    Some of these issues are dead battery symptoms as well. Slow charge, quick drain, phone reboots while battery is connected, and also no change in percentage while charging. Great video none the less!

    • @ibjessa
      @ibjessa 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, like it says in the video--repairs shops first rule out the easily solved bad battery and bad charge port before considering U2 failure.

      @mobbn973 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jessa Jones yes maybe you misinterpret my purposes of highlighting battery issues as the video's target is based on the u2 charging ic chip. I own and operate a repair shop. And from this level of experience 1 out of 50 iphone 5s's that come in with charge issues are the u2 ic chip at best. Most repair shops always overlook the common issues. I have been in this very new industry for 5 years and have worked with countless repair shops in countless areas. My statement was actually positive feedback and actually adding some specific information to an already great video. One of the reasons i chose Information Technology is because it is always advancing and we are always learning. Each one teach one attitude. But thanx for ur re re iteration of what kindly pointed out in the first place.

    Awesome Video Jessa! I love how you take the time to take apart the phone while explaining every step in detail and why certain things are done. This is perhaps the most crucial to learning. Understanding each step and having a reason for each move such as proper heat, adjust heat and air flow, then removing with flux and using braid and so on. Beautiful setup and video! Keep it up!

    Will knocking off caps/etc near battery terminal mess up U2?
    For example: A cap gets unknowing knocked off and battery is connected, or plugged in and thus U2 could be damaged? Because after replacing caps with new ones from DigiKey and continue to show symptoms is a recurring question I've always had. Thank you

    Slow charge.
    Fast drain.
    Uncertified charger and usb lightning cables have been used.
    Is the Tristar likely damaged and causing this slow charge fast drain?!

    Just watched this and repaired my first u2 tristar. Excellent video! Quick question, you said if you did the repair now you wouldn't bother with braid, do you just sit the new one on top and let the hot air melt old solder back in place? Seriously thanks again, this vid helped a lot!

    Hey there... You mention a "common no-boot problem" being the power management chip. My iPhone 5 wont turn on, I tried replacing with a known good battery, same thing. Would you recommend trying to replace the 338S1131 or is there any way to confirm the problem? Help greatly appreciated!

    • @JessaJones
      @JessaJones  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      PMIC failure is much more rare than any other no boot cause. Look for shorts or missing data lines first

    • @saschashah5701
      @saschashah5701 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your reply! I just opened it, looked around, didn't find any shorts but without doing anything it fully booted once. So i thought its good. Put it back together, it boots till the Apple logo, then shuts off. Could that be U2 as well? Same with a known good battery...

    Hi Jessa, great Video! Unfortunately, I have neither the equipment nor the skill for serious board-level repairs, but I have a more general question: If I use a genuine Apple charger, but with a cheap replacement USB cord (instead of the original one, which broke a while ago), can that also cause damage to the U2 ic?
    [FYI: My phone is currently dead (black screen, no boot, no response to hard reset) and, upon connecting it to my laptop, it gets stuck in a loop: connect-to-itunes >> attempt update/recovery >> error 4005/4014/4015 (varies).]

    Great videos Jessa. I'm curious -- I have an iPhone 5 ; it will not detect iTunes , or charge... I replaced the battery and it started up. Still wouldn't charge. So, removed the battery and attempted to power up with just the charger -- no dice. Could this be the u2 IC ? ... Why don't most techs offer iPhone 5 u2 IC services?

    • @JessaJones
      @JessaJones  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes. and because it is a giant pain in the ass on the iPhone 5. Not worth the trouble.

    • @capth00k
      @capth00k 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for your reply. I found a service (on ebay) for $30, plus shipping and they will replace the u2 IC on my iPhone 5 (only seller that would do so) ...just out of curiosity why is it more of a PITA to do one on a 5, in comparison to say a 5c, or 5s ?

    • @JessaJones
      @JessaJones  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      U2 is next to the CPU on the iPhone 5, so there is a good chance of killing the CPU. So then you have to explain to the customer that while they started with no charging, they have a dead CPU. Too much risk for $30!

    • @capth00k
      @capth00k 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ohhhh, I see that makes perfect sense. It is pretty close to the processor, so heat damage becomes a concern when you remove and reinstall that u2 IC. Well, I fixed mine yesterday fairly quickly -- to all those thinking it may be their u2 IC ; you should try replacing your charging port first because the part is cheap and it's fairly easy to do. That's what ended up fixing the problem for me ; and I was still getting voltage at some of the test points. No charging / no USB sync. Now all is well in iPhone land.

    only one question i have, i mostly charge my phone with a car charger, whose output is rated at 2amps, its an expensive one i bought it for maybe 200 AED. at home i use the original charger, should i change my car charger too ? as you said this problem occurs mostly by using knockoff chargers/ non original chargers.

    HI Jessa, Really enjoying your vids. I'm trying to repair my daughters 5s, it's stuck on Apple logo screen. Tried everything to restore but nothing works so took it apart first thing I'm checking is the battery voltage which come out at 4.26 v would over voltage cause a no boot problem? Cheers

    Hi Jessa, Loving your work!! Massive well done on helping out the masses :)
    Quick question, I had an issue with a 5c With fake charging, have have replaced the charge port, Battery and the U2 chip (thanks to the vid) but it's still fake charging.
    Could there be another issue at fault like a capacitor or something?
    Thanks again

    my iphone 6 reboots after 3 mins constantly whether is plugged in or not. It does charge,connect to itunes, restores and updates, when reboots it says 1 percent then when you hit the home button its says the right battery percentage does this sound like a symptom of a bad u2 ic?

    Teacher, what is the hot air temperature that ur using to remove chip ? this one for exemple, thx

    • @JessaJones
      @JessaJones  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hot enough, not too hot. Learn your station. Numbers don't matter

    • @JessaJones
      @JessaJones  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Somewhere between 300-450c depending on the job. This always differs. iPad Rehab highly recommends the Quick 861DW bit.ly/2xGDTXo for a cheap, affordable, powerful hot air station with an easy interface. It will remove all different types of chips without a problem, unlike weaker stations that can't stay hot enough long enough to do the job.

    Hi Jessa, I hope you can help me. I have a IPhone 5s and I have been having problems with the battery for a few months. Problems first started when it would only charge to 57% and then stop even thou the charging lighting symbol was still showing. Then it would drain very quickly even thou its plugged in. Now it wont charge at all, all I get is a black screen with the battery icon showing red and it wont charge. Any ideas?? Great videos by the way, keep up the good work. If I got the U2 chip changed, how long do they usually last?

    • @JessaJones
      @JessaJones  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably U2 chip related but as always thinking measuring and figuring it out is required.

      I notice swelling batteries cause the U2 to fail also (sometimes)? Or the non-Apple chargers and U2 causeing the battery to swell? I notice they swell two different ways. Usually like a balloon and U2 will be good. But if hard like a rock and bumpy usually bad U2. Or am trippin'

    Hi, thanks for interesting video. I've got an iPhone 5s with no boot problem (no usb detection as well). Once connected to good battery and pressing power button the phone generates some voltages (1v, 3v, ~200mA) however the display does not come on. The display and charging port have been tested with other phone. Is it the power management chip which is partially damaged, any ideas? Thanks

    • @JessaJones
      @JessaJones  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lukas Orange 200mA sounds pretty normal. Is it detected by iTunes?

    • @lukasorange7856
      @lukasorange7856 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +iPad Rehab Thanks for replay. it is not detected by iTunes (the Lightning connector and display has been successfully tested with other phone). The voltage on the lcd backlight is not rising and stays at battery level. The phone is not charging the battery as well so I have to charge it in other phone or supply iPhone from power supply.

    • @JessaJones
      @JessaJones  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      This could be many things, with 200mA it sounds like you have a separate display problem and usb detection problem. I assume you are prompting it to boot by shorting the power connector or using a power flex. I wouldn't think a phone could consume 200mA and be a dead phone.

    • @lukasorange7856
      @lukasorange7856 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +iPad Rehab I am starting it up by pressing power button. If the display does not come on and the usb is not detected it might lead to broken power management chip. I will try to measure some more voltages. I assume that if the USB interface chip is faulty it will not prevent device to boot?

    • @JessaJones
      @JessaJones  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      unless the U2 chip itself is shorted, in which case you would likely see more than 200mA consumed. 200mA is normal function of PMIC and CPU.

    Hi, I have currently just started a new mobile phone repair business and most of my work is more plug and play rather than board level. I have done some surface mount work in the past and used an airflow rework station to remove QFN's, SOTP's but never have I done BGA's. the techniques looks similar to those I have used in the past but because I am looking to repair customers phones it feels risky (of course I woukd practice first) however my question is, woukd an infrared set up be safer and easier to use for U2 and WIFI chips? or is a hot air station still considered the best way? any help would be greatly appreciated.
