Thanks Chris, I’m facing my 5 th 100 miler after a long period out with sciatica probably as a result of my last race, so need to develop a lot of mental resilience. I totally agree with how your brain tries to protect . I dnf’d in pouring rain with blisters a couple of years ago on NDW . Should have solved the problem effectively and taped my feet but gave in to it and decided 25 more miles in pain was stopping me. Arrgh
thinking that today on my 15 mile training run. Had periods of feeling really fed up and wanting to stop. Concentrated on my metronome and my feet hitting the floor and then it goes, comes back and so on.
I seriously needed this. I've been trying to bounce back from an injury which is proving to be difficult with a 14 month old running around. Its been a little difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel, or to find the motivation to keep pushing myself. But the overall vibe of this video really helped. Thanks for that
Go easy on yourself, life is tough when you've got little ones. Taking care of those little humans is the priority, and your training gradually comes back, promise ☺️
@@ChrisBranch it most definitely is the priority. But sometimes that voice, that resistance, starts saying things like 'you're loosing everything' or 'you're not training enough' and it can be difficult to find the strength to fight it. Thank you for the encouraging words, they're a real help
This video couldnt have come as at a better time for me. Training for my first ultra trail race and I'm going to attempt my longest run with biggest accents ever at the weekend. 12 miles round Lochnagar in the Caringorms. Thank you.
Chris, it was fantastic to watch this video. I ran at Gosfield and it was a pleasure to meet such a kind soul… this is a powerful video not about the BYU format but the lessons learnt and I loved the ‘library’ reference that you are building to tackle these lessons. Amazing achievement 🎉
Hey Rebecca, it was great to meet you too! I really enjoyed chatting on the way round, and thanks so much for helping me out between rounds. You're a kind soul too ☺️🙏
Beautiful narrative talking about the more elusive but maybe more important parts of ultras, even just pushing beyond your own limits. These are things that are not spoken about as much as practical stuff and don't have specific solutions to them so hearing about other people's mind strategies is very helpful. Thanks!
Thanks so much. It's hard to make videos about what goes on in our heads, but you're right, this is a super important aspect of ultras. I'm glad it helped ☺️🙏
Thanks Chris, loved the format of this. I’m attempting my first 100km run tomorrow inspired by people like you. Great to hear that runners of all abilities battle the same demons. Please keep up the great content
Great video again Chris, and great timing for me as Ive got a back yard coming up soon. Would love to know more about how you dealt with the race, your logistics, your race set up etc.
Thanks so much, I appreciate that. With the backyard, I was fairly minimal. No crew, small tent, ice box of food and a couple of spare t-shirts in a bag. A crew definitely would have helped, particularly as I started to slow down and had less and less time to sort myself out. But otherwise, it's very simple: get back and go again!
AWESOME Chris!!! It truly is a phenomenal achievement to keep going like that until you literally were physically incapable of making the time... great running!!! When I'm hurting I sometimes like to remind myself just what a huge privilege it actually is, just to be able to run just to even have legs!! I wrote to you on a previous video how I too had gotten a bit too cocky / overly confident / yes arrogant for my last 50k back at the end of June!! My next is tomorrow, though this time a gorgeous trail race in the stunning Fontainbleau Forest south of Paris !! I shall remember your wise words as I remember to enjoy the privilege of my surroundings too!!
Been watching you for a while (and had the pleasure of meeting you at UTS) and have to say this is one of my favourite videos you've made. I've been dealing with the "I'm not Goggins" and not quite there with the "...and that's ok" but it's been on my mind for a while. At UTS I wonder if I left it all out there or not. I was with 2 guys I met during the race, one who went on and was one of the last 3 to finish and the other made the decision to DNF before I did. I still wonder if he hadn't been there would I have not DNF'ed and gone on to be one of the last four to finish? You've definitely inspired me to take on a backyard ultra with the same mindset and see what my true limit actually is! - Jaden
Thanks so much for your kind words. I think we learn through experience. I felt fine the day after my DNF at Snowdonia, so I knew I should have pushed on. But the only place we can remedy it is in our next effort. No point mulling over the past; we just get up and try again ☺️🙏
Incredible video! "My inner voice told me I was OK, and in that moment, I was OK. " I love that. I need to get better at shutting off the inner gloomy critic sooner... I'll accept a DNF when I know I've done my best. The times I've regretted my DNF, was when i let that critic get too much air time.
I completely agree. I'm not saying we should _never_ quit - we're not Olympic athletes here, so if we're risking genuine injury it's not worth it, but in both my DNFs, I know I could have done better. The voices won. I'm trying to improve though, and bit by bit I think it's working ☺️🙏
Absolutely. In the end, I'm pleased I try things that push me. The uncertainty is what makes it a challenge. It still sucks to have quit when I should have gone on though 🤦♂️😂
How many did you do, Chris ? I did a backyard ultra in June for a different ultra run experience, i well and truly gave into the voices after lap 13 (just under 88km), i had plenty left in the tank to keep going for a few more laps, but the mind wanted me to stop. Yes, it's all about building a solid mind set, the body is pretty amazing on its own... 😃👌
Thanks, John, I appreciate that. And no, I've hovered over the 'buy' button a few times, but I can never quite justify it. Will it _really_ be better than the general leg work I do? 🤔 I doubt it. Maybe if I did more training at home I would get one, but I've been doing more heavy work in the gym recently, and that seems to be working well for me. I hope your training/racing has been going well too ☺️🙏
@@ChrisBranch fair enough mate they’re expensive. I pulled the trigger on one, impulsively, to help rehab a recurring knee issue. A moment of weakness (literally). Training has momentarily stalled while I sort this recurrence out and then it’s the build up for next years season 🙂🤘🏻
No problem with DNF as long as you have a reason for it that you are comfortable with or it is out of your control. Ideally you take something from it.
The format is great fun, I definitely recommend giving it a go. This one was the Gosfield Backyard Ultra, but they have them all over the place now. I did 14 official yards (59 miles), but covered 100k, I just didn't make it back in time to have an official 15 yards. I didn't put it in this video because it wasn't the relevant bit, but I may do a breakdown of the Backyard format in another video because they're becoming quite popular now and I had a good experience with it ☺️
The short answer is 'yes', but the slightly longer answer is that eventually you will benefit from one speed session a week. Starting off with easy running to begin with is a good way to improve your aerobic base, but the speed session is the thing that makes your aerobic base pace faster.
Tried something a little different on this video. No idea if it worked or not, but I had an idea in my head and wanted to try 😊🙏

This is about running, and it's totally *not* about running. ❤️
Haha, we could say the same about ultras themselves. Thanks for your comment 😊🙏
Perfect timing - I’ve got a 20 mile trail run in 2 days, my longest yet, and I needed your words more than I thought I did ❤
Amazing! Best of luck with it ☺️🙏
Loved this! I just started training for my first ultra, and I will be coming back to this video from time to time.
I'm so pleased it helped. Best of luck with your training! It's a wonderful thing to get into 😊🙏
Got my first ever Ultra in a month, thanks for all the advice
Amazing! I wish you the very best with it 😊🙏

How did it go ?

I did 14 official laps and attempted 15 but got timed out. I had 100k on the watch which I was happy with, but 59 miles officially ☺️
Great video mate good to see the channel growing. Btw (slightly off topic) did you get a monkeyfeet/monkeyfoot? How're you getting on with it?

Hey Chris what type of headtorch do you recommend for night runs?
I go through it in a bit more detail in my last video if you're interested 👍
I'm inspired... BUT ...can I achieve Ultra Distance with just lots of Zone 2 training runs?

Goggins also doesn’t have any cartilage left in his knees. The guy is bone on bone. Maybe the governor had a point.
Hahahaha that made me lol. Maybe you're right 🤔😂
There is only one David Goggins.
Haha you're so right ☺️
