuff is cost prohibitive but the others were an inexpensive way to read all that classic material.😊
Great list. I subscribed after seeing some of your DC Finest updates. I'm sorry to hear you're unimpressed with Aquaman. He's my favorite hero. The Silver Age goofiness is going to be particularly goofy so if you can embrace the charm of it then I think you can find something to like about it. As a whole, one of the things really working in Aquaman's favor (and I'm sure helped make sure he was continuously published from through the Golden Age) is that his world lends itself to really great artists. He's been blessed with some great artists through the years. Ramona Fradon, Nick Cardy, Jim Aparo all bring their A game and make the sea king's adventures just incredibly popping and fun even if continuity wise and story wise it left something to be desired. Silver Age Aquaman was pretty goofy and was more of a crisis or villain of the week kind of format but it ranged from the occasional colorful villain to just a generic problem the fish were upset about. It's a feel good but simple kind of vibe. It wouldn't be until Steve Skeates had his run (collected in two Deluxe hardcovers "The Search for Mera" and "The Deadly Waters") that continuity and story really started to matter a lot more and Aquaman matured as a character, eventually after "The Death of a Prince" becoming doomed to be the kind of stoic and serious hero that lasted for the next several decades. I think those three stories are a really good introduction to classic Aquaman that would make you maybe want to read more stories. The Silver Age stuff is fun and I love it and re-read them but I'm not kidding myself when I say that the target audience for those adventures were younger children. Anyway best of luck! If you want some "hidden gem" Aquaman stories or great single Issue stories let me know!
that Wonder Woman series is really good. He honored the characters that had come before, and increased the scope of her story and the stakes. By having Perez draw it, you get a lot more detail on the buildings and the characters than you would get with any penciller today.
The Swamp Thing Omnibus is my pick out of the volumes you showed Michael - it's a superb collection of exceptional material including the much-neglected Martin Pasko/Tom Yeates issues that kicked off the second series. You're right about Aquaman, he has been around for a long time yet not much has ever been done with him; even the murder of his son by Black Manta, an incident which should have reverberated around the superhero community, seems to have been pushed into the background.
That Swamp Thing book is great fun. I only caught a few of those books when they first came out, so it was a blast getting to read them all. Wrightson was amazing.
Currently reading Superman: Exile omnibus and really enjoying it. I agree with you on the John Byrne stuff though. I think they could have done a soft reboot with a new #1 and it could have worked out better for the character. They wanted Superman to be the last son of krypton so badly that they swept his continuity out the door, but then made him unattached and uninterested in his birth planet. I mean, kandor was pretty much out of the picture, and Supergirl had just died. He pretty much was alone anyway. I do think that bringing back ma and pa was a good move, but I was even reading one issue where Superman was thinking to himself that his Kryptonian parents only gave him life, but that ma and pa gave him love. I love ma and pa, but what do you think Jor-El and Lara were doing when they put baby Kal on a ship to save him from Krypton? That’s love! Why make those silly distinctions anyway? Who knows. Excited for the upcoming movie though!
Early, early 70s I stumbled across a couple of very-used Green Lantern comics (like issue #6 and the like!) with torn covers ect. That omnibus volume would be worth it; the comics were fun! Likewise an omnibus of the Golden Age Flash.
I was actually surprised that buy sales listings on Amazon, the DC Finest collection has done very well, but particularly Superman, Batman, The Legion, The Flash, and Wonder Woman in that order. The Legion of Superheroes outsold Wonder Woman and The Flash. I thought that was strange.
I honestly think that DC (Marvel too, although it would be less beneficial) should reprint at least SOME books as general anthologies, with large samples of characters in them. Like a real SHOWCASE series but with reprints. Get you a big batch of whatnot for ten bucks. Sounds good.
Big DC fan and enjoy your coverage. I have recently gotten into the Silver Age stuff, and I'm completely jealous of your omnibus collection. I have a modest collection myself, but it's predominantly post Crisis. I would love to see your take on Jack Kirby's Fourth World stuff.
Cor.. that's a stack of chunky DC books. I got a kick out of the inclusion of some Showcase books, for some dopey reason they make me smile when I see people enjoying them, have a few myself, I like black and white comics.. and no, the All-Star Comics JSA stories have never been reprinted since the DC Archives. My comic reading plan for 2025 is pulpy, vintage, and littered with golden age heroes. Started today with one of my favourites, The Rocketeer, great comic inspired by pulp adventure cinema serials I loved watching.
When I was a kid I was more of a DC fan than a Marvel one. I was just be contrary to the majority of kids in my school. I was actually treated as a weirdo for prefer it. I think Marvel sold better but I think DC may have had the better writing at the time. (Marvel was better in the 60s though.) I've been reading old Flash comics on the DC app and they are a lot of fun. Wonder Woman despite being a character that has been around forever doesn't seem to have a lot of notable runs. The Perez one seems to be an exception. The Showcase Presents are good hunting down if you like obscure characers. (There's no real reason to get major characters in those formats when you can get DC's Finest and Omnibuses.) For lesser known characters they are great. I first read Bob Haney's Metamorpho in those. I turned it in to the used bookstore only because a DC's Finest volume is coming out. I found that comic to be a hidden gem of the Silver Age. It was to a certain degree a parody of the Lee/Kirby Marvel. Haney would take shots at the big M in his comics. (He was actually an admirer of Marvel and one of the first to see it would be major competition to DC.)
Hello, Michael Here is a poem that wrote me today. I landed in a field of flowers and twirled around. Life are you here? Yes, Dawn, I am here. Happy New Year
Crisis made it possible for DC to get new readers. Some of the characters who were killed were really in the doldrums before the event, especially The Flash,. The Wally West version was a lot more lively and the post Final Crisis relaunch of Barry Allen Flash was better.
The heroes were pretty much limited to the primary colors, but the villains got the secondary colors. It is their version of white and black hats in cowboy movies.
My reading order for this year is (which I began in late December): 1. Punisher (Garth Ennis & Steve Dillon) - 12 issue run (finished it today) 2. Catwoman (Vol.3) - up to issue #32 so far 3. New X-Men (Vol.1) 4. Wonder Woman (Vol.2) - I stopped at George Perez's last issue 5. Hellblazer (Vol.1) - I stopped at issue #125 or so
Errrrr can we address the elephant in the room please? Where's Sgt Rock? 🐘🐘 Is it true the great outsourcer (Aquaman) volume has a helpdesk number? 🤭 The problem with Aquaman is he has a terrible work ethic. Gets the seafood to do everything, he's a dead beat. 🤣
Still no Green Arrow? Shoot, if a Green Arrow or an X-Men video appeared on a Wednesday I might just be forced to make my own video to join in on the discussion...

If only… DC had printed the Showcase volumes in color instead of black and white. Even for a few dollars more.
Then you wouldn’t have the black and white version
:s
"for a few dollars more" would be a great title for a movie
Black and white is why I love them so much. My Essentials and Showcases will be the last reprint volumes to leave my possession.

Of all the series, Showcase Batman should have continued. At least until 1983 when the new Robin appears.

You say goodbye and I say hello..
I would to like see DC print the 2nd volume of some of their Compendiums but I’m not optimistic. I’m enjoying the DC Finest line though.

Don't badmouth Aquaman. He's cool. He was partial inspiration for my going into the sub service in the Navy.
Aquaman taught me how to get a piece of dirt out of my eye and I still thank him for it today. A true hero.
I wonder if DC realise that other colours besides red, yellow & blue exist.
The heroes were pretty much limited to the primary colors, but the villains got the secondary colors. It is their version of white and black hats in cowboy movies.

Hello Michael!
If you don't mind me asking Michael, how have you been able to afford all those comics throughout your life?
Steady work and no children.
Post Byrne - pre-triangle? DC inside baseball talk.
